Before we go on a trip, I consult TripAdvisor to check out fellow traveler's reviews. When I see one negative review in a bunch of generally positive reviews, I'll go for the positive majority. I figure the one negative as "sour grapes". Let's face it: The bed and breakfast experience is not for the Hyatt or Marriott minded set. I followed reviews about Casa Thorn for about two months before I booked an overnight stay here. A recent, rather negative review did not deter me, and I'm glad it didn't. We happened to check into the same room as the other reviewer, so it's sort of an apples and apples comparison. My wife and I checked into the Moroccan Room on a Saturday afternoon. I had called Kathy earlier in the day, and she said just to come on down anytime, as the room was not occupied that day. That's one thing that I enjoy about B & B's-flexibility by the folks who run good ones. Casa Thorn is on a residential side street just off the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), but well insulated from any highway noise by distance and lush vegetation. We were greeted by Kathy and Brian, the Innkeepers, and by Ms. Thorn and her new little puppy. The house is warm, clean and inviting, and the grounds are a riot of sub tropical plants-palms, monstera, orchids, cactus, hibiscus, bougainvillea, gumbo limbo and heliconias provide for a rich palette of greens and other colors. Parking and room access is easy, and the area is safe and secure...single women should feel at ease at Casa Thorn. Our room opened onto the pool patio area, but I did not feel any lack of privacy due to the proximity. The king size canopy bed is the centerpiece of the room, and is very comfortable. Everything in the room was clean-sheets were fresh, with no laundry odor, and the pillows were nice and plush. The bathroom is a large, mirrored room with a big hot tub, shower, TV, bidet and toilet. It's modern, well lit and very clean. Numerous towels, washclothes and body wash were supplied. Our only complaints about the room: 1) The wall unit A/C is a little loud on the high setting, and 2) It does take awhile for the hot water to get to the shower. We did not use the hot tub, but it may be that the water heater needs upgrading or repair. However-neither of these conditions detracted from our stay at Casa Thorn. The pool and garden area, along with the outside seating areas, are very pleasant. The chemical balance in the pool was perfect. No burning eyes from going underwater. Ms. Thorn and Kathy are attentive and friendly, and Kathy knows the area well for tips on restaurants and activities. She gave us a free day pass to Founder's Park, just down the road, which is a nice park with a good bayside beach-it will save you the 8.00 admission. Brian goes about the place keeping it up, and serves up beverages and breakfast with efficiency. There is a rooftop deck at Casa Thorn for sunning or stargazing, as suggested by Kathy. This deck is the only outside area that perhaps needs some attention. The crank on the umbrella handle was broken, and some new outdoor seating is in order. Kathy showed us several of the other rooms before guests arrived, and all of them well clean and well appointed. You'll most likely enjoy your stay at Casa Thorn. It's peaceful, quiet and clean, and close to plenty of the middle keys attractions. Staff is at your service, and there is something for all budgets. I heartily recommend this place for a good Florida Keys visit.
