I've been reading the reviews here, and I don't think they do Robbie's justice. If it were just a place to feed tarpon, I'd have never gone there. This is a marina that offers a variety of boating experiences from guided kayak tours to fishing boat rentals. I had read about their sunset eco-tours, but I wanted to try them out first, so we took a tour to Lignumvitae Island to check out their operations. We had a really nice experience, and enjoyed the afternoon, so we called to book a sunset eco-tour. It wasn't the high season for this, and it seems to be a service that is outsourced, so we talked to the captain of a boat who was clearly putting together his six person tours on a very short term basis.

The tour we booked was the highlight of our vacation. The electric boat was captained by a man raised in the area who knew how to balance storytelling with letting the participants experience the beautiful surroundings, and his environmentalism and knowledge of the area made for an amazing tour which included a visit with a manatee family (we had almost given up on seeing any manatees when we encountered them).

If we had stayed in the area longer we would have surely booked more tours. Everyone there was friendly and helpful and mellow. If you are just passing through, skip the tarpon feeding and just have lunch on the outdoor deck of the diner and watch the tourists feed the fat lazy fish when the bait makes it past the aggressive pelicans - then you'll get all of the entertainment without the danger of getting nipped by a bird.

One of the cheapest and no-hassle activities while driving through the keys - we had a blast at Robbie's feeding the tarpons (and inadvertently the birds). We saw a variety of large birds (giant birds, practically dinosaurs!), and the tarpons were gigantic and very plentiful! You can buy a bucket of fish from the shop and you go out and try to feed the tarpons. Sometimes they'll jump out and catch the fish. It worked best when you made eye-contact with the fish - i kid you not!

The tarpons are wild, they aren't in an enclosure. There is a place that is cornered off so that the birds won't steal the fish when you throw them in.. You can use the net to shoe the birds away, and then you can get the tarpons to jump out for the fish.

We stopped by while driving down to Key west, we were planning on spending only like ten minutes there, but ended up staying an hour. It was fun just sitting in the shade and having a smoothie and watching the other people feed the tarpons. I wish we had more time in the keys, their charter tours looked like a lot of fun. Will definitely give one a try if we ever go back!

We took a lot of pictures and highly recommend a stop at robbies. It's not something you do for a day or a half a day. It's more like 15 minutes to a half an hour but well worth the stop and something you should do if you are in the keys. The tarpon are HUGE and fun to feed and the pelicans keep it interesting. We had quite a few laughs with the others there. I don't think there was a person under 25 there. It's fun for ALL ages.. we are in our fourties and fifties and the 10 plus people there ranged from 25-70(my best guess). We all had a good time.

“very friendly”

Robbie's

Dec 19, 2007

Five of us wen there on 12/19/2007. The place stands for its reputation. Every one from the front desk clerk to the captain and his mates were friendly with smile.

My dad and me went for the half day fishing trip on Captain Michael. There were about 22 of us on the boat. The crew was Captain Brain (B. J.) and his mates Jason and Brennan. They ran back and forth to help us getting fish. One lady hooked a hammer head about 2 feet long. Of course, the shark was returned to water. A guy got a 4 lb grouper and a bunch of other fishes. If would be better if we got some catch. But we enjoyed the ride and beautiful weather.

My mom, wife and daughter went to visit the their famous tarpons. There were two dozens or more of those big fishes. My daughter was a little scared by the hungry pelicans. But it was spectacular to be so close to the wild fishes.

Overall, we liked this place for the service and the attractions. The price was reasonable.
