Just returned from a trip to Florida and stayed at the La Jolla for a few nights. I felt there were about as many positives as negatives at this place so that is why I am giving it a more average review. First, the place does have the whole Keys charm that is mentioned in other reviews (the buildings are painted the pinks, aquas, turquoises) that one associates with the Keys. I was travelling with others and so I had the ability to view other rooms. The room I was in needed updating. The air conditioner was loud and never got really cool enough during the evening. The shower in our bathroom was plexiglas enclosed with metal with small mosaics on the inside floor of the shower. All this was covered with calcium, lime, rust, etc. always giving me the feeling that the shower was never really "clean". Others travelling with us had bathrooms that seemed much more updated and were in much better shape. I also noticed that shams were used instead of pillowcases and I, too wondered if they were washed at least between different travelers as someone else had suggested. There was a gap between our door and the large window which let in small bugs (was afraid that mosquitoes would get in) until we ended up jamming the curtains into the area. There was a faint smell every once in awhile outside our unit walking to the beach. Having said this, loved the idea of the casualness of the place. Loved the fact that we had the refrigerator and microwave, toaster, etc in our room since we were travelling with kids. Would take a glass of wine down and watch sunsets that were absolutely breathtaking. The pool was small but did the job of cooling you off. While we were there a manatee would come to visit and would allow the kids to swim in the water with him. I also liked the family oriented atmosphere of the place. There was much to like about this place; however, until much needed renovations are done they should drop the price some.
