“Wonderful stay in Islamorada!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014 via mobile

Booking over email was easy and efficient. Check-in was very quick. We got an oceanfront unit that was just perfect. Kids were able to play in the huge open space. While the sand is not real beach sand, it is great area for just kicking the ball or relaxing on one of the deck chairs looking out into the ocean. The pier is beautiful. At the time we were there, there was a sailing competition and it was wonderful to see all the boats with their colourful sails by the pier. We didn't use the water sports rentals but their rates seemed very reasonable. Both pools were great and our kids enjoyed their use despite the suboptimal temperatures brought about by an usual cold front in the Keys that week. The breakfast was good considering that it was free, although we were the last set of patrons to have been able to take advantage of that from what I heard - they are supposed to be offering a new, full 'pay for' breakfast going forward. Only complaint is that the rooms seem to be cleaned every other day..which I have not seen anywhere else. We were there for only 4 days and were out for most of the daytime, so didn't get the chance to check with reception staff on that. The unit has a good size kitchen with microwave, fridge, cutlery etc. Bathroom has a full standing shower and a separate bathtub - great for kids! All in all, a wonderful stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, especially for families with kids.

Stayed there recently. My wife and I had been there several years ago, and the place was "quaint" and kinda "Keys Laid Back", so you got a nice vibe of the old Keys with your stay. And the place was OK, but kinda showed it's age, with some wear and tear showing thru.

Wow, the place has really changed, for the better. Rooms are clean, neat, fresh. The property is kept spotless; lots of maintenance going on all the time. Nice. The food is really, really good. Chef Andy is a top notch chef. Bar was very good. The beach was very nice. The front desk people were very nice. Ellen really was wonderful and friendly; Knowledgeable about the place and the area. I felt very safe and secure here. We had a great time. Thanks !!

They just raised the rates, I knew the minute they added the name Guy Harvey the rates would go up, they think just because they paint some murals and change the bedspreads they can go ahead and charge $250 plus tax for an ocean view room, yeah ocean view the ocean is about 200 yards away. I love this place but its definitely not worth $250 a night, they use to charge $189. they messed up big..

Room Tip: Get the rooms by the pool

Hello Mred1165 - Thank you for your post. We have raised rates a bit this year. It was a rather small cost-of-living increase. I noticed you stayed in May last year which is still high season for us and at that time we were not yet part of Guy Harvey Outpost. Our Ocean View rooms are definitely more expensive. However, we also offer Courtyard and Beachside rooms which are a bit more economical. Thanks again for taking time to give us your thoughts. We hope you will be back to see all the new improvements. Warm Regards, Karen

WE had never been to Islamorada before but had heard it was beautiful. The Islander Resort made it even more so! The room had a kitchenette and dining table, a very comfortable bed, and a huge screened in porch overlooking a park-like garden area. I actually preferred that to a pool or ocean view where music was piped in all day- where we were you couldn't hear it at all- just the palms swaying in the breeze. The porch had a large table and chairs and we spent a lot of time in the mornings sitting out enjoying the view with our coffee. There are grills all over and hammocks spread throughout the property. This is the first resort I have stayed at that had both a fresh water pool and a salt water pool, and the location on the beach couldn't have been nicer. The room was huge and the entire resort had a relaxing sense of peace about it. every staff member we met was super friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the little shops and all the close-by restaurants and also took a day trip to Marathon and another to Pigeon Key. The Islander definitely lived up to my expectation and exceeded them. I would absolutely come back!
Marcia

Room Tip: Try a garden view if you want to really relax and just sleep in a hammock.

Hello MarcoIslandLake -
Thank you so much for your post. The Courtyard rooms are my favorite too. You are correct. I love sitting on my porch with my coffee and enjoying the quiet. Glad you got to spend some time in the hammocks and hope to see you again soon.
Best Regards, Karen

Although other hotels in the Florida Keys are "pet friendly", the Islander really lives up to the name. Our dog was welcome almost everywhere on the resort property, including the beach, bar and restaurant. The only exception is one of the pool areas. Rooms are large, have full kitchens, and very nice screened patios with table and chairs. We had a few minor problems with the rooms when we checked in, but all were quickly resolved. The small, open air restaurant has very good food. Favorites are the conch casino, lobster tacos, and lobster mac & cheese. The service was great, especially Patrick, who was our waiter all three nights we ate dinner at the restaurant.

Stayed here for 3 nights this past week and loved it. The staff is phenomenal -- super friendly and welcoming. I had a problem with the hair dryer in our room and it was fixed immediately without any hassles. We stayed in an oceanfront king room and our screened lanai had a fantastic view. Only downside is it's a view of the sunrise and not the sunset. The property was very clean and quiet. Continental breakfast was convenient and good. We enjoyed drinks at the tiki bar, too. Highly recommend this property.

My family and I stayed here for a few days during a south Florida road trip. The grounds are beautiful, with plenty of room to spread out and relax. My children loved daily trips to the pier to watch the fisherman and the two pools were perfect after kayaking on both the bay and ocean side (we rented from Joe on-site who was extremely helpful suggesting we divide our kayak rentals between both locations). The lanai was ideal for card games and the hammocks were abundant for reading and napping. After many nights at high-rise hotels, the architecture, layout, and general vibe of the resort was a welcome change of pace. We ate breakfast and lunch on-site ---- and while breakfast was included, it's very basic (cold cereal, toast, carb-heavy), so like us, you may want to venture off property for something else (and there are several nearby good choices). The fish we enjoyed for lunch was very good --- fresh and cooked well. It's true about the beds --- they are very uncomfortable --- so they just made me look forward to a poolside nap even more. I hope the renovations I have read about start soon --- we hope to return to the Islander again next Christmas and knowing that the needed updates have happened will make for an even better in-room experience. The friendly service, beautiful grounds, and on-site water sport rentals make up for any room deficiencies, so don't let this scare you away.
