“truly an island paradise...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2011

We checked in yesterday and are quite pleased. After 24 hours here, my biggest complaint is that my stay will obviously be too short. It is clean and well-kept (not luxurious), but truly lovely. It seems to be the best of the old keys (quiet, laid back, with natural beauty), but without the crowds, the tackiness, or the sterility of a large luxury hotel. All units are ground floor. Ours has 2 doors; one opens up to the lot for our car (6 feet away) and the other looks out on the courtyard. There are 2 pools, a spa, and a LOT of beach (which is kind of unusual for the keys). The beach is just gorgeous; it could be mistaken for St. Thomas or another island paradise. Our room is spacious with a king bed, a table and 4 chairs, a galley kitchen with enough dishes and silverware to be suitable for a week's stay, and a nice bathroom. The weather is humid, but the room is comfortable. There is also a screened in porch with table and chairs.
We WILL come back again!

Room Tip: a pool view room would be nicer than a courtyard view

Great location....You can tell this is a family-owned business by the care shown in all the details. This property is wonderfully maintained, clean and the staff is very helpful.
This is a family friendly resort with TWO pools, a great beach and lots of water activities.
And you can watch a sunrise from your lanai or the beach and then walk across the street and enjoy a sunset at a nearby restaurant.

Hotel was great. Lots of fun activities and the villas. Dont be fooled by the pictures, the pool isnt that big but it is nice to jump into on a hot floridian day. Hotel staff didnt have the room ready on time but they made up for their delay in good service.

We stayed at the Islander for 2 nights over an August weekend. We arrived about noon and it was pouring rain. The front desk said our room would be ready at 3pm.. and if it was earlier, they'd call us. It was VERY stormy, so we went next door to the Cheeca Lodge to have drinks.

At 3:15pm, we returned to the Islander (POURING RAIN) and dodged the line at the front desk to pick up our keys. We drove to our oceanfront little villa on the other side of the resort and hauled our luggage in the pouring rain up to the front door. Once inside, we realized the room was not cleaned.

We dragged our luggage back out of there (still pouring rain) and drove back around to the front desk. I met the Asst. Manager and told her we were upset.. we were given a time to return; given keys and the room was still a mess. She apologized profusely and said she'd "get right on it". We sat and waited in the lobby. She explained that because of the storm, they lost phone and walkie-talkie communications and some trees were down and the maids couldn't get in and out of the villas easily with their carts during the horrific storm.

After about 20 minutes, and the manager and head chef coming to check on us (the chef actually said he was helping cleaning rooms and he was inspecting our room!) and told us that we could enter very soon. They offered us a $159 rate for both nights (instead of the $180+ rate) because of the inconvenience. We were VERY pleased with that.

Once we entered our room.. which is more like a villa..............we were very pleased. A clean/ modern place with a screened in porch overlooking the ocean, and a small kitchenette. VERY nice!

We were in room 512.. on the north side of the resort. This is the quiet side and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. There were a LOT of kids and party-ers near the pool and near the center of the resort.

The tiki bar is fun. The pools are GREAT. The beach and chairs are great. We took the snorkel/ sail trip right from the beach and LOVED it. It was the highlight of our trip!

We ate at the Green Turtle (just south of the resort) and the food was probably the best we've had. GREAT place. HIGHLY recommend.
Also Lorelei's across the street for drinks/ casual food and sunset.

All in all.. the Islander is a great place and we'll return!

Room Tip: Room was nice. Clean.

If you are looking for a Marriott type of place, keep going. If you are interested in a local hotel, your buck stops here. We stayed at the Islander back in October 2010 for one night and loved it. We then returned in august of 2011 for a week and brought family who also loved it. It is a low key, unpretentious, non-stuffy resort, as far as resorts go in the u.s. You get a true "island" feel here and if you are an rv'er, it feels like a campground. It offers two generous sized pools, hot tub, open air bar, beach, pier, kitchenettes villas, free continental breakfast and watersports. We took advantage of the waterspouts and were quite surprised with the customer service that Dave had provided. The weather had taken a turn for the worse and we did not utilize the entire time that we had tented the boat or and he offered for us to go the next day so that we got what we paid for -which is something we did not expect.

Even though the Islander is smaller in comparison to Cheeca, we would much rather go to the Islander. It is a good value, especially during these economic times. The only things that I would suggest is to add a few "sun sails"throughout the resort grounds along with some additional patio furniture and some more tropical flora. Other than that, I can not wait to come back...I miss it already and we just returned.

We loved this place. It was our first time in Islamorada and we had a great time. The hotel has the 1950's kitsch - think "The Jetsons". Very retro in a good way. The rooms are huge. They are actually more like condos, with a fully equipped kitchette (including dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave). Each unit has a big screened in porch for dinner or a card game in the evening. The beds were very comfortable, with HUGE closets. Very clean.

The grounds themselves included two pools, hot tub, sand volleyball court, lighted fishing pier, easy steps down to the ocean, exercise room... Really nice. Well laid out.

The free continental breakfast isn't going to win awards for originality, but heck! It was free (coffee, OJ, danishes, donuts, bagels, instant oatmeal, yogurt, milk and fresh fruit) The real surprise was the Tiki Bar. Great drinks, but an even better restaurant menu. Save money and take advantage of the kitchens for lunches and dinner. They have barbeque grills. (and hammocks :-)

The location and water is stunning. So clear and blue. I'd suggest water-shoes though. Not madatory, but the coral can be sharp. Very calm waters. Very shallow. We were waist deep and 20 yards out....so great for parents with kids.

We went as a couple, but I've already suggested that we gather together grandparents, brothers and sisters with their kids and do it up right. Great spot for a family reunion - beach, pools, sports, fishing, hammocks, and a grown-up bar for the adults. Something for everyone!

Had stayed here about 35 years ago and it was good then and still just as good with the exception of the pool areas which was great surprise it was stunning. The only thing that I could find fault with was the breakfast but we didn't go there to eat breakfast. The staff goes out of their way to be helpful. Just a great time.
