I just returned from 5 days in Key West with my girlfriends from work. Four of us stayed at the Duval Inn and we were very happy with the beautiful grounds, fun happy hour, breakfast and perfect location for all that Key West has to offer! All of us have been to Key West before and were looking for something not too pricey and within walking/biking distance to the bars and restaurants on Duval and Fort Zach beach... and the Duval Inn was a perfect fit for us. Cory and Kat were very hospitable and friendly, and I can't say enough about the fun we had every night at happy hour! Our bartenders kept us laughing and our drinks full, and it's such a nice touch to have a little bar in the middle of the beautiful gardens of the Inn. The pool was warm, clean and well kept and the property itself is immaculately kept.
We stayed in the Ocean and Marlin Rooms which can be combined and opened into one larger room. There was a large queen bed in each and the Ocean had it's own bathroom which we all used. There is a community bathroom for guests that stay in the Marlin, but we didn't use that for showers. The Marlin is a smaller room, and there's really not a lot of space for clothes, suitcases or much room to hang around it so pack lightly! It didn't bother me, since we spent very little time in our rooms. The Ocean Room is a considerably bigger and has its own bathroom. The bathroom could use a bit of updating (older paint, some noticeable wear and tear of the shower and sink fixtures) but I'm sure that's probably a work in progress. The beds are very comfortable with top of the line bedding (comparable to a Sheraton Dream bed). If you like a firm mattress, you might not be happy with the mattresses here. They are very soft and luxurious. The shared bathroom for the Marlin Room is beautiful. Brand new tiles, shower and fixtures. I wasn't comfortable showering in a shared bathroom, so I just used the bathroom in our shared suite.
The breakfast was very good, but for those of you who are true B&B fans, understand that this is a healthy CONTINENTAL breakfast! Coffee, juice, cereal, bagels, muffins, pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, etc. There are no omlettes, etc. It was perfect for us and all of the food was fresh and very good, but may not be to the taste of travellers who are expecting a true B&B experience. It was wonderful to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful gardens and fountains while having some coffee and a snack in the morning with my friends.
There were a few very minor issues that I think could be addressed to make the Duval Inn even better than it already is: I feel that new beach towels are definitely in order. The towels are seriously warn out, frayed and need to be replaced. I realize that maybe the management feels that guests should pack their own, but when trying to avoid checking bags, beach towels are a luxury that are normally left behind. The second issue was that the air conditioner in the Marlin room seemed to not work as well as it should, due to its small size and the fact that the unit blows air out the top right into the overhang from the window. I think that either a larger unit or a unit that blows the air out the front would help to cool the room off a little better. It was fine for us since we kept the door open to the Ocean room to help circulate the air, but on the few times that we had the connecting door closed, the room did get pretty warm even with the overhead fan blowing.
I have read reveiws where authors complained about the noise from the street traffic and the roosters, and we heard none of either. However, my advice to travellers to Key West who wish to stay close to Duval, or on Duval is this: You will hear noise! Key West is an all night town, so if you don't want to hear street noise, music, etc. stay a few blocks in or stay at one of the bigger resorts where you can get a room on a higher floor. The roosters have been a part of the Key West community since they were brought there in the 1800's. They are there to stay, and they do start crowing well before dawn (around 3 a.m. or so), so if you're a light sleeper bring headphones and you'll sleep like a baby! There's nothing that any innkeeper can do about street noise or roosters, and it always makes me laugh when I read about it here.
The Duval Inn is very accomodating both on arrival and departure days. We were permitted to leave our luggage there all day yesterday. Checkout is 11:00 a.m and our flight wasn't until 6:00. Kat happily stowed our luggage for the entire day while we spent our final hours at Fort Zach and Irish Kevin's. It was very nice to know that all of our belongings were secure for the majority of the day.
I am already making plans to return to the Duval Inn with my husband for our anniversary in September and for a family vacation in November. I can't wait to come back! Thank you, Cory, Kat and the rest of your family for such a fun and wonderful experience at your beautiful property!
