We came here at the recommendation of a guy who's a motorcycle enthusiast. (I can't imagine what it would be like to drive a motorcycle to Key West).
Once again, we got lost trying to find this place after touring Ernest Hemingway's home. That's ok because we got to see more of the Key West neighborhoods with their interesting botanicals and, of course, the even more interesting residents.
(Heh, heh. You could write a review of the residents alone, but they probably wouldn't like being part of the "attractions" page on tripadvisor.)
The place reminds me of a classic American greasy diner, even though they are serving Cuban food, and from what we saw locals do come here to eat and congregate. They wear t-shirts, baseball caps, and shorts so you don't have to worry about dressing up.
I drank 2 sangrias. My husband saw that the sangrias are made from boxed red wine. It didin't matter. They were awesome especially considering how cheap they were compared to the cruise ship's alcohol prices. I recommend that you go ahead and get a pitcher of it!
The food is very filling. It's about $9 a plate. We were very hungry after all the walking around town. I ate all the bread, fried plaintains, black bean soup, and most of the yellow rice. I was pretty much stuffed at that point. I'm not sure if the bread is Cuban. It looked more like French bread with butter. I've only eaten at one other Cuban restaurant, and their bread had a distinct yellow color. Anyway, I wasn't too impressed by the bread or yellow rice, but when you're hungry, you'll eat it all. I got the fried shrimp, which was interesting. It was like a hush puppy with a shrimp in it. I don't normally eat greasy food or even seafood for that matter, but if you like stuff like that you'll like this place.
My husband got some type of pork plate. He thought it was incredible. The pork had just the right amount of smokey flavor according to him. He could not finish it. It was impossible. You have to be a big guy to eat all that food. We were too full for dessert or coffee.
I recommend coming to this place to get away from the hordes of cruise ship passengers and to see more of the local color of Key West. If you like diners (like the ones you find in small college towns), you will like this place. I strongly recommend the sangrias!
