My last experience at Louie's Backyard will be my last ever. My wife and I were staying in Key West at the Gardens Hotel for our 25th anniversary. On our last night there, March 30, 2008, we asked the hotel concierge to arrange for a dinner reservation at Louis's, outside at sunset. She called and they could only offer 6:30 or 8:30. We took the 8:30 and arrived at 7:30, checked in and sat outside at the Afterdeck bar to have drinks and enjoy the sunset until our table was ready. Service at the bar was unremarkable, as the bartender seemed only concerned with the few locals who were hanging out there. Around 8:15, the young lady who was seating guests came to the bar to offer a table a little earlier, but it wasn't outside. We declined and said we'd wait. At 8:25, she came back and said that the manager told her to tell us that that was all they could offer because they had overbooked, but it wasn't a bad table. We agreed to take a look at it and found it just inside, right next to the doorway, looking at a post. We said "no thanks, call us a cab". On the way out, the GM (who appeared disgusted that the young lady was unsuccessful) told us that the reservations service that took our reservation shouldn't have taken it. I replied that the hotel called the restaurant while I was standing there and we agreed to take the 8:30 time. She then responded that "reservations are not guaranteed". Fortunately, the cab was waiting and not another word needed to be exchanged. The cabbie seemed familiar with their propensity for poor service and offered to call a couple of restaurants to see if we could get seated. He took us to Cafe Sole, which had a table waiting for us and we both loved the service and the food (see my review). The last time I ate at Louie's, about 3 years ago, I wasn't that impressed with the food and I think that if it weren't for Louie's Backyard being mentioned in a classic Jimmy Buffet song 20 years ago, I believe they would struggle, given their location at the far south end of Duval street and their complete and total disdain for their customers.
