“Very pretty although...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2007

Curry House is a really pretty Bed & Breakfast. The atmosphere is cosy and the hosts are very nice. The pool is quiet and you get towels for it. There is plenty of advice available on local amenties such as restaurants, beaches, etc.
The room and the bathroom were clean and all the amenities were in working order, although the air conditioning wasn't satisfactory (see comment below).

What we didn't like.
We were in room #3 which even though it costed us a whopping $184 per night shared the toilet with room #4; anyway you could say we knew this in advance which is fair enough. What we weren't prepared for though was the noise. The ait conditioning unit is VERY noisy and not very efficient in cooling down the room. We finally decided to turn it off all together but we were still being kept awake by the air conditioning of the adjoining rooms.

A note and an envelope was left in our room demanding a 5% tip. I haven't seen this very often in a hotel/b&b and I find it quite distasteful.

Breakfast is served between 8.30 and 9.30 only.

Finally, corridors have these "heavy" carpets which in a hot and tropical resort are not really practical. I personally would do away with them and replace them with a laminate.

The air conditioners in these rooms may have been noisy at the time of this review. All of our current air conditioners are new and quiet, and it is a priority of our new management staff to keep things in good working order.
The Curry House staff works hard to make sure our guests have everything they need and feel at home when they stay with us. Guests get to know our employees and often ask about tipping. It is not our policy to demand tips, but we do allow our cleaning staff to leave envelopes in the rooms.
Because we are not a restaurant, we have a set time for the hot breakfast. Coffee is available early and kept late for those guests who would like to sleep late.
As for the "heavy" carpeting, it is a very low-pile carpet that we installed in the hallways to keep noise to a minimum. We hoped this would be appreciated by guests looking for a quiet sleeping room.

The location is good, in a quiet area but a short walk to Duval and the water.
Our room was on the main floor. Good size except for the bathroom which was small and could be up-graded. Shampoo was supplied. There was a mini-fridge and small tv.
Breakfast was fine and the pool was relaxing.
Parking can be a problem. We were lucky to find a spot on the next street and left the car there for the entire stay and walked everywhere.

We spent 5 days in Key West in January 2007, and stayed at the Curry House again! (We were there for the first time last year - doesn't that say enough!) This year, we stayed in Room 2, with a semi-private balcony overlooking the pool area. Our room was wonderful, with windows/doors on 3 sides, so with them open and the louvers closed, we had both lovely ventilation and privacy. Of course, there were AC units for each room as well.

The location is very near to Duval and the tourist sights, but far enough to be quiet and residential in feel. Walking or biking anywhere from here is no problem.

The staff is very helpful and friendly if you say hello, but will respect your privacy if you prefer. One of the staff helped us to get reservations at a restaurant where she also works, and took the callback confirmation for us, so we wouldn't have to wait by the phone until the restaurant opened for dinner hours.

The common areas are pleasant and cozy, especially (I think) the front porches (both first and second floor). Breakfast is hearty and warm, and reasonable requests were fulfilled (they had green peppers in the omelet one day, and neither my husband nor I care for them, so they omitted them from ours).

Needless to say, we will be returning here again and again.

We ended up booked at the Curry House at the last minute when the Casa Marina was overbooked for Meeting of the Minds in November 2006. Boy were we lucky. To begin with, the location is excellent. Right in the heart of Old Town, you're about three blocks off of Duval and less than a 10 minute walk to the Marina (Half Shell, Schooner Wharf, Turtle Kraals) and less than 15 minutes to Mallory Square. Free, on-street parking was always available within a block or so.

The room (we were in #9) was quaint and very well maintained and decorated. The semi-private balcony (shared with room 8) had a nice view overlooking the backyard and the pool. The only negative thing I could possibly say about the room was that there are quite a lot of steep stairs to the third floor - not a problem unless you are physically challenged as I was with a broken foot at the time. It took a lot of effort to climb up there.

The common areas were very nice. Comfy furniture in the living room for hanging out or just curling up and reading for a while. A very nice back porch where breakfast is served every morning and a happy hour with several complimentary wine selections every afternoon. The pool area is lush with tropical foliage, and being surrounded by a tall fence, offers quite a lot of privacy and seclusion from the rest of the neighborhood. You almost forget there are houses right next door.

Finally, the staff is super-friendly and super-nice. Terry was very helpful all week long, and the young ladies (whose names unfortunately escape me) who frequently worked in the morning preparing a very nice and hearty breakfast went out of their way to help out in any way possible.

Having been to Key West over a half dozen times, we have stayed everywhere from budget inns to chain hotels to high-priced resorts, but if at all possible, the Curry House will be my destination of choice for all of my future visits.

Nice location, and we enjoyed the shared balcony since we were traveling as a party of 4. However, we were surprised that a $200+ per night hotel did not offer any shampoo, lotion or any other toiletries except basic white soap. Additionally, we were slightly disappointed by the nonexistent "full" breakfast choices - the cook prepares one combination and there is no choice even though the ingredients are there and there are only 8 rooms. It's a nice idea to offer guests a happy hour at 4-5pm every day, but how about some peanuts, or crackers and cheese to go with the 3 carafes of wine they put out. The rooms are small, and have tvs so small and blocked by the bedposts that it would have been better to not have TVs and just gone with the getting away and relaxing theme. Overall it just seems like everything could have been better and slightly less chintzy, and given a better impression at very little cost to the owners. There are many better options in key west for around the same price including Simonton Court and Paradise Inn.

The Curry House includes a large hot breakfast each morning by the pool. However, like most bed and breakfast inns, we do not employ a short order cook. We change our breakfast menu every day so our guests can enjoy a different entree each day of their stay and take advantage of seasonal and local treats. We always have both a vegetarian and a cereal option, and are happy to work with our guests dietary restrictions with a little notice.
We supply our rooms with shampoo, conditioner, soaps and a hairdryer. On the occasion that we have forgotten any of these items, our guests need only mention it to us and we will get them what they need.

Absolutely exceptional in every way. Room 8 was large and very comfortable. The staff was great, Pepe makes a mean omlette! The entire property is immaculately clean, extra showers in the common area's were handy. Very close to Duval Street-we walked everywhere we went. We will definitely be back with friends!

  • Liked — The rooms catch an ocean breeze all the time

This was our second stay at the Curry House (11/19/06-11/24/06) and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We felt like we were at our own home when we arrived. We were able to reserve the room we had two years before. The staff is is courteous and helpful and so pleasant to talk with. They make you feel like you are the only ones there - they give every guest their undivided attention. No one is ever made to feel like they are imposing on them. Everyone looked forward to the delicious hot breakfasts served every morning. Wine is also served in the late afternoon near the pool.

I would never even think of looking for any other place to stay when visiting Key West. The beautiful home, the sensational staff and the wonderful view of the tropical backyard from our balcony - why look elsewhere?!?

What a great way to spend my 50th birthday - at the Best B&B in Key West!

Thank you Terry, Lesley, Susan, Pepe and Brenda!
