Marrero's Guest House has had wonderul reviews, so one would expect a wonderful experience, no? We don't have many complaints... it's a very nice bed and breakfast with a lot of great amenities, but you must follow the rules.
Our first morning there, I had gone out for a run and came upon Alisa, the housekeeper, hurridly getting breakfast together. I understand rushed... but the comment of "Have at it" as she left the breakfast area left a lot to be desired.
John is great - he's not a bubbly personality, but he fulfills every request. Just follow his rules.
I was honestly a little surprised at the allowance of poolside nudity, compared to the rest of the house rules. Sorry, I can't be comfortable / frontal male nudity and female nudity, as well. Guess my Bible Belt upbringing is showing too much. Of course, all this is awkward if your 23 year old daughter is with you.
One last comment. We checked in w/ a small cooler. WeE were advised to leave it outside on the balcony which we did. We were also told the ice machine didn't make enough ice to fill it. On out departure morning, we filled the tiny rooom ice bucket twice to get some ice for the cooler before leaving. Alsia commented to my daughter: "I know what you're doing ...you're filling that damn ice chest"
Well, yes, we were gettting a small amount of ice to put in, but should we have been the recipient of profanity?
The amenities were very good at Marrero's, but the over-riding rules were a bit of a let down.

“My First Trip In Key West”

Marrero's Guest Mansion

Jul 29, 2008

I was in Key West last weekend and stayed at Marrero's. I went with a friend that has stayed there over 30 times through out the years. It is a wonderful place and you cannot beat the location! Warm, charming and very inviting. John was a great host and we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend it to anyone and look forward to staying there again.

Denise from Chicago.

Wonderful time again in Key West for our 4th anniversary. This was our first time at Marrero's; the location and hospitality were excellent. We will be back - thanks again John & Alisa for making our stay very comfortable!

We stayed in Room 22 which was very comfortable with a small balcony. The rooms by the pool looked very inviting for a future stay.

We especially enjoyed the c/o pool and honor bar. Breakfast was fresh and delicious every morning!

We didn't see the ghost, however her presence was felt. Thanks again for letting us stay in your home. Hopefully we can meet next time and have a drink together!

“We wouldn't consider anywhere else”

Marrero's Guest Mansion

We stayed at Marrero's the second week of February 2008. John is very unobtrusive although if you ask where to eat or for the best attractions, he will gladly give you alot of information. I just wonder if the people who have bad things to say about him ever initiated a conversation with him or asked for information about town. We found him very informative and pleasant.

Alisa, ( hope we spelled it right) was also very informative and pleasant. We went there expecting her to be a monster from some of the posts here, but found just the opposite. She was very pleasant once we started talking to her. She was also very apologetic one day when a fair amount of the guests were checking out and she wasrunning behind on getting to our room for service.

Please remember that John and Alisa don't know what you may want to know, therefore they may seem stand offish, but if you ask, they are both very friendly and willing to answer your questions or give you suggestions.

Yes, the roosters start at 4 A.M. The roosters are all over town so there is nothing they can do about them. They are outside of the property, therefore there's not much they can do about them. This is a working town, just because you are on vacation doesn't mean the city stops. Marrero's is on a side street but you still get the traffic noise unless you have a room at the back of the house.

The location is also great, we walked everywhere we went. The breakfast erved us just fine and the happy hour was great. Sitting on the front porch during both of these events on a daily basis getting to meet the other guests was great.

The pool was awesome. It was warm for the most part (maybe getting in at midnight was the reason it was a little chilly). The fridge and stereo by the pool were great touches.

If we had to make a bad comment about anything, we would say that the matresses may need to be replaced, but we also realize that these matresses get treated to people of all shapes and sizes every day. Considering that, they really weren't that bad. The only other thing we can think of is that 1 night the Mrs. asked for an extra wash cloth and John asked that she not use it to take her make-up off. We thought that maybe he misjudged my red body wask for make-up but we're not sure.

Overall, this is a fantastic place to stay. For right now, we would not even consider looking for anyplace else to stay. We loved it so much that we were already planning our return trip on the plane ride back. We booked our room fo 2009 2 weeks after our return.

    • Disliked — nothing at all. Everything was great.
