I booked a trip in mid-May to Key West as a surprise for my wife. We didn't have $300 - $400 to spend for a night in a hotel, so despite the less than glowing reviews I read about the Pegasus, I booked a night there by phone for about $150. The girl said we could book another night once we arrived if we wanted too as they were not too busy that weekend.

The approach from the side street is kind of grubby, the lobby is small but efficient, and our room with king-sized bed was dated but OK for us to crash in and have a shower in the morning.

The roof-top pool and hot-tub near the back of the deck were refreshing, and the tables and chairs at the front that overlook Duval St. were great. We had a bird's eye view of the partying on the below and we were able to figure out which direction we wanted to start (being right across from Margaritaville didn't hurt). 10 blocks to Mallory Square in one direction, 10 blocks the other way to explore too.

Coming home at 4:00 and a quick swim before bed was great. (We were politely asked to leave the pool because if they let us swim at that time, they have to let everyone swim at that time, and I guess things can get pretty rowdy).

We stayed a second night.

“Great place”

We stayed here in April 2004 and it was absolutely great. It’s not the flashest hotel in the world but right in the centre of town. The staff were friendly, the décor was good (art deco style) and the roof sundeck and pool were fantastic. Car parking is a block away, but you can park outside the hotel to unload.

We arrived in Key West on Memorial Day weekend, with no accommodation booked. We're British - we didn't know, OK?! So while we'd dreamed of shuttered colonial guest houses with sumptious fruit pancake breakfasts, we ended up in the Pegasus at $160 a night. I'm glad I didn't read these reviews first, but we actually found it to be OK. Dreadful shower (you had to run around in it to get wet!), noisy air-con and shabby, dated rooms, but ours was clean and Duval is right outside your door. We were grateful for a bed, and the Pegasus did the job just fine. There's a pool that we never used, but it looked good enough, and the guy on the front deask was really helful in finding us free parking. So don't get your hopes up too high for the Pegasus, but don't despair either - it's not too bad and while you could do so much better with a bigger budget, not on a holiday weekend, you could also do an awful lot worse.

I was shocked to discover how expensive Key West hotels are. Even a dump charges $200 per room per night, so I had to adjust my expectations a bit when I stayed here!

The big positive with the Pegasus is location - it is literally a stone's throw from everything, and you can stumble home safely post-Duval Crawl in a matter of 2 minutes. Another big plus is the roof-top pool, hot tub, and terrace, which is a great place to chill and recharge before heading out on the town in the evening.

Negatives? Probably the rooms. Key West is a place to party, so apart from sleeping and washing, you will not spend any amount of time in your room. Having said that the rooms are fairly basic, the decor quite dated, and yes the towels will only just about cover your modesty, but hey, that's Key West for you. Even though I literally rolled into bed at 4am one night, I noticed that my bed had seen a lot of action, and was minus a few functioning springs. As for the hygeine, well it looked pretty clean to me but I had my beer goggles on so my verdict is not to be trusted!! Our room had a fridge which we were glad of at the end of a hot and humid day out and about.

Overall not the worst place in Key West, and at least you get to keep your dollars for tipping the "ladies" at Bourbon 801, and having a rum runner or dozen.

“The Most Expensive Dump on Earth”

This Pegasus hotel is one of the worst establishments I have ever stayed on vacation. The service was beyond horrible and the quality of my room was disgusting. I found pubic hairs, yellow stains and spiders in my bed. There was no water pressure in the shower, the toilet ran all night and the towels barely covered my body. Customer service not only yelled at me for demanding a new room they charged me double. Needless to say, DON'T STAY at the PEGASUS motel.... you will be sorry.
