My husband and I stayed at Alexander Palms for a week as we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Key West. We searched reviews on every hotel, b and b, and "Vacation rental by owner" before choosing our hotel. We were very happy with our decision. We had a one-bedroom suite that had a king bed, its own covered front porch, and a small but 'full' kitchen (large fridge with freezer, 4 burner electric stove and oven, some cookware, dishes, and silverware). The shower was good, with a rain shower head and great water pressure and no lack of hot water. We found the room to be very clean, and it had everything we needed. Cleaning service was great all week, and when we left a note to say that a bulb had burned out in the kitchen, it was replaced by the time we returned that afternoon.
The grounds were very relaxing and well kept. We made good use of the pool and the gas grill. There are pool towels there for use - use them and then drop them into the laundry bucket when you are done. The lights around the palm trees were very charming at night!
When we checked in, Johnna was very welcoming and gave us all the info we needed to settle in and find our way around town. She also arranged for our bicycle rental for the week (Eaton St bikes delivers and picks up.) During the week she was available to answer questions and to ask for feedback about places we had visited.
The only negative thing about our stay was the noise from other rooms, which is not something that the Alexander Palms can control without investing in major soundproofing. Our room had a door in the kitchen that provided the opportunity for an adjoining room to the unit next door. A few evenings we had neighbors there who were not good at using their 'indoor voices.' The best we could do was to crank up the window A/C units to use them as white noise, but we also wondered if our conversations or TV watching sounded as loud to them.
If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort with luxury everything, this is not the place for you. Then again, neither is Key West overall! Key West is a city. It is a tropical and small city, but none the less a working city with construction, traffic, trucks and planes, and most of all - people, people (and roosters?) everywhere. Anywhere you stay in the Old Town area will have some degree of outside noise and things going on at all hours. Unless you stay in the big complexes down near the airport, you will not escape that reality.
A note about the value of Alexander Palms - we looked up the prices at some of the neighboring hotels/motels after arriving. No one could compete in price; not even close, with the same location and apparently similar age/appearance of properties. When you factor in what we saved by having breakfast provided each morning, it was a really good deal.
If we return to Key West, I would not hesitate to stay at the Alexander Palms again!
