My partner and I stayed at this hotel in early February 2005. We found it to be a wonderful place to stay for our first trip to Key West. While the hotel wasn't terribly busy during our 4-night stay, the other guests that were there were very friendly. We enjoyed the daily wine and beer around the pool chatting with the other guests. While our contact with the hotel's staff was fairly minimal, they did seem quite friendly and helpful. We chatted with the owner briefly and he seemed like a very likeable fellow.
We had a very nice room with a king bed that overlooked the swimming pool. It was nicely decorated, with a nice-sized bathroom with great shower and pedestal sink. The bed linens were wonderful. The room had a rather awkward layout, with the television very far away from the bed, but this wasn't a problem for us since we rarely, if ever, turn on a hotel TV.
We tend to paint the town in the evenings and sleep late in the mornings, so I can't really comment on the breakfast since we weren't usually up in time for it. It's a bit of a hike to the main drag from this hotel, but it's a lovely walk, and a really quick bike ride. (I highly recommend renting bikes or scooters in Key West and forgetting about the car). The weather was absolutely perfect the whole time we were there and the walking was great.
We really enjoyed that the pool and hot tub were open 24 hours a day. We did a lot of late-night swimming. Perhaps the only complaint was that they were doing some re-construction of the pool deck right outside our door that started around 9 am (early for us). It was a rather noisy. I don't fault the hotel for this though, as they have to do this type of work sometime, and given that the hotel wasn't too busy during that week, it was probably the perfect time to do the work.
I would highly recommend this hotel to same-sex couples who are looking for a friendly (but not cruisy) atmoshpere. The grounds are compact but beautiful, and I thought the room rates were really reasonable for such a nice hotel during February. We will hopefully be back to Key West next year and I would not hesitate to stay at the Fleur de Key again.
