“6th trip to KW”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Traveling this time on a limited budget and trusting my nephew who lives there and hears about everything, I read the reviews and reserved Ibis Bay for a weeks stay with my wife for our 1st wedding anniversary. The nice things I heard and read were true. The couple of poor reviews are BS. Rooms and grounds were clean and, pool, bar and restaurant very nice.
What I would add if I were management? Shuttle service to Duval St. Perhaps share with the Marriott across the street. Put more beach towels, a bottle opener and coffee maker in each room.

Room Tip: Definately get a room facing the bay. Your own beach and hammock are the way to go. Rent transportat...

Thank you for the compliments. And a bottle opener in each room is a good idea. We ordered them. They are on their way. We do offer free coffee at the restaurant and a 10% discount on all meals for guests. Thanks for a good idea!

The hotel is decorated in a really cute, fun fashion. The mattresses are horrible, neither of us slept well due to back pain. Toilet slow flushing, finally stopped up. Left ring in room, not turned in.

I am glad you liked the decoration style but concerned to hear your beds were not comfortable. We often get compliments on our comfortable beds. I will locate your room and have the beds changed.

We booked this on line. Looked at a picture of a room with a bedroom and seperate room where there was a pull out couch. Ended up with a "double" room which was very small. Also when I looked at the photos we wanted an ocean view room. The picuture never showed the high voltage power line towers which come across the back. You could also not swim in this area It was also not an ocean view, but a bay. When I voiced my concern the manager on duty was very rude and said it was not their problem and it was the on line service I used. I also voiced my concerns to owner and he was also very rude.
There was one manager who finally said they were sorry for the misunderstanding.
There was also no glasses or cups or coffee service in the room. Other than the poor customer service it was an o.k. place if you want only basics. It is an older motel and a bit run down. Also a ways from downtown. Not walking distance.

Room Tip: I would try a different hotel as there are too many things that that the on line photes do not show.

This guest argued repeatedly, loudly and rudely at check-in that he booked a "double room" and that meant a living room plus two bedrooms. In other words a double suite. I was called to try to solve the situation. Our pictures on our website don't misrepresent us. Here's how Wikipedia defines it; " A double hotel room sleeps up to four people in two double beds. Since there are two beds, it is called a double."
We gave the guest a free waterfront upgrade and he now complains we are on a bay, not on the ocean. Our name is Ibis Bay. Sometimes it's hard to be polite.

My husband and I stayed here while visiting Key West. The motel offers a hint of unique charm while trying very, very hard to be considered a "resort". It's "almost" there...

The laid-back attitude of the employees is something we noticed right away. Laid back can be mistaken for rude and unprofessional, they flirt with that fine line of what is acceptable. ****They do charge a $10.00 fee per day for a resort fee, which is a joke boys and girls.***** What is it for? Really?...

The room we were given was very spacious however the locks were very poor and looked as if they were recently kicked in or something.
THE SHOWER WAS THE MOST DISGUSTING SHOWER I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Not only was the caulk dirty as all heck, the water would collect at the bottom and overflow into the rest of the bathroom. When I brought this to the attention of the employees, I was told by Gina, in a very unprofessional way, that we should have told them sooner, and the level of the water in The Keys is to blame, not their lack of plumbing.... BULL, I call your bluff.
The maid service doesn't come around until... meh.... when they feel like it... which was well past 3:00 every day.

We were told from an actual employee of Ibis Bay that this motel was used in the past as a "by the hour" place (if you catch my drift), so I give them props for coming as far as they must have... but you really need to fix up the place to be considered a "resort", and to charge as much as you think you can.

Choose a hotel closer to down town. You might spend a little more a night, but you'll save yourself a headache.

Room Tip: I don't recommend staying here... but if you must, request a room with a door over-looking the w...

I know from long experience that both Gina and our housekeeping staff are always great at what they do. And they are genuine and friendly to our guests as they do it. If that is possible. Our rooms are spotless. That is a fact. We even use ultra-violet lights to ultra-clean room surfaces every day. Guests point out our high level of cleanliness on Tripadvisor all the time. But I do have to accept that Ibis Bay is a quaint 1956 time warp that clearly wasn't a good match for this guest.

Relied on Trip Advisor reviews as was first time in KW, was not disappointed. Used the free upgrade on TA for a waterfront room, well worth it. Room is on a little beach with lovely view of the water. Saw a large iguana, lots of birds too. Room small but clean and decorated in fun tropical decor. Bathroom fan was extremely loud, couldn't stay in there too long, couldn't shut it off while in there - also not enough shelf space to store personal items. Understand it is an older motel/hotel but surely a new fan could be installed. Otherwise, a nice stay, quiet location away from downtown. Had a car but rented scooters to check out downtown, too far to walk. Downtown very crowded, limited parking. Not a problem with scooters or bicycles. Construction near hotel not really an issue.

Room Tip: Waterfront rooms are the best

You did everything right. Getting a free upgrade by booking direct through our number on TripAdvisor or going to our website is a really great deal you can't get any other way. Having your room directly on the beach is wonderful. I also recommend bikes or scooters as the best way to get around the island. Apart from making parking easy, its great fun. Great job!

This is great place to stay in Key West. The restaurant is great and serves good food. Rooms are nice. We had a water view. Close to shops. Staff is friendly and helpful. Downtown is a short drive. We stayed for one night. They also have onsite tour booking for all the great things to do.

Thank you for taking your time to write a review. Having a great restaurant as part of Ibis Bay makes a big difference to our guests. The Stoned Crab was recently warded four stars. Plus hotel guests get 10% off their total bill.

We were here for five nights and really enjoyed our stay. If you're looking for the Marriott, though, or something within stumbling distance of Duval Street, this isn't the place for you. We wanted a unique and laid back place on the water to stay, and this fit the bill perfectly! I would definitely recommend the waterfront rooms with a view of the bay, the private beach, and daily visits from the quirky, and highly entertaining, Ibis birds. We loved sitting on the deck outside our room, just chilling out and enjoying the view and the great weather. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and we loved the funky, vintage Cuban-themed decor. The bathroom was a little small, but this is the way it was built in 1956! It was nice to have a fridge in the room (for supplies there is a Publix supermarket, liquor store, K-Mart and Walgreen's within walking distance), and I believe you can request a microwave as well. As hard as we tried, we couldn't avoid tracking sand in the room, but housekeeping did a great job of keeping things well stocked (loved the mango papaya toiletries!), clean, and in order (just a suggestion . . . don't forget to tip these gals. They work hard to help make your stay enjoyable.) The room didn't have a coffee maker, but there is free coffee (and a 10% discount for food) for guests in the Stoned Crab restaurant. We enjoyed dinner and drinks in the open-air Stoned Crab one night, but a 10 p.m. closing time seemed a little early for vacationers who want to relax and enjoy some drinks and conversation at the bar without having to venture out to Duval Street. Not a huge deal, though, and we would definitely stay here again if we ever came back to Key West!

Thank you. You really get what this place is about. We are deliberately different and people who like you who appreciate a time warp from the 1950s love it. Neither my partner or I want to make Ibis Bay fit any chain hotel mold. We have been offered a lot to sell Ibis Bay to a chain but we know they would demolish it as soon as the check cleared. How many hotels are made out of coral like this? None. Not for sale.
