The Angelina is by far the best value you will find in Key West. If you are high maintenance and demand a "resort" type of vacation, this is NOT the place for you. In that case, go ahead and book a resort room that will run you anywhere from $250.00 per night, AND UP! However, if you are in Key West to experience the true ambiance of the city, then I highly recommend the Angelina.
We have stayed at the Angelina several times, as have our family and friends, and none of us have EVER been disappointed! In fact, my sister and some of her friends are checking in today (04-25-08), my daughter and 2 of my nieces will be there next month, and my husband and I will be back there in July for a week.
First and foremost, the Angelina is kept immaculately clean at all times, as are the surrounding grounds. Even if you book one of the rooms that happens to "share" a bathroom, it is almost impossible to tell that anyone else has ever used the room besides yourself. The pool area is completely enclosed, with lush foilage, a hammock, pool chairs, and bistro tables for your enjoyment. They serve a continental-type breakfast every morning that consists of fresh fruit, boiled eggs, toast, bagels, cereal, pastries, and their "infamous" fresh-made cinnamon buns, which are out of this world!! The owners, Kevin & Janet, as well as their "girl Friday" Stephanie, are eager to make your stay with them as pleasant as possible and will even make recommendations and reservations for you if requested.
Besides the incredibly reasonable room rates, I like the fact that you can walk almost anywhere you want to go from the Angelina. If you are a beach person, I recommend walking over to Ft. Zachary Taylor State Park. You are also only 2 blocks from Duval Street (the heart of Key West), and a very short walk from Mallory Square, which is where they celebrate sunset every evening with all types of entertainment! In fact, we parked our car when we got there and never moved it again until it was time for us to leave!! Some reviewers have stated that they felt the Angelina was in a less than desirable neighborhood. As someone who has spent a great deal of time in Key West, I can tell you that that is not so. We have walked back to the Angelina in the early morning after doing the "Duval Crawl", and we have NEVER felt unsafe, nor has anyone ever bothered us.
The only thing I do not like about the Angelina is the fact that so many people have discovered this gem, which is making it more and more difficult to book a room on short notice!! If you are planning to stay at the Angelina, I would recommend that you book as far ahead as possible!
