If you want a Key West experience beyond the bright lights of Duvall Street, La Mer is for you! Our room was very comfortable, the staff are wonderful (especially Sam, La Mer's manager and general helpful advice resource!), and everything is truly within walking distance. For those more interested in really relaxing, use the Tranquility Pool across the street; no kids, no loud music -- just great places to hang out under big, shady umbrellas. This end of Duvall quiets down early, so no problems with loud noises that can keep you awake. Breakfast each morning was really good, too -- plenty to eat to get you fueled up for whatever adventures the day may have in store!

Just came back from a 5 night stay at the La Mer and it was wonderful. We had a garden view room with a balcony from which you could see the ocean. The room was beautifully laid out and very comfortable. Breakfast each morning on a beautiful covered patio by the water was delicious -- a continental breakfast buffet with quiche, yogurt, lots of fresh fruit, etc., and as the hotel manager, Sam, says, plenty of "vitamin W" for the perfect waffles she makes to order. She is also a font of knowledge about Key West and can lead you in whatever direction you are interested. The Tranquility pool was definitely our hang out (no children, no music, just a lovely pool and a burbling fountain. We truly enjoyed the stay at the "quiet end" of Duval and would definitely stay there again if Key West was our destination.

Room Tip: If you can afford the ocean front that's probably your best bet, but our view of the water with...

This is a true gem. Although the rooms vary in costs and size, each rooms gives you access to the delicious breakfast and the fabulous high tea. All Key West accommodations are pricy, so you might as well choose decadence, cleanliness with a home like feel to it. The Dewey House is next to the buoy marking the southernmost point, at walking distance from mainstreet with it shops, restaurants and galleries. The Dewey House gives you also access to the private beach and the various swimming pools. Bikes are available for rent and the concierge can set you up with all kinds of attractions and area maps. Key West can be best enjoyed with little a luxury, which you’ll find on your pillow in the shape of a Godiva chocolate!

We stayed at the Dewey House in an ocean view room. Part of The Southernmost Hotel properties, the Dewey House is on South Street, in a quieter section of Key West. Our room was very comfortable and clean. The towels are refreshed twice daily, and the hotel uses Aveda products in the rooms. La Mer and Dewey House are bed and breakfasts, so you can eat breakfast downstairs or go over to the nearby restaurant if you want a larger breakfast. They also offer cheese, fruit, sweets, tea, and sparkling wine each afternoon. The property has three pools and two beaches. The beach chairs are complementary, and for $10, you can rent an umbrella...which is worth it to protect yourself from the hot sun. The guys who run the beach equipment also bring you frozen towels, pineapple an offer good conversation if you want it. The drinks at the nearby bar are great as well as the fresh seafood...you can also get a burger if that is what you desire. Right down the street is a CVS, a health food store and a bank. You can walk right down nearby Duvall, Simonton, or Whitehead Streets and get anywhere on the island fairly quickly. Cabs are cheap too.
I will definitely stay here again on a return trip!!

Room Tip: Loved room 419 in the Dewey house. Ocean view, but second floor and quieter.

The Dewey House has completely changed my perception of Key West by delivering an extraordinary experience.

Prior to this past weekend, I always dreaded any visit to Key West because past experiences led me to expect a hot, sweaty, rocky, crowded tourist trap. But three days (and nights) at the Dewey House have changed all that. Who knew that there existed in Key West such an elegant, service-oriented, and historic accommodation and… on a beach. But, here it is!

Victorian on the outside but all comfort on the inside with friendly people eager to ensure a pleasurable stay.

Our room, a luxury garden view, was in the Dewey House and decorated in a more contemporary style (the rooms in La Mer were more traditional). It had many windows with plantation shutters and a large bathroom with even more windows, double sinks and even a soaking tub. A king size bed with soft, pillow-top mattress, comfy pillows, and great bedding. A good-sized fridge that easily accommodated a 7”round birthday cake. A large flat-screen tv… bathrobes, in-room safe… even a private balcony with fish-shaped Adirondack chairs.

Breakfast each morning included the usual “continental” items… but also, made-to-order waffles, home-made quiche and even beignets with either mango or raspberry filling. There is also champagne for mimosas and an espresso/cappuccino machine. All of this is served on an open air, covered patio facing the beach with balmy breezes. Afternoon tea is also served on this patio and, while not a traditional English Tea (i.e. no scones or clotted cream), it does offer the espresso/cappuccino in addition to teas as well as cheese, crackers, veggies, hummus, biscotti and a different “sweetie” each day (also champagne).

Being right on the “public” beach, it is just a few steps to having a beach chair set up. You have to get your own towels at the pool (not a problem as you pass it on the way to the beach). Chairs are free for hotel guests ($5 for non guests). Umbrellas are $10 but worth it for the shade.

There is also a private beach, but this is small and perched on top of a concrete wall… as is the tanning pier. There is a beautiful pool with beach chairs, umbrellas, live music and a bar… but perhaps a bit more crowded than the beach.

Turn-down service every night and very friendly staff completed the experience.

My sisters were at the La Mer and loved it as much as my husband and I loved the Dewey House. One sister had a “suite” (#409) which seemed a bit small to me but had a great wrap-around balcony on which we all gathered each evening for wine and cheese). It also provided a great view of weddings that were held on Friday night and Saturday night… I have to say, it looked like a GREAT place to have a wedding.

The Dewey House is also in a great location, not just because of the beach but also because it is easy to find and easy to sample the other offerings (restaurants) of Key West. If your feet aren’t up to the walk to the other end of Duval, there are always taxis (about $7).

The only difficulty we had was with the front desk of the Southernmost when it came to ordering taxis. The first time, we called the concierge far ahead for a taxi to arrive at a specific time. It never came. Because we needed to make a specific “sailing time”, we ended up taking a taxi off the street. The second time, we tried again to make a reservation in advance but the person at the desk (Linda) refused to call it until we were all gathered in the lobby “because we might take another taxi”; when I asked how long the taxi would take she said 15 minutes. So… we would be obliged to wait 15 minutes in the lobby as opposed to calling in advance? She finally agreed to call the taxi right away. But, when we all appeared in the lobby at the appointed time, she picked up the phone “to make sure the taxi was on its way”. Fifteen minutes later, still no taxi and we were in danger of missing yet another sailing time. We ended up “again” taking a street taxi (and still missed our sailing time for the restaurant L’attitudes, which totally messed up our plans for the evening). Our advice on taxis (which we learned from other guests) is to make your own arrangements by calling 305-296-6666. We never had a problem with them (palm tree on the door)… just the company the Hotel relied on (parrot on the door)… but again, this was NOT the La Mer/Dewey House. It was the Southernmost.

The bottom line is that we are so enamored of the Dewey House (and La Mer), that we have all agreed to gather here annually.

I'm not in the habit of awarding 5 stars because I always feel there is room for improvement but this hotel really hit every mark for me. It was truly a splurge but it was a milestone birthday and my husband and I thought I deserved a treat. From the moment you get there you are greeted by the inn keeper who then gives you a tour of the property and truly makes you feel like you are staying with friends (very rich, friendly friends!) They make sure your every request is attended too and that your satisfaction is met. There were so many excellent things I can't even name it all- location, service, food, drinks and comfort, pure understated luxury. Our room's wrap around porch was directly overlooking South Beach so I could look at and hear the relaxing waves of the ocean. The room was gorgeuos and well appointed- the furniture decor was very "stately plantation" and so comfortable. The amentities were decedant Aveda, one of my favorites, and they always made sure to restock every day something often neglected at even the most luxurious hotels. We had a great time at all the pool bars on the Southernmost properties. The staff was truly the friendliest and most genuinely happy bunch of people- I wish I could remember all of thier names, I'm sorry, but from the front desk to the bartenders, amazing- thank you for making an already great vacation extra special! Next time we will probably stay at the motel part of the property as its cheaper but still benefits from the great staff and service.

We just got back from another week staying at LaMer. Although the weather was not as cooperative as past visits, we had a great time (usually we have perfect weather but this time saw multiples days of rain which was unusual for the end of April / early May). Anyway, how can you not have a great time in Key West regardless of the weather?

Our accomodations were once again perfect as was the helpful staff in reception and at LaMer. A special thanks to Sam, Randall and Darlene for making our stay wonderful. I have nothing bad to say about staying at LaMer/Dewey House. We like the top floor as we have an open balcony and a great view of the beach/ocean. The room appointments are very nice making you feel pampered in this outstanding B&B. The location just off Duval provides perfect access to the main activities/restaurants in Key West which are all within easy walking distance.

We have already booked two more visits to Key West and we are once again stay at LaMer. You will not regret staying here!

Room Tip: We like the top floor as we want a sunny balcony and a great view of the beach/ocean.
