“Good location, good room, & great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2008

We just returned from a 10 day stay in Key West. We stayed at Budget Key West. It definately exceeded my expectations for the price we paid (about 99/night). Outside of the room is a sitting area with 2 chairs, a table, and an ashtray if you need it. This was a good area to store bikes if you rented them/brought them, let your towels dry, or just hang out. The room we stayed in was comfortable and clean. We had a queen sized bed, side table with lamp, 6 drawer dresser, wardrobe with hangars, TV with cable channels (most important for visitors: The Weather Channel, NOAA channel, and the Keys Channel), bathroom with large shower and never ending hot water (shower only-no bath), celiling fan, carpet in room, and kitchenette area. The kitchenette area was a big plus. There was a coffee maker, microwave, and larger sized mini-fridge, dishes and utencils. However bring your own can-opener, bottle opener, and wine opener. Every dining place is a little pricey. We saved money on breakfast and lunch, and used our money on nice dinners and activities. Some of the best dining is off Duval (like Mangia Mangia, Michaels, Cafe Sole). We brought breakfast cereal, oatmeal, yougurt etc since we could use the microwave and refridgerate items. They provide coffee, but you could always bring your own. For lunch we brought deli meats, sandwich stuff, breads, and chips etc. There is a little freezer part in the mini-fridge which was a good place for cold packs. So if you are going to the beach often, use coolers or lunch bags to bring food/snacks/drinks/plenty of water. There is an ice machine outside. Key West is open container...so bring some decent sized cups and stock up on your favorite beverages and fix your drinks before you go out. The hotel is in walking distance from pretty much anything. It was 4/5 blocks from Duval. We were able to walk to Mallory Square, to the boat for the Fury Adventure trip, the ferry boat for Dry Tortugas, Ft. Zach (a longer walk-probably more like 50 min to the water-great snorkeling right off the beach to see colorful fish), resturants and bars, shopping...Bring comfortable shoes. Parking is only on the street. Otherwise the parking garage about a block away can be costly. It's 14 bucks a day. There's no weekly rate, only monthly. So, we parked the car and pretty much left it there. We took the bus everywhere if we didn't want to walk. It's 8 bucks for a 7 day unlimited ride pass. You can find the bus route online or get a map from one of the buses. The locals on the bus were very friendly and helpful. Bicycles and scooters also seemed to be good ways to get around. The staff was helpful and friendly. They helped us book day trips, give recommendations, and print out the weather forcast for example. We had our laptop, but we could not access internet in our room. There are several internet cafes nearby. There is a rooftop area to lounge outside. There's no pool at Budget, but right across the street at Albury Court (which is Budget's sister property) there's a small pool area. Dante's Pool Bar is about a block away and has a fantastic pool with a waterfall; however, I think I paid like 10+ bucks for a frozen drink. They don't check to see who buys food/drinks though. Budget didn't have a breakfast, but Albury provides coffee/juice/muffins etc...and we got some breakfast over there one day because it was just laid out by the patio area near the pool. All in all, it was a great stay. When we return to Key West we will definately stay there again.

This property is clean, comfortable and has a decent location for adults not planning to drive much.

The front desk people aren't very personable and finding an on-street parking spot is more than challenging during peak times.

It's located close to the old Seaport (aka Key West Bight) and a reasonable stroll to Duval Street. The Bight has several good bars and restaurants, there's a full size super market and also a parking lot there. It makes sense to go through there on your way to Mallory Dock for the sunset Ceremony.

Finnegan's Wake, a really friendly irish Pub is just two blocks from the property.

Comfortable beds (we got the dual Queens), small fridge and wet bar rounds out the list.

If you stay here, definitely rent a bike! It's about a 15 minute walk just to get to Duval Street. Granted, that's not much, but in the heat and humidity of Key West, it feels like a lot. I'm not kidding: renting a bike on my second day improved my stay dramatically. Just riding around the back streets gave me a better feel for the spirit of the town (off Duval Street!), and the breeze felt great. I got to see some of the cute bungalows and funky breakfast places I wouldn't have wandered into otherwise. Plus, you can ride the bike down to Zachary Taylor State Park and spend an hour or two at their little beach to cool off. You COULD walk this, but it would be a long drag for all but the truly ambitious.

As for the room, it was just average. It was definitely budget, but that was expected since 'Budget" is in the name! The bed was saggy and uncomfortable, the bathroom was a little broken down (patched hole in the wall, towel rack that kept falling off), but the air conditioner worked, the t.v. worked, and for one person watching costs, it worked for me.

Be warned: parking is a major drag. Be prepared to pay. There are about 2 free spots on the street. Most of the street parking is by residential permit. If you are willing to drive around, it looked like, as a rule, one side of the street is residential permit and the other is up for grabs -- but there are a lot of people grabbing!

Upon check-in, our group of 6 (3 couples) were told that two of the couples had been upgraded to the nicer Inn (Albury Court) but they couldn't do that for us...no vacancy. So, our group was separated and we got to check into Room #28. Small, small room which was okay because we weren't planning on hanging out in the room anyway. Not much walking room or STORAGE for your belongings. The towel rack and toilet paper holder were hanging from the screws in the wall. There aren't any hooks for wet towels or suits in the bathroom either. The shower was roomy and probably the nicest thing about the entire room. The sink is a pedestal type sink which doesn't allow for much room for your grooming items. A shelf of some type would be God-send. Didn't care for the carpet around the bed...looked dirty and worn. Ceramic tile was nice, but didn't understand why it wasn't throughout. Photos that are shown of Budget Key West room on the Web must be the best room in the place, because our room didn't even come close to looking like that. The location of the Inn is good. Street has a lot of traffic, but you can easily walk to Duval Street or basically anywhere.... the beach is a haul, however. After three nights there....left and checked into Southernmost Hotel (spent an extra $36) and WOW, what a place. Huge, clean rooms and plenty of storage to put away your stuff. Nice pools, tiki bar and right across the beach. If you are looking for average and a place to sleep, Budget Key West is for you. We, however, will pay a little more to have what we consider the basics.

We absolutely fell in love with this place! I'm sure it helped that we had booked an economy suite, only to find at check-in, we had been upgraded!! The suite we were given was #5, right next door to the new reception area (across from old hotel). It had its own entrance, a porch with a nice little patio set on it, palm trees decorated the entire front yard portion.

The inside was great too... very clean, modern upgrades to the bathroom, flat screen television on the wall. The size was a little bit small, but considering it was only my husband and I, we certianly didn't mind. Besides, we weren't there to sit in our room! We had Duval street waiting for us! Oh- and might I add, if you're going to take the time to "do" Duval street... don't concern yourself with the short walk from the hotel to get there..... if u can't walk that far, I wouldn't recommend you try and walk Duval, its twice as long!

There has been many complaints about the noise while staying at this location. Yes, its a busy street, and a main intersection. There is definitely traffic going by... but its not distracting in the least. The hum of the air conditioner drowns it out instantly.

Parking is an issue all over Key West, not just in front of this hotel. We were lucky enough to nab a spot right in front of our suite... hopefully you will too! If not, there is a parking garage one block away..just ask the staff.

The hotel was nice for the price. Extremely small rooms. Nice location but expect to walk at least 6 blocks to Duval Street. Rooms have small kitchenette with mini fridge, sink, coffee pot, microwave and plates (nice feature). You can drop luggage off early or leave it there after check out. Receptionist can be a bit on edge when she gets busy. Ignore her and enjoy Key West.

Good hotel if your paying under 120 a night. Staff is very unpleasant. Good location and authentic feel.
