My boyfriend and I stayed at Southernmost on the Beach from Sept 3rd - Sept 7th. We truly enjoyed our stay! Our hotel room was great - We were on the 2nd floor of the middle section of the hotel, so our room overlooked the pool and beach. The beach was small - we didnt spend time on it because there was so much seaweed in the ocean & there was a strong seaweed smell on the beach - When we inquired about this, we were told that the ocean/beach had a significantly higher seaweed content than normal due to the recent hurricane - The pool was extremely clean (the hotel provides pool/beach towels for your use) - The pool was a bit warm for my taste, but definitely still refreshing, especially since the Key West sun is very hot! You also have access to the Southernmost Hotel's two pools (across the street) but we preferred our pool - But we did go across the street to have drinks at the tiki bar by the pool. We had a great view of the ocean/beach from our balcony. The room itself was spotless - They have just recently renovated the rooms, so everything was virtually brand new (they actually brought in brand new chairs during our stay) We had 2 showers in the bathroom, one a large shower stall and one a shower/tub combo - And there are 2 sinks and ample counter space in the bathroom as well. We watched weddings take place on the beach for the first 3 nights we were there! It is a beautiful setting for a wedding. Our room had a very comfortable king size bed, a refrigerator, microwave, sink, utensils, and plates/glasses in the kitchen area, but there is no stovetop, which was fine for us - We bought some cereal, milk, water, etc at the downtown Walgreens so we could have a quick breakfast or snack. But most days we went out for breakfast/brunch and dinner -
There are many many good restaurant options in Key West. In the room we found a brand new restaurant guide which helped us a lot - Our favorite breakfast/brunch place was The Deli Restaurant on Simonton St. (approx 5 minute walk from the hotel) - Very good food at very reasonable prices - The special hashbrowns are yummy! For dinner, we went to The Trattoria - very good Italian food (and this is coming from two people who are both 100% Italian) and they have a nice area in the back of the restaurant (a small indoor area with a bar and an outside patio with a bar) where they have live music at night. We also had dinner at Michael's - a bit expensive (not somewher we would go every night) but their special veal chop dish was worth the money! And they are known for their molten chocolate souffle-like dessert, but we just didnt have the room for it! Maybe next time! Michael's key lime martinis are awesome, too. We also had dinner one night at Mangoe's which was also very good - I loved the key lime pie at The Blond Giraffe, and we both love the huge chocolate chip cookies ($5 each but worth it) at Matthiessen's (they have 2 locations on Duval St) One day for lunch we went to Kelly's Caribbian Restaurant and Brewery - although we didnt get to try any of their microbrews, their blackened mahi mahi sandwich was awesome - we can't wait to go back there!
We took one 1/2 day snorkeling adventure (the Sebago Catamaran Snorkeling adventure - recommended to us by the gentleman at our hotel's visitor information center - very convenient as they book the trip for you!) We highly recommend this excursion as the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and helpful - It was great to experience the only living coral reef in North America - The service at the hotel was great - they couldnt do enough for us - On our last day, our flight was at 6pm - So we were able to leave our bags at the hotel and they scheduled a taxi for us - And they gave us a key to the changing/shower room by the pool - So we spent the day walking around key west, came back for a swim in the pool before showering/changing in time for our taxi to take us to the airport - The only negative was that there are tiny ants in the room - We found them near the sinks in the bathroom, on the counter by the kitchen, etc. So make sure any food you have in the room is kept either in the fridge or in a container/sealed bag - But this fact is not enough to keep us from returning to Southernmost on the Beach - - Everything is within walking distance from this hoteland since its on the southern end of Duval St. its very quiet and peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area.
