My boyfriend and I stayed at Southernmost on the Beach from Sept 3rd - Sept 7th. We truly enjoyed our stay! Our hotel room was great - We were on the 2nd floor of the middle section of the hotel, so our room overlooked the pool and beach. The beach was small - we didnt spend time on it because there was so much seaweed in the ocean & there was a strong seaweed smell on the beach - When we inquired about this, we were told that the ocean/beach had a significantly higher seaweed content than normal due to the recent hurricane - The pool was extremely clean (the hotel provides pool/beach towels for your use) - The pool was a bit warm for my taste, but definitely still refreshing, especially since the Key West sun is very hot! You also have access to the Southernmost Hotel's two pools (across the street) but we preferred our pool - But we did go across the street to have drinks at the tiki bar by the pool. We had a great view of the ocean/beach from our balcony. The room itself was spotless - They have just recently renovated the rooms, so everything was virtually brand new (they actually brought in brand new chairs during our stay) We had 2 showers in the bathroom, one a large shower stall and one a shower/tub combo - And there are 2 sinks and ample counter space in the bathroom as well. We watched weddings take place on the beach for the first 3 nights we were there! It is a beautiful setting for a wedding. Our room had a very comfortable king size bed, a refrigerator, microwave, sink, utensils, and plates/glasses in the kitchen area, but there is no stovetop, which was fine for us - We bought some cereal, milk, water, etc at the downtown Walgreens so we could have a quick breakfast or snack. But most days we went out for breakfast/brunch and dinner -

There are many many good restaurant options in Key West. In the room we found a brand new restaurant guide which helped us a lot - Our favorite breakfast/brunch place was The Deli Restaurant on Simonton St. (approx 5 minute walk from the hotel) - Very good food at very reasonable prices - The special hashbrowns are yummy! For dinner, we went to The Trattoria - very good Italian food (and this is coming from two people who are both 100% Italian) and they have a nice area in the back of the restaurant (a small indoor area with a bar and an outside patio with a bar) where they have live music at night. We also had dinner at Michael's - a bit expensive (not somewher we would go every night) but their special veal chop dish was worth the money! And they are known for their molten chocolate souffle-like dessert, but we just didnt have the room for it! Maybe next time! Michael's key lime martinis are awesome, too. We also had dinner one night at Mangoe's which was also very good - I loved the key lime pie at The Blond Giraffe, and we both love the huge chocolate chip cookies ($5 each but worth it) at Matthiessen's (they have 2 locations on Duval St) One day for lunch we went to Kelly's Caribbian Restaurant and Brewery - although we didnt get to try any of their microbrews, their blackened mahi mahi sandwich was awesome - we can't wait to go back there!

We took one 1/2 day snorkeling adventure (the Sebago Catamaran Snorkeling adventure - recommended to us by the gentleman at our hotel's visitor information center - very convenient as they book the trip for you!) We highly recommend this excursion as the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and helpful - It was great to experience the only living coral reef in North America - The service at the hotel was great - they couldnt do enough for us - On our last day, our flight was at 6pm - So we were able to leave our bags at the hotel and they scheduled a taxi for us - And they gave us a key to the changing/shower room by the pool - So we spent the day walking around key west, came back for a swim in the pool before showering/changing in time for our taxi to take us to the airport - The only negative was that there are tiny ants in the room - We found them near the sinks in the bathroom, on the counter by the kitchen, etc. So make sure any food you have in the room is kept either in the fridge or in a container/sealed bag - But this fact is not enough to keep us from returning to Southernmost on the Beach - - Everything is within walking distance from this hoteland since its on the southern end of Duval St. its very quiet and peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area.

We stayed at this hotel for almost a week, it was wonderful. The negative reviews are very misleading. From the initial reservations to the checkout process, the staff was great. We had a bottom floor with a partial Ocean view, which was fine. If you want full ocean view, you need to go elsewhere and pay for it, but Key West has so much to offer that that was not necessary.

It is close to Duval and we got plenty of excercise walking up and down it. It is a quieter end of the street which was great to come back to after being down in the hub ealier in the day. The beds are super fantastic. I have never been more comfortable in a hotel in my whole life. The rooms are quite nice, not overly large but that was not important to us. I would recommend and stay there again.

Best place to stay on Key West !! If you're looking for a resort where they have shops, dining, etc all within the hotel, then this is not the place....but then again....why the heck do everything in the same place, and not venture out for the local flair ?!?! And as for the negative reviews, some people need an education on ocean"View" and ocean"front". The hotel sits longways out into the ocean. Therefore, the 2 rooms at the end, 215 & 115 would be ocean"front". All others are "view". And if the hotel sits out in the water, how can you not have a "view". Now, off my soapbox. The place is fantastic. Right from day one in calling for reservations, they couldn't have been nicer. I asked about room 215, but it was booked, but the gentleman on the phone immediately told me about 115. It's the exact same as 215, but on the first floor, so you have a private patio instead of a balcony. Still could see the ocean! The staff was great. Luckily we flew in and didn't have to deal with the parking. I absolutely recommend renting a scooter for your stay. Parking is horrible, but for scooters, you can practically park anywhere. The hotel is at the opposite end of Duvall, so it is quieter and less hectic. But is walking distance (or short scooter ride to the party end). The pool was large and clean. There is a public beach next door, w/ a Tiki bar. Bottom line...if you want the hustle and bustle, and party of Key West, but would like to retire for a quiet night sleep and a lazy morning rise, this is the place to stay. Will not stay at any other hotel on our next trip back.

We stayed at Southernmost on the Beach from June 8-12 2005 & I was very skeptical after reading many bad reviews. The hotel is really a remodeled motel but much nicer than you are picturing. Yes, you face the beach, but the beach is not what you are coming to Key West for right? If you are, then go somewhere else! Our room was on the bottom floor because we did want to save money on our trip & we did comparison to our friends who chose to stay on the top floor. We both had the same view & everyone who did stay on the 1st floor agreed. Southermost has a large sundeck that extends out onto the ocean that is just a few steps away from your door. If you do plan on staying here then try & request a room closer to the ocean(after the pool) you will have a better view. Now about the clothing optional bar behind(next door)us. I was also very worried about this but we actually only encountered a few nude people while laying out on the sundeck only. It's not like they are walking around Key West or anything & the way the hotels & bars extend out onto the ocean you only have a small portion of the place in view only when you walk to the sundeck. My husband & I walked around Key West looking at compariable places to stay & we really enjoyed staying where we were. Plus all of our friends in the other 10 rooms we either at Southernmost on the beach or Southermost Hotel. Staff is very friendly & we did not have one need that was not met. You can charge your drinks from the Tiki bar at the pool across the street at the Southernmost Hotel which was nice & the Duval Beach club also has this feautre(located across from the hotel on the beach). Friends of ours said the food there was pretty good & they loved the breakfast. We did encounter a tropical storm Arlene while there but we did not let her spoil our time. Taxi services are a bit high so make sure you load up if you take a taxi. We did not rent a scooter because there were too many people there for my taste & I was afraid I would wreck(one of our friends did & it cost him over $500.00 so make sure you read the FINE PRINT on rentals). GEM cars are available but parking does not come easy on Duval. It really is not much just to walk. Yes, you will sweat but there is so much shopping & so many bars, restraunts to go to you can soak up the cold air anywhere. I would recommend going to Benihana's for a good meal. A lot of the places to eat are overpriced & not really good. My husband & I chose Benihana's after my parents recommended it to us when I called them to check on the kids & tell them about our trip. SO GLAD WE WENT THERE! It was worth every dime...even when the storm was at its worst & the restraunt had a power surge & there was no airconditioning. Ice cream across the street from the hotel is pricy & really it is not very good(they claim to be the best on the island & they actually did win some awards but hey I live a few hours from Blue Bell so I guess Im a bit pickier). Bottled water from the corner store was outrageous so I really would recommend going to a store as soon as you get on the island & stock up on water, beer, drinks, snacks, etc. & load them up in the fridge provided! More about the hotel?? Good place to stay for your money & yes, I would spend the little extra to stay on the beach instead of across the street. Our friends who stayed across the street were there just to party but my husband & I are really glad we stayed where we were. Fly in to Key West if you can! We flew in instead of the drive & the view was absolutely beautiful! Our friends who drove wished they would of flew. They said it was a nice drive but they were just ready to get to the hotel after flying all day. Overall, this motel was great, in a great location(1 block from the start of Duval St.) & very quiet for a FULL Hotel chain.

Stayed at Sothernmost on the Beach for a bachelorette party and we all really enjoyed it. The room was comfortable and the staff was really nice. The beach is also right next door. And if you're not a big beach person- then the pool in front of the hotel is a great alternative. I think the hotel was definitely worth the price and I would stay there again!!
