“Great As Always!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

This was our third time staying there. I won't stay anywhere else in KW ever again. Everything is great from the rooms, the pool, the quietness (even though it's right of Duval - although the quiet end of Duval), the staff, etc. LOVE THIS PLACE!!! We loved it so much that we even extended our stay by 2 nights while there :)

I have been to Key West at least 15 times and fell upon The Orchid Key. I couldn't of asked for a better experience with a hotel. Brandon who is the hotel manager was very helpful. Brandon made us reservations at hard to get into restaurants and even called and rented some bikes one morning. The room was updated and comfortable. The bar specials and staff for great also. Betty who is the main bartender became a friend to myself and my guest. I will not look at any other establishment to stay on each and every visit to the Conch Republic, thanks Brandon and Betty!

Room Tip: Any room at this place is great!

We found this hotel online and based on the great reviews we decided to make reservations. We were there the last week of March which is the start of the high season and we paid over $500 a night which was very pricy, but every hotel was either sold out or the same price.
The rooms were beautiful and clean, the staff was very friendly! They provided breakfast each morning which we enjoyed pool side and a free drink every night for happy hour. The location was perfect and close to everything. Overall I loved orchid key inn and would definitely go back!

Stayed at the Orchid Key March 19-21, 2013 with my husband and were delighted with the Orchid Key. This is an extremely clean and well appointed hotel with definite "attention to detail." Constant attendants around making sure the pool and flora were top notch. The free morning breakfast was fantastic with a wide array of pastries, fresh fruit, bagels and waffles. Not just your typical continental like we were expecting. The location is perfect, right off Duval where all the action is. Our room was quite small but we made due. We did have to live out of our suitcase with no drawers available but that was a small sacrafice for a well appointed room and cleanliness. Each room has a Keurig coffeemaker and fresh fruit waiting for you. Plush robes and slippers are located in the closet.
The pool is small but a great place to cool off. The hot tub was not working when we were there but I am not much into that anyway. There are limited chairs available in the pool area so the polite thing to do is use the chairs available and if you are leaving for lunch or to take a stroll downtown-do not try and save your chair. We watched a small altercation occur when someone tried to save a chair while they left for a few hours and someone took the chair. It was quite amusing.
The front desk is wonderful and welcoming. We did take the Wind and Wine sailing excursion one night but were not impressed with that. Very crowded and uncomfortable and your stuck between many people who may have had a little too much wine.
All in all my husband and I had an excellent stay at the Orchid Key and would never consider staying anywhere else, although we would probably upgrade to a larger room. We highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: upgrade to a larger room-it is worth it. Try to get a room by the pool.

OK, I realize I am one of the lone dissenters here but there are some things that definitely need to be noted. This hotel is heavy on pros for many of the reasons listed. But there are some distinct drawbacks that should be pointed out and I hope this review helps illuminate some of these issues. *Excuse the length!*

I don’t have to go into detail on any of the pros as the other reviews capture these well, but will definitely agree the Orchid Key Inn wins BIG points for the following:

+ LOCATION – accessible to everything, away from the height of the craziness of Duval

+ VIBE – fabulous South Beach oasis feel

+ COMFORT – rooms have many high points (i.e. exceptional bed, robes, plush towels, great décor)

Some of the cons I list seem very nit-picky. But when the hotel website states it “offers all the amenities you would find in a luxury resort” then I think it should try to live up to that – especially given the luxury prices being charged. I also feel that some of the praise for certain aspects (ahem, breakfast) are waaaay overblown here and hopefully the critiques listed below help temper some of that.

- POLICIES – while it *is* stated in the midst of a long non-HTML text confirmation email as well as in one small area of the website, note that the entire balance of your stay – plus incidental charges – is due upon check-in (not just a nominal hold). I vacation multiple times per year, staying in resorts, chain hotels, boutiques, etc. I have never once – not one single time – had a balance due upon arrival (perhaps others have and this policy isn’t unusual). This caused us some issues on a Sunday evening when we really only had our debit cards. Luckily host Brandon was accommodating and the situation was remedied.

- “FREE” BREAKFAST & HAPPY HOUR – so obviously this is covered in the (steep) rates. Only beer and wine are offered for the free HH, so I asked for a Pinot Noir and my boyfriend requested a Stella Artois. Oh no – just merlot or cab for reds and Bud or Miller for beer with the free ticket. OK, not what it was made out to be but fine – we can live with that (but skimping on that stated luxury…). The bartenders were less than enthusiastic, warm, or helpful, though. And the breakfast – what are people thinking?! This is light years away from being a B&B offering (not that I expected that) but it can’t even compare to a Hampton Inn offering. A few cereals, yogurt, unripe fruit, and baked goods on par with Sara Lee mini pastries/Lender’s bagels/Thomas English muffins/Wonder bread. Oh and hard boiled eggs (sometimes). Barely edible. But most infuriating was the tip bowl left out for the two women who were restocking the spread. No B&B or hotel I have ever been to has prompted guests for tips for stocking the provided breakfast. It was garish.

- AMENITIES – I love Bath & Body Works, but they’re hardly luxury bath products. Same goes for the sandpaper toilet paper and weak hairdryer. The non-personalized, coffee-stained welcome letter that clearly remained in the room for multiple guests exemplified the lack of attention to detail.

- ROOM SET-UP – some of the space-planning in the king deluxe room was off, such as the paltry dresser space (only enough room for me to unpack; my boyfriend lived out of his suitcase for a week), the odd use of cabinet space (a small microwave in a large cabinet that lacked shelving for any personal storage), and the otherwise beautiful faucet that was approximately 3 inches too long making washing ones face or brushing ones teeth a bit awkward.

Other annoyances during our stay: the free internet was down for three days; the $8 per day parking is clearly stated but still reflects a petty nickel & diming; and our room was located near the road and was pretty noisy (I tried calling on five separate occasions leading up to our stay – various days, times – and never once got someone live on the phone; I had been calling to confirm our reservation and to request a room by the pool – oh well).

My opinion was that the hotel was nice, but not to the level of praise being described here nor to the level in which the high prices are justified.

We are done with exploring new hotels in Key West as we will be staying at the Orchid Key Inn for every future Key West visit. This is a wonderful hotel. Extremely clean, very nice decor, wonderful location, and accomodating staff. I stayed with my wife for 2 days and we could not have asked for a better stay. The only thing we will change next trip is that we will stay longer.
We were lucky enough to book the junior spa suite - this room is top notch. Very large room, complete with a jacuzzi tub and walk in glass shower.
Location was ideal as we were able to walk to the noisy area easily and escae back to our retreat to sleep in peace and tranquility. We spent all day by the pool which had comfortable chairs, nice towels, fresh water, and the bar within walking distance.
Do yourself a favor and stay here. This place is the best.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Junior Spa Suite and it was amazing. Hope to get this room again on our next trip.

Overall - Very clean, nicely kept property. We liked the art deco touch. Extremely friendly and helpful staff.
Our room - It was next to the pool. The room was not large and the king sized bed in it did not help. Good sized shower/bathroom. Generally, the room was quiet. (a few times we could hear the people at the pool, but not often). Small fridge, microwave & coffee maker. Free wifi.
Food - no restaurant, but the Inn is on Duval St. The continental breakfast was very good. The free happy hour was nice.
Location - While the Inn is on Duval St., it is almost a mile away from where the cruise ships dock (so no massive boat people crowds). We walked to everyplace on the west side of the island without much time / effort. No laundry on site, but there is a coin laundry one block away, across from the CVS Pharmacy.
Cost - Not cheap, not resort priced either.

Room Tip: The Inn is at the intersection of Duval St. and Truman Ave. Rooms overlooking the pool are furthest...
