We booked three nights at the Nassau House based on the strength of its reviews on tripadvisor. The reservation process was promising; the woman I spoke with was very friendly and helped me pick a room based on what they had available. I had looked at the rooms online (they are all decorated differently) and felt comfortable with her suggestion.
Upon arrival, we discovered that we had been bumped, without apology or explanation, into a different room. When we asked about the change, we were told summarily that someone else with a five day reservation had been given our room, and that the rooms were 'all the same.' Ironically, we were bumped into the one room I saw online that I did not want to stay in. After discussing it, my husband and I decided to make the best of it. The hotel was full, and complaining seemed like it would only create an uncomfortable environment. Financially fufilling our contract and also finding a different place to stay was, unfortunately, not feasible.
Aside from the room switch, Nassau House was nice enough, but not really up to all the gushing praise in other reviews. The lagoon is nice, well landscaped, and a welcome dip for walk-weary feet. The dogs are very sweet and well-behaved. The breakfasts were fine -- carb heavy as mentioned earlier, but good coffee. But the much touted happy hour seems to be a pretty common phenomenon among the many, many small hotels and B&Bs on Key West.
We had a wonderful time in Key West --our first time there and our honeymoon -- and plan to return. Nassau House was just the least good part of an otherwise great trip.
