I have had a bad experience with the Tropical Inn and I would like to warn others of their very strict cancellation polices.
My friend and I were visiting Key West for the fist time to celebrate a 40Th Birthday. We chose The Tropical Inn because the website was beautifully done, serene gardens and cozy feel with tropical music playing in the background we really felt this was the best place to stay to have a lasting memory of our first trip to Key West. We even download the song "Grooving " which was the song played through out their web tour.

We book a room on July 11th and due to unforeseen medical condition (Kidney Stones) we were unable to complete our travel plans. My partners Doctor and Nurse both advised her not to travel during this time of passing the Stone they could be quiet painful to pass. From the time we had booked the reservation to the time we needed to cancel the reservation was approximately 12 days. .The Tropical Inn would not refund our deposit of $400.00 unless someone would rent the room for the same amount of days. The Tropical Inn response was “Our policy stands for a refund you had to. have canceled within our 1 month cancellation period (and we were not able to resell your room), your deposit of $401.40 is forfeited.” Jane Lowe Owner of the Tropical Inn didn’t even offer us a credit to stay at another time.

What happened to laid back Key West? Is this how you handle tourism in paradise? This is our first experience with the B&B industry and we now know to Beware before you render your credit card. Properties set their own policies; some are stricter than others. To our disappointment this incident has put a bad taste in our mouths for Key West and for the Tropical Inn.

This guest review is absolutely accurate. Indeed, we do have a one month cancellation policy. It is stated on our website, along with a link to a trip insurance company for our guests' convenience, which would have covered her deposit in just such an instance as this.

She booked her room within the cancellation period and was advised specifically at the time of booking that she was making a non-refundable, non-cancellable reservation. She accepted. Had she had any misgivings, she had plenty of time to avail herself of trip insurance or reserve elsewhere. The cancellation policy was again restated in her reservation confirmation.

Ms. Bialek cancelled 5 days in advance of her scheduled arrival date. Still, we tried to accommodate her by bending our policy. We offered to try to re-sell her room and refund her deposit, if we were successful. Unfortunately, the room did not re-sell -- a predictable outcome, given the last-minute nature of the cancellation.

When a reservation is made at our inn, we feel that both the guest and we take on an equal agreement; therefore the 50% deposit is required. Ms. Bialek's cancellation cost us lost revenue in an amount equal to her deposit for the empty room we had held for her. It is certainly more than generous to accept this penalty, incurred as the result of health issues affecting Ms. Bialek's traveling partner.

We feel that we went out of our way to accommodate this guest. We trust that other reviews on this venue validate that we are all about guest service and satisfaction ... within reason.

We stayed at the Tropical Inn for 3 nights this winter and had a lovely time. The location is excellent - right on Duval St. but far enough from the busy, noisy end near Mallory Square. We easily walked to everything we wanted to do and the hotel has parking available so you can stash your car safely and forget about it until you're ready to leave town.

We stayed in the Poinciana Suite and it was sweet. Not huge but extremely comfortable and charming in a funky, Key West style. It opened directly to it's own little patio/garden area and even though it was on the first floor, was very private due to the trees and tropical vegetation growing all around.

The courtyard and gardens around the pool are stunning, with lots of little nooks and crannies to hide out in. We ate leisurely breakfasts out there and enjoyed every minute. The included breakfast, like most B&B breakfasts in Key West, was modest but everything was fresh and there was a good assortment of fruits, yogurts, cereal, etc.

The owners and staff were helpful and friendly. They clearly take a great deal of pride in their property and it shows. We will definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — Charming decor, gardens, courtyard
  • Disliked — breakfast, but even that was ok

Where do I start, this place is a piece of heaven, my partner Maxine and I booked this place direct with the owners and they were more than helpful. Imagine my shock when we arrived and they were away themselves, leaving daughter Brandi in charge. Well I must say, Brandi you did em proud. So helpful at what could have been a stressful time for us, getting married 2nd day in Key West, needed a good florist, well done Brandi you sorted one for us. The room was a bit smaller than we expected from the web site but still very nice, the garden out back was a piece of heaven away from the hustle and bustle of Duval St and how ace was the pool after a long day up and down Duval taking in all the bars etc. As said in other reviews it is far enough away to not hear the noisier bars down Duval. We WILL be coming back, we got married 2nd July 2007 on Smathers Beach at sunset and I will never forget the most fantastic place that is Key West and the Tropical Inn.

We just spent our 10th anniv. at The Tropical Inn in Key West and just loved it!! The ambiance is refreshingly unique, tropical, and landscaping is lush. The decor is very tasteful and makes you feel like you are on some island getaway...which in a way you are. To top if off, the hosts are extremely warm and gracious. Their dog, Biscuit, is a sweetie and helps dog owners get their fix. Breakfasts were wonderful and especially nice to have poolside. The pool and grounds are gorgeous! Although the Tropical Inn is on Duval, it was very quiet. It's halfway between each end of Duval and was very convenient for everything we wanted to do. We've been to Key West many times and will defineately stay again at the Tropical Inn. Visit their website and check out the beautiful rooms. This is one special, special place and it shows. You can't go wrong with this one!

My third stay at Tropical Inn, and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Everything is exactly as I like it and Jane, Allan & Brandy are the best!

It feels like home to me and my husband (who is NOT a B&B person) loved it too(his first trip to KW). TI is private yet centraly located, the courtyard is beautiful, the upstairs porch is a blast for people watching and if you don't see something you need-they will get it for you.

Make sure to rent bikes (cars are a pain in KW no matter where you would stay) and if you need a recommendation for anything (dinner, sight-seeing, boat rentals, shopping) these people know it ALL!!!

Only home 24 hours and I can't wait to go back, don't know when that will be but I do know where I will stay...the Tropical Inn!!!
