“Best Kept Secret on Key West”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2009

My wife and I have stayed at the Best Western Key Ambassasdor for years, and although we could stay anywhere on the island, we wouldn't stay anywhere else. The management is delightful and accomodating, the staff is consistent year to year (which says a LOT), Isaac and Judy at the Cheekie Hut remember our names at every visit and make us feel right at home with friendly conversation and big delicious drinks.. The large pool and spacious grounds are pristine, the rooms are clean, cool, and comfortable, and our every need is met upon request. The location offers a beautiful ocean view overlooking the pool and tropically landscaped grounds. It is a peaceful daily escape from the nightlife which is a few short miles away.
This place is exactly what Key West is about - tropical charm, comfort, and hospitality.

The hotel and staff were outstanding. The accomodations were more than what we expected clean and great prices.

We are definitely coming back for another stay here. They say you cant please all the people all the time, who ever has complaints about this place shouldnt have been let out of their rubber room in their insitution anyway.
awesome!!

We have a large room with a king size bed. We requested a balcony on the second floor but ended up in a room with a large window and a couch with a view of the ocean. It was very hot so we enjoyed being in the air conditioned room and probably would not have sat out on the balcony anyway. The continential breakfast was great and the sunsets over the ocean were amazing.

The pool closed early and would be nice if it stayed open after 8:00 P.M. However, the pool is beautiful as is the scenery around the pool. The hotel is away from all the noise of Duval Street. However you can get a bus pass for a week , with we found out on our own as the hotel personnel did not tell us about that, for $8.00 a person and the bus stops at the hotel every 1/2 hour or so. You can catch it back to the hotel up until 10:30 at night.

We did rent a scooter to get around for a day and it is a great way to travel and get around. Next time we will rent one for several days.

Our room was clean and equipped with a microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator. We will definitely stay there again when we travel to Key West.

We stayed for two nights while visiting Key West. It was a fine place, but low on frills. The front lobby had a funny smell, and the front desk personnel weren't particularly friendly. The room was large with 2 (firm and comfortable) double beds, but low on furniture (one dresser, the TV hutch, and a small table). The bathroom had a separate area with sink/mirror, which was very nice. The balcony was large and screened in, but overlooked a parking lot. It was a good place to dry wet dive gear at least. The AC worked well and was reasonably quiet, which was important in late June. The pool was nice, if a little shallow, and there was a tiki bar in the pool area. However, the bar stopped serving snacks at 6 (last call 5:30), which was really inconvenient, so we never made it down there.
Transportation was also a little difficult. The hotel would really benefit from some kind of shuttle. There is bus service, but the bus was running 15 minutes late when we took it, and the last bus back was at 10:30, so we had to take a cab ($16 plus tip). The cab was fine for one night, but would get expensive on a longer trip.
We didn't stay anywhere else on Key West, so I have nothing to compare it to locally. However, I wasn't impressed, and wouldn't pay the $170 rate to stay there again (used bonus points for this trip).

This hotel is great the front desk Lady Kate and the breakfest bar woman were both great too. Very nice pool except it closed at 8pm.. come on people. Its an older property but very well taken care of. Planning next years vacation already to the same spot.

I am astounded at the good reviews of this hotel (based on which I had booked, in spite of bad experiences with other Best Westerns), as it was unfortunately one of the most grotty places I've ever stayed in. We got off to a bad start with Connie at the front desk who didn't smile and made us feel like a nuisance (note, however, that later reception staff was extremely pleasant and helpful). Given the off-peak season we asked for a seaview - upon which we were told we'd have to pay $60 per night extra (needless to say we left it). Don't get a room on the 2nd floor if you have mobility problems or heavy suitcases as there is no lift. The room itself was very big but dark, badly decorated and very badly maintained. The surfaces are clean - the cleaners (who are also very kind) do a pretty good job but there's no scrubbing away the mould, caked dirt and rust. A particular low point was the bathroom: the ceiling actually had large holes in it, through which we were treated to first a dead millipede in the bathtub, and subsequently a series of creepy crawlies on the towels. I tried not to think of what else was up there, ready to drop into my hair. There was a terrible smell of dampness from the bathroom aswell, which did not go away after I sprayed the place with Dettol. Had we been staying in Key West for longer than 2 nights, I certainly would have left. As part of a driving tour of Florida we stayed in everything from 5-star hotels to motels, and I would have gladly replaced the Best Western with any of the roadside motels. Given the Key West prices and our short stay there I wasn't looking for luxury - what bugs me is that they have done just the barest minimum amount of maintenance they could get away with. The 2 star motels I've stayed in show that it is possible to offer a basic, but well-maintained room. I recommend that you pay a bit extra and try one of the other hotels - or hold off booking until you have seen the room yourself. In terms of location, it is away from the town but there is a bus which stops right outside the reception (ask for a time table at check-in as it doesn't come very often). Last service is around 7.30pm so you'll have to get a taxi back to the hotel.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights recently and really enjoyed our stay. Having stayed in both high-end and budget hotels in the past, I would consider this a clean, comfortable, well-maintained budget hotel. The location is just a few minutes into Key West, near the airport (the noise was not bothersome to us- we only heard a few airplanes the entire time). The hotel consists of a u-shaped building that surrounds the pool/tiki-bar where most rooms would have a partial or full ocean view. Our building was a short walk from the pool across a small parking lot. Though this building was quieter and closer to the continental breakfast room, it did not have an ocean view. (Not a complaint- we requested quiet)

The breakfast was good for a continental breakfast, though on three mornings we opted to eat out because the restaurants on Key West are so great. The pool was wonderful...not too full or loud with plenty of chairs and a bar. The pool closed at 9PM, which was a little annoying.

To be clear, there is NO beach at this hotel. The hotel sits on one of the busier roads in Key West. Directly across the road is a boardwalk wide enough to bike, rollerblade, etc. that drops off immediately to the water. No sand. On the bright side, it is absolutely beautiful and great to walk at night- we felt very safe. If you are looking for a beach, there is a nice one about a mile down the street and several closer to Duval Street. We did not miss having a beach at the hotel, however, we did have a car which made it easy to navigate the island.

Duval Street is wonderful. The nightlife, shopping, and restaurants were all great. We had fabulous food the entire time. My top recommendations, along with a ton of others on here are: Blue Heaven, Salsa Loca, and the Rooftop Cafe. The hotel is not within walking distance of Duval Street (for most). You can rent scooters to get around the island. We did not do this, but will next time. They are not only fun, but easy to park, and parking is scarce and/or expensive near Duval (we spent anywhere from $10-$30 a day to park if we did not get there before 5PM when non-paid parking is more readily available). The trolley tour stops outside the hotel every half hour, but does not run late into the evening, and costs $29 per person per day. Taxis are available in a pinch but are also expensive.

The only three small negatives I had for this hotel were:
-the location (which is okay if you have a car and don't plan on drinking much). I am pregnant, so my husband had a designated driver. Next time I think we would stay closer to Duval and not rent the car in order to be closer to the nightlife and restaurants.
-the rooms are a dated with no-frills. I can't really complain about this based on the price we paid, but don't go expecting anything luxurious. (the beds are very comfortable though!)
-the beds.....though they were very comfortable (think NOT firm) they were also very small. I have never been to a hotel where 'two doubles' means 'two full beds'. My husband and I usually ended up in separate beds by the end of the night because we like our space and are used to a queen bed. Amusingly, the rooms are absolutely huge and could more than afford two queens. The television was so far from our bed that it had to be turned up extremely loud to hear it 'all the way over there'.

Overall, if you are looking for an inexpensive hotel with close access to active area of Key West without the cost, this is a great option. I would recommend it, however, next time I feel that we'll splurge for a closer hotel and save on the rental car and parking.
