I fell in love with Key West the first time I went there. On Valentine's Day of 2004, my boyfriend gave me a pocketbook as a gift. And, inside of the bag were tickets to go to Key West for my birthday that April.
When the cab took us to from the Key West Airport to The Ocean Key, I couldn't catch my breath. It was beautiful. I'd stayed in Key West before, at the Hyatt, and - while the Hyatt was lovely - I was taken with The Ocean Key from the moment I stepped in to the lobby. I loved the decor and the relaxed atmosphere and the hospitality and friendliness of everyone who worked there.
We were early, and our room wasn't ready, so I took my boyfriend (who had never been to KW) for a stroll up Duval Street.
His cell phone rang a couple of hours later; and it was the front desk to let us know our room was ready.
Wow.
We went to the top floor, to an ocean front room, and I was speechless.
I can remember, during prior trips, standing in Mallory Square and watching the people on their balconies at The Ocean Key thinking, 'I hope that's me up there some day...'
And there I was.
I loved everything about the hotel - everything about the room - it was my dream birthday weekend.
The sleigh-bed was huge and so very comfortable. The hand-painted furniture in the room was beautiful. I absolutely loved that, from the jacuzzi, we could see the water - I could go on forever.
Everything was there for us - The Pier - Hot Tin Roof - Mallory Square - the amazing cruise ships coming in to port for the day - the ambiance and the staff were all just incredible.
We had dinner outdoors at the hotel that evening. I asked my boyfriend where he would like to see his first Key West sunset. (We weren't sure if we should do it from Mallory Square, the pier, or our own balcony.) He opted for the balcony so, after enjoying a delicious drink at the outdoor bar, we went back up to the room.
When we did, I walked in to find candles, roses, rose petals, a bottle of champagne on ice, chocolate-covered strawberries - and so on.
We went out on to the balcony, opened the champagne, watched the sunset, and I was proposed to.
The next morning when we went down for breakfast, the entire staff came running up to me to see my ring - congratulate me - and to ask if everything was the way my fiancee wanted it to be. Apparently, they went above and beyond my fiancee's expectations to be sure that everything was perfect. And it was perfect.
We were married exactly one year later.
I hope this doesn't sound more like an engagement story than a hotel review.
Because, without the ambiance and the staff and the sheer beauty of it all, it could never have been as memorable as it will always be.
We will stay at the Ocean Key every time we visit Key West.
It's a magical place.
