“Interesting”

This was a neat part of the drive to Key west, but it is just a long bridge/road afterall, so nothing too exciting.

“Not what I expected!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

I've seen better views by far but the culture is what I liked the most. The swampy area's along the highway smell very bad and the ocean view is not the best. Certain Keys have a ton of run down shacks and vacant buildings which take you by surprise! This 2 lane highway starts out in the Everglades National park but you don't get to see much from the highway from over the tall brush and fencing. Once in the Keys you start to get some Ocean & Gulf views but they are just okay..water looks murky in most places when not buried behind the trees, homes, restaurants & store fronts. The best part was driving over the large bridges high above the water where you are higher than the power lines in some spots. Many of the Keys have stores, restaurants, gas stations, bars etc to stop at along the way. If there was another way to get to Key West by driving I would probably take it! Traffic is fairly slow during the day since it is only two lanes & at night you can't see a thing! Bottom line: if you're afraid of heights, don't like water & don't want to see how the people in the Keys live then you better fly instead of taking the long 2 hour drive down Hwy 1 to Key West.

“an engineering marvel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Part of the drive to the island of Key West
The high way is two lanes wide, so drive carefully better yet if someone else is driving. There are plenty of look out points to stop and take in the beautiful views and take a few pictures.

“Walk the old 7 mile bridge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

As you're heading south, just before you leave Knights Key (south end of Marathon) and enter the bridge, pull off into the parking lot on your right (this is the parking lot used in True Lies). Have patience and keep your eye on the water on the right hand (Gulf) side of the water as you walk out. We've seen some wonderful things there, big rays, a turtle, shark, etc., as well as the iguanas near the parking lot. Even if you don't see anything, it's a beautiful walk on a grand piece of history.

“Sea of Color”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Traveling over several bridges, the scenery and the beautiful blues and greens of the ocean are breathtaking. Stop at mile marker 100 and see the African Queen boat that was used in the Humphrey Bogart Movie "African Queen. Patience is important while traveling because this highway is only two lanes for approximately 110. There are several islands between the beginning of the highway until Key West. Very nice trip.
