“Key West Cemetery”

Key West Cemetery

The Key West Cemetery is interesting- but I find myself drawn to cemeteries all over the world. We never found the famous " I told you I was Sick" tombstone but had fun searching for it. If you want to go- do your research first to know the general area for what you are looking for as the cemetery was larger than I imagined. There were various birds and lizards through out and it was nice to get out of old town for a bit!

“Loved the garden”

This was one of our must-see spots but we did not have good directions. Luckily a local told us how to get there and it was right across the street from the Heron House where we were staying. The garden is absolutely beautiful and the rescued birds are very entertaining. Nancy spent a lot of time with us giving the history of the garden and the birds, and we found her warm, friendly, and very caring about her work. I highly recommend visiting this little piece of paradise.

“Tropical Oasis away from McTourist Attractions”

Key West Cemetery

This is a must visit place for each of our Key West trips.

Think quiet park with hundreds of types of tropical foliage and palm trees in an area that used to be a public dumping area and that very easily could be an asphalt parking lot for yet another overpriced condo.

We try to grab some sandwitches and head over for a picnic. There are tables spread throughout the yard. The plants block the sun but they also block any breeze so choose your weather carefully and don't forget the insect repellent.

The 'entrance fee' is a desparate attempt to save the yard and the decades of work that went into it. The lot is taxed as if it were condos so its almost impossible to even pay the property taxes. Think of it as a donation to the fit and its not so bad.

Overall, its nice place for some quiet time away from the crowds. Elliot and Nancy have sobering stories to tell about trying to save this piece of nature from development and over-taxation.

Each time I visit Key West I visit Nancy's Secret Garden. I absolutely love it. Nowhere can you go and see such a grand collection of tropical flowers and plants. And the BIRDS!!
Well worth the admission. Each time I hear of someone going to Key West, I tell them about Nancy's Secret Garden. and many have returned and told me how much they enjoyed it.

We drove past the cemetary. Upon driving around it all the parking seems to be residential. I would suggest going by bike or walking. I did not realize how close we were when we stayed at the B&B on TRUMAN. Heading away from Duval On Truman passing the bed and breakfast inn's on the left....the cemetary is left at the light past Teaser's gentleman's club.
