Owner description: The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. “A quiet haven in Key West”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

If you need a place to get out of the heat in Key West, visit the Audubon House and Gardens. It is a beautifully restored house that features framed prints of Audubon's birds and flowers. The rooms have been restored to the original time that Audubon spent in Key West. Upstairs are the children's bedrooms and a guest room. Audubon did not own the house, but spent time here in Key West. The gardens are filled with tropical flowers. It is a nice place to spend some quiet and peaceful time. There is a small fee to tour the house and gardens. A good place to step back in time.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

The Audubon house has an interesting history, and both its interior and gardens are beautiful. Audubon' prints are masterpieces well worth long stares for all the detail they provide. I was stunned to learn the original prints were real to size, thinking what a work it must have been not only to do such beautifully detailed work but right to size as well. The house contains some furniture from the time period, including amazing patchwork bed covers and a pair of what must have been some of the very first roller skates, replete with wood and leather straps to fix below the knee (not much ankle flexibility I thought), but very interesting to see. Most interesting, besides the beautiful prints, was possibly the underlying story of art sponsorship at the time of Audubon who never owned this house but only spent a few months there, painting some pieces for his patron's house. We learned there are another 3 or 4 such "Audubon" houses in the US. A nice place to visit.

The tour of the house didn't impress me. Lots of original Audubon drawings of local birds. Some old furniture displayed, The Gardens were nice but if you hit Key West when everything is blooming you will only see a few unusual flowers/plants that aren't in the surrounding yards

“Somewhat interesting but mostly disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

The grounds were being used to plan for a wedding so not readily accessible. The docent remained on first floor so it became a self directed tour.

“Beautiful gardens and paintings”

This was very informational, beautiful, and the staff were so nice and welcoming. The tour guide at the beginning is great. He tells you what you need to know then you explore on your own.
