Owner description: The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. Let us make your event happen.

“Beautiful and good escape from heat in summer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

This is a beautiful house and gardens. Be sure to do the audio tour headset. Even my teenagers were interested. This is a great spot to go in the afternoon to escape the heat. Save this one until the afternoon. Unbelievable history through the years of just this house alone.

“Beautiful Gardens and Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

When we came out of Mel Fisher Museum, House directly across the street, the house had closed. Still you can walk around on both streets and see the home's beautiful gardens and exterior. The orchids were in bloom. The house, setting and gardens made it a great place for pictures.

“for the birds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

considering all the wonderful and historic sights to see in Key West this place left a lot to be desired. Great that they are preserving a wonderful historic site, but the tour left us wanting more.

“must see for any art & garden lover”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

The house is not very big, but nicely furnished with period pieces. On the 3rd floor you will find the "22 birds of Key West" collection which is absolutely beautiful. Take time at the end to roam the gardens - the flowers are amazing. Perfect place for taking beautiful pictures. Also the gift shop is not your regular, cheap kind of gift shop - it has very nice, unique gifts.
If you are an art and flower lover, you will definitely love this place.

“Not what excepted, but nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Audubon never lived in this house, though he did visit. It is full of beautiful first edition prints and historically accurate furnishings. While we were there, the staff was adding in descriptive signs to provide more details. The top floor was full of prints and paintings of all the birds of the Keys. The tour was very short, but had some interesting facts. The grounds were nice, but not what I expected for tropical gardens. Overall, I would say to visit if you have a special interest in Audubon or just some extra time available.
