I find the beach at Fort Zac to be one of the best places in the Keys to snorkel without going out on a boat to one of the reefs. Also take a tour of the Fort, and if you can, come visit during the Pirates Festival the first weekend in December.

Not too far from downtown, decent beach. There's a hut which rents umbrellas, and lounge chairs--but not towels, so be sure to bring your own.

Ft. Zach is a quick ride or reasonable walk from the Duval Street area. It's very clean, has all the amenities you'll need, snack bar, chair rental, water floats, bathrooms, showers. Key West beaches are not like the beaches of other parts of FLA or Cape Cod, but it's still beautiful. It's wise to wear water shoes or crocs when entering the water as there is alot of coral on the bottom. Would absolutely recommend this beach if you are looking for some R&R after a light night on Duval Street. There is an entry fee to get into the park as well as the rental fees of chairs, floats, but that's typical for state parks.
Didn't bother going in since we would have had to pay $8.00 and all we could see from the entry were carnival rides; no fort in sight, felt like a county fair. No thanks!
Beautiful water, lush vegetation, water craft of every sort going by, paths to walk, an excellent snack bar - one of our favorite beaches, a short walk from downtown Key West.
