“Sub-par Crazy-people beach”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

This beach was dirty. There was debris in the water and on the shore. It was packed with people. There were a lot of CRAZY people. We brought a picnic lunch and an older man in a Speedo tried over and over to get our attention by slamming multiple Frisbees into the garbage can next to us (Mumbling under his breath the whole time). There is not a lot of natural shade. Instead, they have erected these ugly concrete gazebos. There was a man playing jamming on his guitar under one. He played for a few minutes before an intoxicated woman came over and harassed him. She kept saying “Come play closer to us!!!” grabbing at him. The seagulls at this beach were even aggressive. A bunch of them flocked my sister and stole half of her sandwich right out her hand. As we biked away, I couldn’t get that Jimmy Buffett song out of my head about Crazy Desdemona. Smathers Beach may have inspired it.

“Peaceful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013 via mobile

Soft sand and very relaxing. Key West is not known for it's beaches so if you're looking for that then you should probably go elsewhere. This place is nice and pretty. You can rent umbrellas and chairs if you'd like, or take your own. The only thing I didn't like was the beach bums who were sleeping there and showed their dismay if you made too much noise. Otherwise, the beach is free and so is the parking.

“Beautiful”

Such a beautiful beach! White sand and so so soft. Not too crowded and also great for sunsets. Beautiful place for a beach wedding. Sister was married there in a small ceremony and was perfect!

“Well, Key West isn't known for it's beaches anyway”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Average, small beach with chairs/umbrellas to rent for $20. With the three kids, we stayed for a few hours and rented the beach gear, which was nice in the warm sun. Kids had fun, particularly when the birds dropped a fish about 10 feet away and helped the fish back into the water! Anyway, there's an outdoor shower that worked fine, beach volleyball set up, men's and women's bathrooms, small playground. Saw one guy I presumed was homeless (uh, shopping cart piled with clothes and knick knacks...) who was hanging around the parking lot, but kept to himself.

“We stayed at the Sheraton Suites and Smathers Beach was right across the street!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

Smather's Beach was a 2 minute walk from our hotel. We walked on the beach several times. We saw pelicans, sand pipers, herons, anhingas and egrets. It is a small beach, but when you think about all the sand being shipped in because the Keys don't have any naturally, it is pretty impressive!!!
