Like I said, don't miss the sunset on Mallory Square. Everybody comes in the evening to Mallory Square to watch the sunset. There are lots of people and lots of entertainers such as jugglers, tight rope walkers, trained animals, fire eaters, escape artists, and many other performances designed to amuse you. It’s fun to watch them. Take your favourite drink, sit down, make sure that you have your camera ready and than watch the sun goes down. It's a nice way to begin your evening.
I had heard all the talk about Mallory Sq. and tucked it away in a nice little spot in the back of my mind. My wife and I were there for our honeymoon. We drove the whole way (from N GA) and were exhausted the first day. On the morning of the second day, I heard someone mention Mallory Sq. and it came back to the top of my mind. That evening my wife and I made our way to Mallory and were completely changed forever.
We were taken by all the street performers and local artists/vendors that set up shop on the square. We walked around for a bit and were intoxicated with the culture, smells, and sounds. Then we looked west….. Right in front of my eyes was the most amazingly beautiful thing I have ever seen, the sunset from Mallory Square.
We made our way to the end of the dock and grabbed a seat. I don't think either of us said a word for over an hour. The clouds swayed across the sky while the sun's beams danced across the water. Silhouettes of sailboats were like chapters in book.
Needless to say, we made our way to Mallory Square every evening. This was the essence of the Keys. You can't visit Key West without sitting at Mallory Square and watching God's paintings in the sky.

Sunset was around 6 and we scored our seat around 2... sounds a bit crazy huh... yeah, the place was empty so we walked back to the two museums and returned around 4. It was CROWDED! We managed to get a place to sit along the water, saw the Cruise ship leave port and then the sunset. TIP: If you are at the Hilton side along the water (where the cruise ships leave from), you'd see the sun set into the sea. We were further away and had to be content seeing the sun set on the edge of one of the islands. And yeah, the guacamole (sp?) stand is a must-try.
Don't miss this. Yeah, the crowd and stuff for sale is a little hokey, but this is KW and you should expect a little Conch Craziness. Head down early, because everyone else is going that way and if there is a ship in, space and view along the edge of the pier are scarce. The guacamole cart is outstanding. They make it fresh before your eyes and give you a bag of Santitos. Perfect accompaniment to a frozen drink.
Here's a tip. There is a stand that dispenses (literally) frozen drinks at the south end of the square. Drinks are ok, but to the right, slightly behind the stand are a series of raised tables and benches that allow you to look over the crowd at the sunset.
