Just arrived back from the Kawama Yacht Club.
We flew into Orlando, had 2 nights there (Best Western Movieland) then drove down to Key Largo.
We went on the Florida Turnpike, overall costs for tolls all the way down is approximately $20. They do accept coins/notes.
The drive took about 5 1/2 hours.
We stayed in a 2 bed/2 bathroom tower apartment (Room 211), which was very spacious and clean, lovely view over the swimming pool to the Marina and the sea beyond.
Kawama Yacht club is a large complex with security gates. There appears to be different types of apartments and condos on the property, but we are glad that we chose to stay in the Tower.
You needed a key to enter the lift/stairs to get up to the apartment and also to access the tower swimming pool area.
At first I thought that this was going to be a pain, but it worked out great, as we had the pool to ourselves most days, as only people who stay in the Tower can access this pool.
There is another pool but we didnt use that one.
On holiday was myself (38), hubby (45) and two boys of 16 and 18.
The lads went fishing most days at the end of the dock, where there were big fish to be had.
On an evening we strolled (20 mins) up to the Pilot House Tiki Bar, which had free pool tables for the lads.
We didn't eat in the restaurant side of the Pilot House, only in the bar area where it was mostly basket meals, but they were good.
There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance (by that I mean we didn't have to walk down US1 to get to them). We did try Calypsos, but I didn't particularly like that, so we didn't go again.
We drove out once to a restaurant called Snr Frejos (think that is how it is spelt), where we had tacos, and a FANTASTIC marguarita... yum....
During the day, we went to John Pennenkamp state park where we went kayaking, it costs about $8 to get into the park, but once in there, there are plenty of facilities for snorkelling trips and glass bottom boat trips. Its about 2 miles from the apartment.
We went up to Florida City mall (about 26 miles away) so the boys could buy the usual trainers and Jeans.
Also Key West is fabulous, what a drive down, unbelievable.
Robert (16) went on an all day fishing trip with Gulf Stream party boats, it costs $60 with $5 rod/reel rental. They don't have food/drinks to buy on board but allow you to take on picnics (no glass though). Its near the Pilot House bar, so about 20 mins walk...
Nearest supermarket is Publix about 1 mile away but there is a Wallgreens, McDonalds and Burger King within 3 mins drive or 30 mins walk.
Overall had a fantastic time.
