We stayed in a 3-bedroom condo at the Kawama Yacht Club for a week in August, 2007. There were three couples in our party, so it was perfect in terms of the amount of space.

What we liked: we really enjoyed having access to a kitchen and living/family room, where we could hang out together after the day's activities (not something you can easily replicate in a hotel). The location is pretty good too -- easy access to US1 and all the local restaurants/activities. Finally, the cost, which was a lot cheaper than the hotels we were considering, was definitely a plus.

What we didn't like: we were completely unimpressed with the pool (tiny and dirty), 'beach' and lagoon (also very dirty). I couldn't imagine swimming in either the pool or the lagoon -- that was defiitely something we missed.

Stayed here for a week from 5th July after a couple of weeks of theme parks in Orlando.
We rented a beautiful two story house in Block B overlooking the pool and close to the lagoon.
Kawama is an excellent location for a holiday....containing a mixture of houses and apartments, a marina, swimming pools and a saltwater lagoon ideal for snorkelling, the complex is maintained to a very high standard...ideal for families and couples.
About 10-15 minutes walk away are a couple of restaurants/bars including the Pilot House with excellent food and atmosphere.
Publix supermarket is about ten minutes by car.
Close by also is John Pennecamp Park for swimming, snorkelling & coral reef trips, kayaking.
Dont miss a trip to Key West, 2 1/2 hours drive but worth it....stop at the Seven Mile Bridge on the way back for the sunset.
Plent of options for fishing trips and renting boats, including Robbies Marina where you can also feed massive Tarpon.
Eating out was a joy...as an example try the Islamorada Fish Company.
We had two teenagers with us and they had a ball...a week is not long enough.

We stayed at the complex in Feb 2007. It is nicely located away from the US1 so is a better bet for peace and quiet. Remember this when you look at other complex locations.

I found the tower condo through a US rental website. It was large and well equipped. During our stay, the 'Tower' swimming pool was being built & block paving laid, which unfortunately resulted in severe noise (I guess this is now complete having looked at a later review). Our owners had another SUPER villa on the site which they moved us to at nil cost. They were great!

The complex is nicely landscaped and the harbour area gives it good ocean frontage. I would recommend the Tower Condos especially those facing the ocean. Hunt around as there are quite a few to rent.

A must is the day trip to Key West - where if possible stay over a night (avoid weekends).

Key Largo has good facilities and we chose this island as we could get to Miami & South Beach for a day.

We loved eating at the Pilot House which was a 10 minute walk meaning a drink could be had.

I would recommend this place for a chilling out time!

Just arrived back from the Kawama Yacht Club.

We flew into Orlando, had 2 nights there (Best Western Movieland) then drove down to Key Largo.

We went on the Florida Turnpike, overall costs for tolls all the way down is approximately $20. They do accept coins/notes.

The drive took about 5 1/2 hours.

We stayed in a 2 bed/2 bathroom tower apartment (Room 211), which was very spacious and clean, lovely view over the swimming pool to the Marina and the sea beyond.

Kawama Yacht club is a large complex with security gates. There appears to be different types of apartments and condos on the property, but we are glad that we chose to stay in the Tower.

You needed a key to enter the lift/stairs to get up to the apartment and also to access the tower swimming pool area.

At first I thought that this was going to be a pain, but it worked out great, as we had the pool to ourselves most days, as only people who stay in the Tower can access this pool.

There is another pool but we didnt use that one.

On holiday was myself (38), hubby (45) and two boys of 16 and 18.

The lads went fishing most days at the end of the dock, where there were big fish to be had.

On an evening we strolled (20 mins) up to the Pilot House Tiki Bar, which had free pool tables for the lads.

We didn't eat in the restaurant side of the Pilot House, only in the bar area where it was mostly basket meals, but they were good.

There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance (by that I mean we didn't have to walk down US1 to get to them). We did try Calypsos, but I didn't particularly like that, so we didn't go again.

We drove out once to a restaurant called Snr Frejos (think that is how it is spelt), where we had tacos, and a FANTASTIC marguarita... yum....

During the day, we went to John Pennenkamp state park where we went kayaking, it costs about $8 to get into the park, but once in there, there are plenty of facilities for snorkelling trips and glass bottom boat trips. Its about 2 miles from the apartment.

We went up to Florida City mall (about 26 miles away) so the boys could buy the usual trainers and Jeans.

Also Key West is fabulous, what a drive down, unbelievable.

Robert (16) went on an all day fishing trip with Gulf Stream party boats, it costs $60 with $5 rod/reel rental. They don't have food/drinks to buy on board but allow you to take on picnics (no glass though). Its near the Pilot House bar, so about 20 mins walk...

Nearest supermarket is Publix about 1 mile away but there is a Wallgreens, McDonalds and Burger King within 3 mins drive or 30 mins walk.

Overall had a fantastic time.
