“What a dump”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2012

Readign reviews here on Tripadvisor, I had the address for this place when I went to Florida? We got to Key largo late in the evening, so I didn't feel like looking around for a place to stay, and this place had good reviews.

Of course, I now wish I had looked around, and I should have left and never spent the night.

The receptionist was nice enough and check-in went quickly.

Now, the room. We had one with a kitchenette and as soon as you came in there was a horrendous chemical smell. Ladies won't know this, but it's like smell of the coloured chemical blocks they put in urinals to keep them clean, but then ten times worse. It was a nightmare. The bed was useless, so we hardly slept, the kitchen was awful and the furniture was falling apart. The aircon looked like a unit from the 50s with a dial, so adjusting that needed alot of finesse.

The outside was in need of a thorough cleaning and a refresh. The sign was fading and falling apart, and there was a large white van with a for sale sign in the drive. There were weeds everywhere and they could at least have swept the drive in the last decade. There is water access at the back, but this was a boat dock, so there was a little ladder into the water which was deep. So letting children play there would be highly dangerous.

I would say, maybe if you ar a fischerman and would like to tell your friends you were "roughing it", this place would qualify as such. But for civilised people, please avoid this dump and book anywhere else.

STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE, IT STINKS (literally).

I recently stayed the weekend in Key Largo to attend a friend's birthday party. This place has a great view of the bay and the sunset in the evening. The lady at the front desk was very nice and check in/out was a breeze. The rates at Stone Ledge are pretty good considering nearby comparisons. The hotel itself is old, but is well maintained. This place has that old keys feel and charm, but it is not the Hilton so don't expect it to be as such. The rooms look like they were decorated around 1984 and have not been touched since. The rooms were very clean and the linens were fresh. My only complaint was the bed, it was rock hard! I generally like a firm mattress, but this was not far off from sleeping on the floor. All in all I like this place for what it was.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a higher number. The lowered numbered rooms are closer to the road and you can he...

We enjoyed our 3 night stay very much. The room was clean. The price was right, however, next time we will consider looking into the bungalows closer to the water which I believe are more like efficiency apartments rather than a motel room. We were in Room #1 which was the closest to the highway, so there was just a little bit of traffic noise. It is located on Florida Bay so the water is calm with a small beach and a pier where people can fish or just relax and look at the beautiful view. My husband & I took the kayak out and that was great!!!!!! The front desk staff, Jose and/or Barbara, were extremely pleasant and always available to assist us in any way. The housekeeping staff were very pleasant as well. Bring your own shampoo. Our refrigerator was broken and Jose arranged for a new refrigerator by the next morning. It was a short drive to any restaurants. We would definitely stay there again if we find ourselves heading to the Keys again.

Room was spacious and clean with old charm character. Tv, fridge and great shower.
Located on the Florida bay side with great views and a jetty where canoes are available free of charge to guests. WiFi is also available foc. There are also sunloungers and a play area for kids. Jose works on reception and he is very courteous and friendly.
Although in a quiet location and sited close to the Tavernier district its only a short drive to the restaurants, shops and national park.
Reasonable rates. My only concern was security as the area seemed very quiet and dark.
Pay a visit to The Caribbean club, Sundowners and The African Queen boat.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the water rather than the road.

I've stayed here several times in the past and found it a good value stopping off point after flying into Miami. This time Stone Ledge had different owners. The place seemed pretty much as it was on previous visits, but on closer examination, time had taken its toll on the bungalows. My one was closer to the sea, making it further away from the traffic noise of US1. Whilst the bed and linen were clean and fresh, the bungalow, particularly the bathroom needed attention. Work had been carried out on the floor, which had been badly patched. Where internal walls had been removed, unpainted wood was left. The front door didn't lock properly, meaning to gain entry, after the door had been locked, all that was necessary was to shake the door knob and in seconds you were in. If fact I never bothered to use the key to get in at all, just the shaking of the knob. Needless to say, valuables were locked in the boot of the hire car! On the plus side, the jetty was an ideal place to fish, or just to watch the setting sun. The sea was shallow and ideal for snorkelling, while the small man made beach and loungers were a pleasant place to unwind. Would I stay there again? Probably, if only for the excellent value for money. I did see an add for a motel for sale, which looked much like Stone Ledge, so if it is sold, perhaps it will see a new lease of life?

Room Tip: Nearer the sea should be quieter, but ask to see the room first would be my tip.

The room is quite basic, nothing fancy, has a small fridge and the wi-fi was not bad. Remember to bring your own shampoo. The view from the dock is amazing. The staff are very friendly. They helped us with the kayak and we had a blast. A nice place to stop and relax on your way to Key West, the Everglades or Miami.

Room Tip: No shampoo in the bathroom. Bring your own. Kayak is free for the guests and a lot of fun.

As usual we had an awesome time during our annual vacation for the Homestead race. It was great to see Barb again and to meet Jose. We have always enjoyed our stay at Stone Ledge, the staff is always so pleasant and accommodating. We look forward to this trip every year and I've already booked my rooms for next year!! We love to spend our vacation at Stone Ledge because it's so relaxing and we love the fishing!!
