My wife & I chose this hotel after reading many reviews on here and other sites, and I knew going in that it would be "iffy." The positive aspects of our stay: the location is fantastic for the Key Largo area. We were there to scuba & snorkel and there are several dive charters right there on the canal. We also took in a glass bottom boat ride that is right there by the hotel. Room service is only every other day, but we found that to be delightful as we never felt 'bothered' by working around a cleaning schedule. There are plenty of places to eat and there are a couple of open bars with live entertainment near the hotel.....except for Sunday nights as it gets quit then. This is where the positives stop though and the negative aspects weigh in. The hotel is older and in desperate need of some basic TLC. When we entered our room we must have literally walked in behind the cleaning person, because the toilet was still filling up from having just been flushed and there were cigarette ashes on the toilet seat. We then noticed that both showers floors (up/downstairs) were filthy and to the point that we didn't want to stand in them without flip flops on. The rear sliding glass door blinds had over half of the pieces missing which meant there was no way to prevent onlookers from peering into your room from across the canal. Dishes, there was exactly "one" spoon to be shared (easily remedied by getting plastic ware at the local store). When we filled the upstairs bathtub one evening, there was a substantial water leak coming through the 2nd floor and onto the kitchen floor- to the point that we had to place a cooler there until we drained the tub. The worst part: they have hard wired fire/smoke alarms on each floor (NOT battery operated). On our first night, the fire alarms went off at 3:20 am for no reason. On the 2nd night, the alarms went off at 11:25 pm, and again at 5:30 am, and again for no reason. I told the office about it and was told they cannot reach the hotel manager or do anything about the alarms. However, they did offer to move us to another room but really, it was our last night and we didn't want to deal with the hassle of collecting our belongings and groceries, etc, for one night. Well, we should have, because on the last night the fire alarms went off again around 4 am. The hotel did comp us for one night which was greatly appreciated in the end, but not getting one single good night's sleep was a bigger loss to us than gaining the one free night's stay. As stated, a little TLC would go a long way for this hotel and make it a great place to stay in the perfect location. We would instead choose the Ramada Inn Limited, Holiday Inn, or the Marina del Mar instead. They are all along the same canal and the dive charters are literally docked alongside each of them.
