Sundowner's is a great little place, tucked away between another restaurant and huge condo/bar at mile marker 104. Look for the sign and make sure to turn into the correct parking lot. Senior Frijoles is also on the same property. Do not heed the bad reviews... Sundowner's is awesome and has been my favorite for about 10 years. Every bar/restaurant has the occasional staff issue; it's the nature of the business, so certain reviews will be tainted by this fact. Some diners probably get bad service, no matter where they go, and should check their own behavior and attitude. Sundowner's is consistently top shelf and something I always look forward to on my trips to the Keys.
If you're looking for bar food or $5 sandwiches... this is not the place for you. If you're looking for white linens, fine silver, and wait staff in white shirts and bow ties... this is not the place for you. However, if you want fantastic seafood, steaks that rival a true steakhouse, unique dishes and sides, tasty specialty drinks and a well put together wine list... Sundowner's can't be beat. By the way, there's a reason it's called 'Sundowner's'. The view at sundown is breathtaking. Heck, it's great anytime.
Menu prices have been reported as 'high' by some reviewers. Don't know what they were expecting, but any restaurant of this caliber has similar pricing, which is not bad at all. I consider Sundowner's moderately priced, but you get what you pay for. This ain't a biker bar or beach-bum shack... it's a finer restaurant with a very casual feel. Flip-flops or wing-tips are equally welcome.
My menu picks:
Starters: Spinach/Artichoke Dip and Blackened Tuna Sashimi
Soup: Lobster Bisque, of course
Salad: House is great and always fresh
Sandwich: Key Largo Fish or a Ruthie Burger
Fresh Fish: Yellowtail with the Mango Salsa or Picatta sauce
Seafood: Key Lime Seafood (I can't say enough about this dish)
Steaks: Filet for sure or Steak Diane
Chicken: Bayou Pasta
Sides: Sweet Potato Fries
Dessert: Can't pass up the Key Lime Pie, but the Chocolate Cake is out of this world.
If you want a memorable Keys dining experience, do not miss Sundowner's. You will love this place and return time after time.
