I had already noted that Dove Creek Lodge had many good TA reviews, so when looking for a place to stay in Key Largo to break up our road trip from Miami to Key West, we were pleased to see that it was available on Hotwire and booked one night at approx £80.
It wasn't the easiest to find as we were looking across 3 lanes of traffic for the right access road (should have invested in the SatNav) but we eventurely got there and located reception (everything is on the 1st floor...parking on ground floor).
Two people were in reception (we arrived about 2pm) Brianna and another lady whoes name I did not take note of but she was very nice and gave us a complimentary upgrade to a suite. We were then shown to our room and given to basic information about lifts, breakfast, restaurants in the area and the kayaks, pool etc...
We were able to leave our car underthe building, keeping it cool and right by a lift which is handy if you have heavy bags. Parking is free.
The room had a spcaious seating area with a TV, a bathroom (no bath) and a bedroom with a large comfy bed, TV, posh coffee maker and a music centre with docking for MP3 or ipod (can't remember which) All rooms were very clean and painted in bright colours. Lots of lighting. Plenty of towels and toiletries and a good shower - no complaints! In fact we booked direct for a 2nd night as it was the only place we had seen on our travels through Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada where we had a restaurant right next door and a bar. We also wanted to stop and go on the glass bottomed boat and see the African Queen.
All the rooms appear to have a covered / mosquito proof balcony with chairs and a table for watching sun come up / go down. Very few insects on this trip - we both got a bite while we were in Key Largo but I was expecting it to be a lot worse, this is the first time I have been to Florida in December though.
Booking direct for a 2nd night was a bit complicated as Brianna was just about to go home and suggested we go on the internet to get the best price, we'd tried via Hotwire but it kept saying the hotel was full! She eventurly said she'd book it directly and we could pay at breakfast the next morning. It was only about £5 more so not really an issue.
Breakfast was a self service affair up on the big verandah over looking the harbour. The Pelicans were also hard at work getting their breakfast both mornings, which was fun to watch, they certainly gave us a great diving performance. You can eat inside as well, the room has books, magazines, tourist information and I think a TV as well. You just sit where you like really but it wasn't that busy when we were there so we didn't have any issues with lack of seating or food.
You get a 10 voucher for Snappers Restaurant which is just the other side of the grounds and is open for lunch and dinner. Good fish taco's.
Further round is the Turtle Club, a "locals" bar with a lively atmosphere, which does massive meals at a great price (Kirk behind the bar is lovely, made us feel welcome and stopped us ordering too much food) they also have Happy Hour here in the evening.
We spent a few hours by the pool one morning. Pool towels provided in room and sun loungers out by pool. There is small beach area with hammocks and seats.
We made use of one of the kayaks and went out for 90 minutes or so. We turned right out of the harbour, followed the shoreline and then right again up the first inlet. On our way back towards the ocean we were lucky enough to have a sea turtle swim right by us and under our kayak.... brilliant, I have never seen one outside an aquarium before, I was thrilled!
So, overall I really liked Dove Creek, not sure that I'd return to Key Largo again as it's more a diving and fishing place and I found it a bit sprawling. You definitely need a car here in my opinion, not much walking to be done.
