“Paradise in the Keys”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

We've just returned from a brief stay in Key Largo (only 3 nights at the DCL) and are still dreaming about it! The ocean view from the property was amazing. We found the staff to be responsive, the rooms and building clean, and the breakfast a nice change from typical hotel 'free breakfast'. We did have a noise problem through the night with an AC unit. Jamie promptly moved us to an upgraded unit the next day, no additional charge and her apologies. My husband needed a quiet place to make a conference call and they were wonderful to assist. The view from the upper level oceanfront room was simply beautiful. We walked to Snappers for several meals, each one was fantastic. The white chocolate Key Lime pie was a must! We would certainly consider a return visit.

Arriving at this hotel is like stepping into paradise. The location on this scenic little bay couldn't be better. The rooms are stunning and the fittings have a Keys feel with the rattan furniture, tall directors chairs, ceiling fans and box blinds. Tommy Bahamas toiletries in pumps over the bathtub were an added luxury. Outside were all the extra touches to make relaxation easy - exotic plants, heated pool, jacuzzi, a sanded area, a relaxation space with hammocks and swing seats and plenty of kayaks for guests to use whenever they wished.
Breakfast selections showed the same imagination. Granola, Devilled Eggs, Greek yogurt with berry fruits, fruit skewers, home made pastries and a wonderful Pumpkin and Cranberry Stack Cheesecake. Having breakfast on the terrace in the early morning, looking out over the calm water with pelicans and egrets for company, was so peaceful and pretty it was hard to drag yourself away to actually start the day.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floors have views over the tree line to the water.

We stayed here again this month for the 2nd time. We try to come down atleast once a year. Each time we have stayed it has been great. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and comfortable. We found that this time it seemed that things had been upgraded, which was nice. The beds were great!
Its such a relaxing place....
Love the fact that they have free use of their kyaks!
Look foward to our next stay with Dove Creek Lodge!

Room Tip: One of the suites on the top floor would give you the best view but regardless, you have a view with...

I had already noted that Dove Creek Lodge had many good TA reviews, so when looking for a place to stay in Key Largo to break up our road trip from Miami to Key West, we were pleased to see that it was available on Hotwire and booked one night at approx £80.

It wasn't the easiest to find as we were looking across 3 lanes of traffic for the right access road (should have invested in the SatNav) but we eventurely got there and located reception (everything is on the 1st floor...parking on ground floor).

Two people were in reception (we arrived about 2pm) Brianna and another lady whoes name I did not take note of but she was very nice and gave us a complimentary upgrade to a suite. We were then shown to our room and given to basic information about lifts, breakfast, restaurants in the area and the kayaks, pool etc...

We were able to leave our car underthe building, keeping it cool and right by a lift which is handy if you have heavy bags. Parking is free.

The room had a spcaious seating area with a TV, a bathroom (no bath) and a bedroom with a large comfy bed, TV, posh coffee maker and a music centre with docking for MP3 or ipod (can't remember which) All rooms were very clean and painted in bright colours. Lots of lighting. Plenty of towels and toiletries and a good shower - no complaints! In fact we booked direct for a 2nd night as it was the only place we had seen on our travels through Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada where we had a restaurant right next door and a bar. We also wanted to stop and go on the glass bottomed boat and see the African Queen.

All the rooms appear to have a covered / mosquito proof balcony with chairs and a table for watching sun come up / go down. Very few insects on this trip - we both got a bite while we were in Key Largo but I was expecting it to be a lot worse, this is the first time I have been to Florida in December though.

Booking direct for a 2nd night was a bit complicated as Brianna was just about to go home and suggested we go on the internet to get the best price, we'd tried via Hotwire but it kept saying the hotel was full! She eventurly said she'd book it directly and we could pay at breakfast the next morning. It was only about £5 more so not really an issue.

Breakfast was a self service affair up on the big verandah over looking the harbour. The Pelicans were also hard at work getting their breakfast both mornings, which was fun to watch, they certainly gave us a great diving performance. You can eat inside as well, the room has books, magazines, tourist information and I think a TV as well. You just sit where you like really but it wasn't that busy when we were there so we didn't have any issues with lack of seating or food.

You get a 10 voucher for Snappers Restaurant which is just the other side of the grounds and is open for lunch and dinner. Good fish taco's.

Further round is the Turtle Club, a "locals" bar with a lively atmosphere, which does massive meals at a great price (Kirk behind the bar is lovely, made us feel welcome and stopped us ordering too much food) they also have Happy Hour here in the evening.

We spent a few hours by the pool one morning. Pool towels provided in room and sun loungers out by pool. There is small beach area with hammocks and seats.

We made use of one of the kayaks and went out for 90 minutes or so. We turned right out of the harbour, followed the shoreline and then right again up the first inlet. On our way back towards the ocean we were lucky enough to have a sea turtle swim right by us and under our kayak.... brilliant, I have never seen one outside an aquarium before, I was thrilled!

So, overall I really liked Dove Creek, not sure that I'd return to Key Largo again as it's more a diving and fishing place and I found it a bit sprawling. You definitely need a car here in my opinion, not much walking to be done.

OK, before I start, I should realize that if everyone reads this then I'll probably have difficulty booking this hotel again in the future, because everyone will want to stay here. This hotel really is a GEM in the jungle of hotels and resorts in the Keys. You'll have trouble finding it because it's in a laid-back hidden location in the middle of nowhere on the Atlantic Ocean side at the lower end of Key Largo. As you approach the hotel you'll quickly realize you've found something different and better than the rest.
We checked-in on the Sunday afternoon before Christmas for our 3-day stay and Deb, who was on duty, greeted us in a charming fashion. She showed us our incredible, very clean and spacious room with a small balcony and explained the layout of the hotel to us.
There's a heated pool, a hot tub and kayaks (free) for the guests use along with hammocks and lounge chairs in the "pool garden". You're going to enjoy the lounge room where breakfast (extensive continental) is served. There's even a Keurig machine for your use to make coffee and tea any time you like. That's in addition to the "usual" coffee maker and fridg in your room. "Snappers Restaurant", right next door, was convenient and has some decent food.
All in all it remains to be said, that if someone wrote anything negative about this hotel it's because they were in the wrong spot, they definitely were NOT in the same Dove Creek Lodge as we were!!!

Room Tip: Hotel is built in the "stilt house" style often found in the Keys. All rooms are on the 2n...

After a bad stay at Sheraton Suites in Key West, I was so looking forward to our two day stay here. I booked this place based on TripAdvisor reviews. Apparently I have a different standard than those who gave glowing reviews. First of all at check in there was no one there for 10 minutes. All that was there was a rock with "Be right back" on it. Unfortunately I seen that rock a lot. They should at least have some type of system in place so people don't have to wait. There is only someone there from 7 - 7. On the day we checked in around 3:30 or 4, we were taken to our rooms and was told she (front desk person) was about to leave for the day and told me about an emergency number to call if needed. I feel like she was waiting for us so she could leave. The rooms we had were very small. It was all they had available when I booked. No dresser, a closet that contained a small refrigerator and safe. There was also a directors chair which I found to be useless. There was a flat screen tv in front of the bed with a desk under that. There was a small walkway between the desk and bed. The room showed wear from other visitors. They need to invest in some magic erasers to clean the scuff marks off the walls. The bathroom was not appealing. The tile strip above the towels rack was corroded with dirt, dust and hair. The shower curtain had mold on it - disgusting. I don't think anyone is checking on the cleaning. The shower looked dirty because if the poor grout job. The toilet didn't have a seat cover which was strange and it flushed slowly. They have Tommy Bahamas shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in dispensers in the shower. The towels were soft, but there was something red on one of them. I did not see any bed bugs as reported in an earlier review. The beds were the best thing about the place. I read reviews of people talking about the grounds. There is no beach and the little harbor was full of sea garbage. There was no way my kids were getting on the free kayaks in that water. The grounds could use some upkeep. If I'm paying a big price for a room I better get what I'm paying for, not here at all. They said they were booked, but I only seen a few people. The free breakfast was ok. Bagels, English muffins, fruit, boiled eggs, parfait, drinks. We were the only ones there at 7:30. The front desk person was sitting at the front and did not acknowledge us until she came into the breakfast area and turned the tv on. We got a hello. This place may have been good at one time. It most definitely has potential. Maybe Gordon Ramsey should do a Hotel Hell here.

Me and my husbands stay at dove creek lodge was wonderful. Debbie at the fronk desk was very nice and accommodating! She stayed late for us on Christmas Eve cause we were running late and needed to pay cash. Our room was a one bedroom suite and it was very clean and nice. They have kayaks for you to use for free and hammocks to lay in. The pool and hot tub were very nice and we were the only ones in them so it was very private. Would definitely come back again !
