“Beautiful, quiet beach resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2008

The Rock Reef Resort just south of Key Largo, Florida is our favorite vacation resort in the Upper Keys and we have stayed there on numerous occasions over the past twelve years. The Resort has many unique buildings such as beach front cottages, apartments, and efficiencies. Our favorite is one of the cottages on the beach of beautiful Florida Bay.

Amongst all of the buildings are many lovely, flowering bushes and trees and a very unusual Bonsai garden that must be seen to be appreciated.

This resort is for those that want to relax and enjoy the scenery. It is not a modern Hilton type resort with all of the modern amenities. Every room has a TV and a refrigerator. There is no pool, but there is the wonderful Florida Bay, and there is no restaurant on site. There are many excellent restaurants within a relatively short drive, and there is Ballyhoo's across the street where one can walk to have lunch or dinner. John Pennekamp park is just north of the resort and this is an excellent location for diving.

On our recent trip we learned that WiFi has been installed for those travelers that feel they must be in contact with work.

Key Largo: Rock Reef Resort: "Peaceful Get Away"

My wife and I just returned from 3 wonderful days at the Red Reef Resort. The resort is a wonderful place offering Old Florida charm, rest and relaxation. We stayed in one of the cottages right on the beach that was both spotless & well appointed . The staff is very polite, extreemly helpful and would go out of their way to make sure you felt at home. Sunsets from the porch of the cottage were breathtaking and the grounds are lush with native vegetion all in vibrant colorful bloom. There is also a very special bonsai garden all of which added to the quant atmosphere; and, if you feel location is important, then Rock Reef is certainly the place - they have docks for the boat, are close to some beautiful parks and some fine eateries along the way.

In fact, we enjoyed our stay so much we booked an additional stay over the upcoming Labor Day Weekend.

What a wonderful two weeks we had sitting in front of our cottage only 50 paces from the water and watching the sun set into the ocean each evening.

The staff was wonderful and very attentive. The cottage was rustic but contained all the ammenities one would need, (eg. cable TV)

Lots of tourist activites nearby.

  • Liked — Proximity to the water.
  • Disliked — Uncomfortable beds.

The Rock Reef is a unique and wonderful place to stay. It is privately owned and operated and as a result has the personal charm that you can't find in chain hotels. The beautiful gardens and spectacular sunsets over Florida Bay really create the feel getting away to the tropics. The staff is always helpful. The rooms are unique, with full kitchens and living rooms - lots of space. We do a lot of snorkeling off of the beach and see an amazing diversity of marine life. It's hard to beat having your morning coffee on the beach and seeing manatee and dolphins. I highly recommend the Rock Reef if you are looking for a beautiful place to get away ...

The staff is very friendly and helpful and the beach was very nice. The rooms are older but very large and clean, with plenty of closet and drawer space. Sufficient beach chairs, tables, and hammocks for all guests and the beach didn't seem crowded - even at sunset. We would certainly stay here again.

My wife and I had a wonderful 5 day stay at the Rock Reef Resort in early April. We chose Key Largo for the proximity to the reefs for snorkeling, but we had a great time on the grounds too. We ate at the table on the dock almost every evening to watch the sun set, and spent a lot of time in the hammocks amid the beautiful flowering plants and banzai trees. We used the beach at the Rock Reef for swimming and snorkel practice, where we saw fish, crabs, etc. The outdoor hot tub was perfect after a morning swim. We borrowed the peddle boat and drifted around the bay taking pictures to document our stay.
Our room was one of the smallest, cheapest rooms available, but had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay: A bed, a desk, a closet, a TV with cable, a small refrigerator, and a bathroom with a good size shower. I would recommend a stay at the Rock Reef to anyone who likes lazy days on the beach, napping in hammocks under coconut trees, and dining on the ocean front.

My husband and I stayed here at the beginning of April as the last stop on a trip to Miami and Key West and Key Largo. We stayed in 1 bedroom apartment (#5) that had a king bed for $190/night. The place was clean and well stocked. It had a kitchette (small oven/burners), fridge/freezer and microwave. They also provided cookware so you could make breakfast or dinner. There's a Publix supermarket about 5-10 min north of the place that you can buy food while you stay. There's also a mini-mart/gas station you can walk to in a few minutes.

The bedroom is separate from the living room so you have space to spread out. #5 is just to the right of the office and you can park your car right near the front door so you don't have to lug your stuff to far. There are ceiling fans in each room and A/C to cool the room down.

As other people have said, the hammocks are great and plenty of chairs for people to sit on the beach in. I agree that this is not a 'fancy' resort, but you could spend your whole time here and not be bored. You have beach and water to play in, paddleboat to take out, hammocks and jacuzzi to sit in. For $190/night in prime season, that's not bad. The only negative thing was we couldn't get wifi signal in our room (which was odd since we were so close to the office). But otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place for people who want to relax and have fun.

Its also not far from Pennekamp state park which was great place to visit (we rented a canoe there one day) but you can also rent snorkle gear or take a snorkle tour out to the reefs.
