We stayed here for 4 nights very recently. A point to remember is that Key Largo is not a premier resort community/location (like St. Barts or Hawaii or Capri.) So take "resort" with the grain of salt it deserves. Our room included the amenities of an efficiency kitchen and was "average." The sheets do not get changed every day, but the office provided us with beach towels so we did not have to pack our own. When we walked into the room one afternoon, some odd bug scampered under the bed (we never saw it again). The bathroom shower water gets supremely hot! (a good thing!) but the door is a little sliding number that makes noise. The walls are paper, paper thin, thin, thin (barely there), so we could hear the neighbors' every words!! and we had to tell one neighbor to stop shouting at the football players as they watched the playoffs game. On the other hand, for us, it was a chance to get away from the cold of the north, do absolutely nothing, watch a few sunsets, eat out or in as we chose, and get unlinked from e- and voice-mails. The front desk personnel were friendly, helped us printout our boarding passes the day we left, answered our questions politely, etc.
In short, if you want a resort, stay at the Marriott up the road or someplace else other than the Keys. If you don't mind a bit of "roughing it" this will be fine. It's only a little more than an hour's drive from the Miami airport, there is not much to do, and for us Yankee's it is warm.

“A favorite spot in the Florida Keys”

Rock Reef Resort was a very nice place to stay and pleasant owners. Next to great places to eat and lots of shopping and beach walking areas. Not real fancy but pleasant and enjoyable.
State Parks nearby and a short drive to Key West without all the
crowds.
The water was crystal clear and had lots of wildlife swimming about. Warm tropical breezes all day and a comforatable hammock to rest in.
It was just like the photos on the web site.

We will definately go back!

“Too Much Money for a Terrible Room and Rude Staff”

Upon making my reservation I found that Chris was simply a pleasure to deal with on the telephone and upon our arrival in person as well. That is where the pleasure ended.

The room that we stayed in smelled like it had not been opened up in several months (very musty), had ants everywhere, the extra blankets in the closets were literally stuck to the shelves, the electric outlet at the sink did not work, bathtub didn't drain and the water went from freezing to scalding in the shower without touching the faucet.

The nightmare just got worse...Our first night there we had only paid for two of us however two more friends had arrived a day early (after office hours). Upon our arrival we had spoken to the people staying in the room next to us and they were very friendly. When we arrived back from dinner they were yelling to us down in the parking lot (still just being friendly) where have you guys been? Of course we spoke to them once we got back upstairs and yes we may have been a little loud.

We had reserved a snorkel trip for the next day and upon our return to the hotel I was summoned to the office due to the extra people that had arrived and I was told that I owed more money because housekeeping claimed that we had used all four beds in the room. (In fact, we did not use all four beds, we pulled down the bedspreads and sprayed Febreeze on everything to get rid of the smell.) We were also told that some of the other guests had complained about the noise from my room (no mention of the neighbors noise) and when I mentioned that it was not just my room that was loud the woman at the counter looked at me as if she didn't believe a word that I said. When I told her about the shower I was told that I should have notified them before I left for my snorkel trip (office was not opened when we left) and then she said you should have left us a note so we could have repaired the problem!! (How many housekeepers do you know read a note from you and if they do what else do they read in your room?)

When checking out thankfully I only had to deal with Chris and as before she was a pleasure to deal with.

I stay in Key Largo at least once a year and I can honestly say that I have stayed in a lot better place for less money with an absolutely wonderful staff called Stone Ledge. They will be getting my business from now on!!

Management Response

We would like to thank you for the kind words that you had for Chris. She is a very valued employee and has been with us for a long time. However, sometimes, we have to be firm with guests that may be having fun at someone else’s expense. That doesn’t mean that we were rude!

A note was left for you on your door, (you were not “summoned”) to please come to the office. We had two issues to address. One, our housekeepers noted that more beds were used than the number of guests that had been paid for, for that night, and two, there had also been two complaints about the noise outside your room until 2 AM. Monroe County has a noise ordinance that states “Quiet time is at 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 PM Friday and Saturday nights. It is the manager’s job to address these problems so that all guests will have the right to a peaceful nights sleep.

When we asked if some of your guests had arrived earlier than expected, or if there were additional guests that had joined your party, it was to make sure there were adequate towels and supplies for your entire party. When you came down to the office, between 6:30 and 7 PM, we addressed our concerns; you paid for the two extra people for the previous night and then you told us about the shower. That was the only problem you mentioned until you wrote to “TRIPADVISOR.”

At that point, we asked you why you didn’t inform us about the shower earlier in the day. The office is opened from 9 AM to 9 PM daily. A message on the hotel phone system, a note on the front door, a cell phone call back to the office or a note to the housekeepers would have done the trick. A shower valve can fail. It is an unforeseen problem. For these units we must turn the water off to the entire building (11 Units) to change the valve. This is easier done when people are gone during the day, rather than trying to do it when people are in their rooms getting ready for dinner. The water problem would have been rectified the day it happened if you had called our attention to it in the morning. It is always wiser to make repairs during the day just in case you run into difficulty and need additional parts. The prior guest (day before you arrived) didn’t complain.

We are AAA rated and have been for nearly eighteen years. We are subject to unannounced inspections at any time. Our rooms are never closed up for any period of time when unoccupied. We take all concerns very seriously and try to make your stay a pleasant one. The room that you stayed in was occupied before your arrival and has been occupied since your departure. There have been no complaints concerning a plugged drain, a non working receptacle, or ants in that room. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us.

“Superb location”

We found this property by chance and were delighted by the location, and the accommodation.

We had the largest room with the largest bed we have ever stayed in! I swear we needed our passports to cross over into the other side of the bed.

The sunsets from the dock were captivating and to watch them from the hammocks was wonderful.

During our stay on Key Largo we dived with Silent World dive centre and found them to be very accommodating, friendly and professional.
