After reading the reviews, my husband and I decided to ignore the front desk local who told us not to bother with The Fish House. I wish we'd listened to her. Drinks were watered down, service was terrible and we couldn't even eat the fish. We ordered grouper, pan seared with lemon and sherry... which was supposed to be their "specialty". We paid $24 for a piece of grouper fried in used lard with no taste of sherry or lemon. We got a half cup of cole slaw, small corn-on-the-cob and 2 boiled potatoes to go with it. No bread - just crackers. After taking our order, we didn't see our waiter until he dropped the check. When the hostess asked us how everything was on our way out - we told her it was possibly the worst meal we've ever had in Florida. She replied "Oh Gawd" and walked away. Next time, we'll go to Hobo's or maybe make the drive to Alabama Jack's!

Next door to the Fish House, owned by the same folks, is Fish House Encore. This is a MUST visit if you are looking for great food, atmosphere and service in Key Largo. While they are not located on the water, they make up for it in all other aspects. The menu is pretty unique for the Keys in that very few items are deep fried. They offer a wonderful preparation of stacked green tomato and mozarella that is to die for. Both seafood and steaks are offered. Portions are generous and the wait staff is eager to substitute a green vegetable for a starch with no charge.

I love to sit outside in the garden for an intimate dinner. My boyfriend and I like to order a few appetizers and make a meal of them. We have never been rushed and usually the waiter asks if we are ready for our next round instead of just bringing them.

Prices, for the Keys, are expensive. New Yorkers will wonder why this restaurant is so reasonable! I dine here somewhat frequently and have been impressed each time! For visitors, I must recommend making reservations as weekends the small restaurant can have an hour wait.

We stopped at The Fish House on our way back to Ft. Lauderdale from Key West last December. It's got an old-Florida vibe to it, and as Florida natives, we really appreciated that it wasn't super-touristy. My husband was very happy with his steak, my sister loved her lobster tail, and I was thrilled with my stone crab claws. Our waiter was very attentive and had a great sense of humor. We had a great time and we're looking forward to coming back next time we go to the Keys.

Our first day, driving from the Fort Lauderdale Airport to Islamorada, my husband and I stopped randomly at the Fish House. What a way to start the vacation! We both had catch of the day, in this case Snapper, prepared differently for both of us - mine with garlic and oil, his blackened. I think the thing that made it so great was the impeccable freshness of the fish, prepared simply. It was so fresh it sparkled. I don't know how else to describe it. Delicious, and memorable. And although we had excellent fish during the rest of our trip, this was the best. Fish House is also a fish market, they get whole fish from the fishing boats and filet it themselves daily. Funky keys atmosphere (crooked nautical "stuff" and pictures scattered on every wall surface, kind of thrown up there in a charming way). Anyway, don't miss it if you are in the area.
