Ok, the infamous Fish House! We went there on our last night of vaca, and decided to give this place a try seeing as how most of the reviews were very good. This was probably the best dinner that we had in the Keys, tho we were only there for 4 nights. Someone had mentioned that it was over-priced, and yes it is over-priced... but ALL meals that we had while in the Keys were over-priced. I was there with my Mom and my 10 year old daughter. Our bill was $73 for the 3 of us which included soft-drinks and 1 beer... so yeah, that was a little steep. But as I said, all places in the Keys are over-priced. Now, about the title here... yes, the meal was good... just maybe as good as it gets in the Keys! But coming from New England, I can easily get a better seafood meal here where I live for close to 1/2 the price! So sure, if your coming from a place in the US where fresh seafood is limited then sure, you will enjoy dining at the Fish House. I tried the grouper at Coconuts and it was pretty good. Tried the dophine (mahi mahi) (sp) while in Key West and that was just OK (more the flavor of the fish then how it was prepared made this dish just OK). I had the grouper again at the Fish House, Hemmingway style and granted it was good!... but replace the grouper with a fresh fillet of Haddock and it would have been VERY good! My Mom had the stuffed jumbo shrimp with the crab stuffing and again, it was good... and yes, I did try some of hers. The shrimp was good, but not quite as crisps and clean and flavorfull as what I would find around here in NE. The crab stuffing again was good, but can find better around these parts and again, for close to 1/2 the price of our meal. The portions?... well the resturants boast about how good their portions are, and some reviews on here as well stated the portions were good. But for me, I am 6 foot and 190 lbs. I was able to finish my grouper dish, along with the fries and 1/2 cob of over-cooked corn, and had 1 of my Mom's jumbo shrimped and finished my meal easily!.. probably with room to spare! If a facility is going to boast about their portions, then I want to be "stuffed" if I am able to finish one of their dishes! So anyway, my review is basically good for this place. But I also enjoyed the grouper that I had over at cocunuts too. It was prepared differently then at the Fish House, but still it was a decent meal.. and yeah, still paid over $20 for the entree at coconuts... but then again, I paid over $20 for the dolphine entree in Key west as well! So from what I can tell, basically everything is over-priced in the Keys.. from the glass bottom boats, to the snorkling, to the accomodations, to the meals. The discounted prices I was able to get staying at the Ramada Inn on the marina in Key Largo was the ONLY thing we felt where we had gotten what we had paid for! Everything else in the Keys is a lot of hype, alot of doe, and not much in return.... Anyway, if anyone has any questions, feel free to drop me a line. Good luck all!!
