During my recent 5-night stay in Key Largo, I ate dinner two evenings at the smaller & older Mrs. Mac's location. As a solo diner, I ate at the compact bar, but still got great personable service. Both nights, "Loki" was on duty at the bar, and he did an amazing job greeting diners and making everyone feel welcomed, and he's darned sharp at talking up their food. For an appetizer I ordered their Coconut Shrimp, which came with a sweet & mildly spicy sauce and wedges of lime, and that was the best Coconut Shrimp I've ever had. Not being familiar with Hogfish, one of their fresh catch of the day selections, Loki described the taste and texture, and sold me on giving it a try. It was a delicious trial of a new-to-me fish. The second evening I ate there, I had their crab cakes, two nice cakes with good flavor and a good amount of crab. The two nights I ate there, I kept hearing Loki describe their key lime pie but didn't have any dessert. So on a third night I actually went and got a piece of key lime pie to-go, and I'm glad I did. I generally skip key lime pie because it is overly sweet, but the Mrs. Mac's key lime was a real treat with good lime flavor but the sweetness was not overdone and it was topped with a bit of whipped cream. If you're in Key Largo, this is a great place to eat. The menu offers quite a variety and a range of prices. And the license plate decor and decorations are kind'a fun too.
