“Laid back Largo!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We stayed at Azul for 6 nights and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is situated off the main road but there is very little traffic noise. The suite we had was Aquamarina and it was lovely, the air con was good and the kitchen had a fridge, microwave and dishwasher. It was extremely clean with a large bedroom and sitting room with large windows to enjoy the view over the bay. The bathroom was smallish but the shower was very efficient. The maid attended every day to clean etc. Dominic, the owner made us feel very welcome without being intrusive. Azul has a private dock and we snorkelled here and saw various fish and a barracuda. The gardens are well kept and the house itself is well located for bars and restaurants. It was lovely just to sit under the Tiki hut having a glass of wine and enjoying the view and the sunset. The Tiki huts are lit with fairy lights at night. We walked to The Big Chill for drinks and dinner and the shrimp there were terrific. Dominic offers various trips and we took his recommendation for the EcoTour - this was with Capt Mike and it was 4 hours on his really fast flat boat- he was very knowledgeable about the area and we saw all sorts of birds, insects etc- he tried to find a manatee but they seemed to be in hiding. Ironically when we returned from our trip a fellow guest said there had been four manatee swimming around the dock! Anyway, we would have no hesitation in recommending Azul and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Aquamarina suite was a good size with a super view of the bay

We stayed at Azul del Mar for the first three nights of our trip down the Keys. I wish we had spent the entire time there, as it was by far the nicest, most relaxing part of our trip.

Our flight was delayed due to storms, so we were late arriving in Key Largo. Even though the reception office had closed, our room was ready and waiting - cool and inviting after a long day of travel. There was even a map with hand-written suggestions for where we might enjoy a late supper.

The next morning, Dominic took us out a few miles off shore in his boat. Dropped us off in a canoe with a map and instructions. We had a very nice secluded paddle (didn't see anyone for more than 2 hours) before arriving at our pickup point for the ride back to land. We wanted to grill some fresh fish, so Dominic recommended a great local seafood market. Best shrimp I've ever tasted by far. If you go, skip the restaurants, pick up some fresh local shrimp, and toss them on the barbecue.

The property is only about a half hour drive from the entrance to Everglades National Park, so based on advice from Dominic we spent the better part of our second day on a driving tour. That evening, another private boat cruise with Captian Dominic. Saw the best sunset ever. I can't believe no other guests signed up for either boat tour while we were there. Definitely worth the price, and then some.

Before we left for Key West, our next destination, Dominic gave us advice on where to stop along the drive and what to do/see in Key West. Also warned us about some road construction in Key West on the main entrance road. This was a life-saver - the route shown on Google Maps was a real mess but based on Dominic's suggestion we took a different route and were just fine.

The rooms are quiet, spacious, and comfortable, but the best part of Azul del Mar is the owner and his staff. Their willingness to share some of their extensive local knowledge really made the trip. I will definitely book a room here next time I'm in the area, and highly recommend it to all my friends.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Deluxe Sea View Celeste on the second floor. Not a great view of the sea, but reall...

We stayed at Azul del Mar as a stopping point on our way to Key West. What a lovely, relaxing gem of a hotel this was! Make sure to watch the sunset from one of the tiki huts- so much better and far more relaxing than Key West. I would have liked to stay another night here.
We stayed in Orchidea which has a comfy king bed. You cannot watch TV from bed if that's your thing but our friends could from their room- I don't remember the room name but it was exactly opposite ours and adjacent to the butterfly garden.
Aside from the sunset, I think my favorite thing about Azul was the staff. We only met 2- the groundskeeper and Dominic. Both went out of their way to be accommodating and acquaint us with the area.

We visited in June when the weather was damp and grey. We had a ground floor suite which was very well equipped and looked out over the Gulf. Ok, the TV was old, but there was a plentiful supply of dvds - and who wants to watch TV when you're in the Keys?
There's a tiny beach with plenty of sunloungers and two Tiki huts [which were useful when it rained!]. It's convenient for restaurants and bars, and the owner and his staff will provide lots of useful information about the area. He also runs private boat tours.
We'd always before stayed at the Hilton, until the trip when we watched the rat scurry across the dining terrace, over one of the tables and head off towards the kitchen! Never again. Azul del Mar was a much better introduction to the Keys - completely laid back and relaxing.

Room Tip: Worth paying a bit extra to look out over the Gulf.

We stayed at Azul Del Mar in May 2013 for 3 nights and had the perfect start to our holiday in the Florida Keys. We stayed in the Palma garden room which was the only room available at the time and whilst we would have preferred a sea view room, we were not disappointed at all with this room which more than met our expectations.
All staff were extremely approachable and helpful with local recommendations and we met Dom the owner on the first morning for our Kayak trip who was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. After our kayak trip he even took us for a bonus boat ride to a tiki bar up the coast whilst he refuelled his boat.
One evening we joined Dom and another couple for the sunset cruise which was a perfect way to complete our time here as we saw a great deal of wildlife with a beautiful sunset.
We will definietly return to this hotel and in fact are already planning our next holiday dates which will include another visit, possibly for a longer stay.

We loved this hotel and wished we could have stayed longer than our 1 night trip.

Despite being off the main road the hotel was relaxing and calming with not much going on and no one to both you.

Check in is abit later than we would have like when stayed for 1 night but when we arrived everything was ready and we managed to get a couple of hours on the sun loungers outside before watching a fab sunset from the end of the small jetty. After the chaos of sunsets in Key West this felt more personal and enjoyable.

We walked up to the nearby Big Chillis (?? think this was the name). It had great food and was convenient to the hotel.

The room we stayed in was Orchidea. Perfect sized for 2 and with a lovely kitchen if we needed to use. It only had a shower (perfect for us) but I know some do like baths. The bed was huge and really comfy. We also borrowed a DVD from reception which was a nice touch. The rooms had lots of nice little touches - the liquid hand soap (smelled lovely) and the very thick kitchen roll.

We loved our stay and if were ever in the area would return. My only observation after reading lots of reviews was that the grounds were smaller than I expected. Didn’t matter as we didn’t see anybody else and had it all to ourselves however if all 6 rooms were occupied and wanting to use the small beach area at the same time it would be crowded.

This hotel is a good base for exploring the lower keys or just relaxing for a couple of days. Most restaurants and bars a drive away, only a couple within walking distance.
