“Florida Keys Budget Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We tent camped with our 4 kids (15,13,10,7) for 2 nights at the Key Largo Kampground. The staff was very helpful and made sure we had a larger site in order to fit our 2 tents. Our site (13) had electric (handy for charging electronics), one of the communal sinks, a charcoal grill, a picnic table, and room to park our minivan. The site was shady and there was a nice breeze the entire time we were there. The sites are right next to each other but from what I understand that's pretty common for tent camping in the Keys. The only 'bad' thing about our site was the street light. It wasn't super bright but if you wake up in the middle of the night you might think the sun is starting to rise. ;)

The bathhouse by the main office is older but was very clean. There is a wifi hot spot with electrical outlets if you need/want it behind the main office. The pool was closed the day we arrived because it needed a thorough cleaning (chlorine shock?) due to some late night revelers. We were gone the next 2 days so did not get a chance to use it but it looked nice. There's a playground for the younger kids. We checked out the beach closest to the canal. The kids weren't too keen on swimming because of the grass but it looked like a nice place to take kayaks.

Overall, the campground was nice and the price was budget friendly. Everyone we met was super nice and offered suggestions on where to go/what to see with the kids. I greatly appreciated the quietness at night and how safe the area felt. If we head back down to Key Largo for another vacation, we will definitely stay here again!

This was not the typical campground that we were expecting. It is really a community of permanent home sites (Condo Park) with several sites that are rentable for Class A, Class B or C RV's and a few primitive camp sites. Not knowing what this meant, we made reservations and regretted it at first!! If you do consider staying, be sure to ask about the cancellation policy, they charge you if you try to cancel. We weren't informed about the policy until it was too late. When we asked, we were told they require 60 days notification. And, if you do make a reservation with a deposit and cancel, they will keep it. They do have sites on the water (canals) which are nice. We did use our Kayak around the many canals and navigable channel. We put the Kayak in from our campsite making it easier. They do not offer any type of discounts, i.e., Good Sam, Vets, etc., and the rates are rather high. To watch TV, you have to get a box from their office (with a $40.00 security deposit) and then jury rig it into your RV. The box only operates 1 TV. WI-FI is only available behind the office, their Hot Spot. The roadways are very tight making it a challenge to navigate to a site with a large RV. Many of the property owners have boats parked at their site so you have to beware while driving to and from your site. There is very good access to the water on Card Sound and a nice beach to launch a canoe, kayak, or just do some swimming. The Condo Park is conveniently located to many stores nearby; some within a good walking distance. They do have may rules and are diligent about enforcing them; which helps keep the park clean, well maintained, and very quiet. There is a boat launching ramp, playground area for kids, nice sized swimming pool, a clubhouse for activities, and just a friendly environment. We did enjoy our stay.

We take my little kids every spring break...great family campground. We always meet great people from all over. We always pay the extra and get a water front site. Worth it . You won't be disappointed in your stay.

Great old Florida atmosphere, not just a cement parking lot. The staff was friendly, thorough and courteous. The common areas were clean and well maintained with a nice little beach park. Convenient access to all needs, so if you have a bike, you won't need your car.

We ended up here because another place we had booked was terrible. The price was very reasonable and we were happy to stay here for a night and take advantage of the amenities (washers/dryers, showers). The tent sites (actually, all sites) are very small and close together. However, the campground seemed to be strict with its noise rules and campers we came in contact with were friendly and considerate. Staff was also helpful, available to answer questions about the area, and were around keeping an eye on things. We had no worries about letting our 13-year old daughter walk around at night by herself. We took an early morning sunrise stroll and met some wonderful long-term campers.

My sister and I stayed here for a week in March and we absolutely loved it here! If you're into camping and are looking for a place that gives you that laid-back island vibe, then you need to stay here.

The majority of the sites are occupied by RVs and permanent trailers. There are a few dedicated sites for tents, which is what my sister and I did. Even though it's not a typical park-like setting, they've really worked to make each site feel cozy in its own way. No, the sites are not very large, but they're big enough. With the amount of time you're likely to spend at the beach or pool, you don't need a ton of room anyway. There are a lot of plants and trees throughout the property that really give each site a unique feel.

There are a lot of restaurants and beach bars nearby, so you'll never go hungry. I highly recommend Bayside Grille which is very close to this campground. This place was recommended to us by other people staying here and for good reason. The sunset is spectacular and their food is wonderful!

There are two beaches which, I admit, were fairly disappointing due to the amount of sea grass in the water. That's not really the fault of the campground, though. Be careful if you do head into the water as there are a LOT of jellyfish. I was stung a couple times, but neither one was serious in the least. Just wear water shoes or use a flotation device and you should be fine. The other small issue is that there are no restrooms near either beach. Again, not a huge deal; it just means you have to walk a few extra steps to get to one.

The pool area is quite lovely. There are a lot of chairs available and the water is very nice. There's also a playground right there and a few games that you can play. This seems to be the central hub of the campground.

The restrooms are maintained on a very regular basis. They were always neat and clean while we were there despite the fact that there were a lot of spring-breakers around drinking heavily. There's also a maintenance team that works very hard to keep the grounds clean. They come by each campsite once a day to pick up garbage from each site individually. They're also very vigilant with keeping common areas neat and tidy. My sister and I were both very impressed with this.

One thing I really appreciated is that they offer a lot of activities and events throughout the week. While we were there, they had 2 bingo nights (which seems to happen every week) and a welcome breakfast with free donuts and coffee at the adult clubhouse on morning (also a weekly event). There are a lot of opportunities to meet new people which is great if you're planning to stay there for a longer period of time.

The only downsides, really, were things that are out of the campground's control. The first morning we were rudely awakened by a rooster that sounded like he was cawing right next to our tents. We were soon informed that roosters are prevalent in the Keys and they run wild everywhere there. Luckily, that was the only morning that was a real issue for us. Also, there was a garbage truck a couple of mornings later that went through the neighborhood right behind the campground. That would've normally been fine, except it came through around 5AM. Again, that's something that's beyond the campground's control, so I can't fault them for it.

Lastly, I should also mention the raccoons. This seems to be the other prevalent problem in the Keys. The raccoons are persistent and shameless. If you happen to leave any morsel of garbage out on your site after the sun sets, they can and will come by and steal it. As long as you're responsible with your garbage and put it in your car or take it to a trash bin, then they'll leave you alone. Occasionally, you'll hear them fighting with one another and it can get a little loud.

I will definitely be back to this campground as soon as I can get down to the Keys again! This is exactly the type of vibe I was expecting when I imagined what the Keys were like. The weather was pretty much perfect the entire week we were there. I'm not sure if that's the norm, but from what I've heard, it's usually quite sunny and hot.

Overall, if you're looking for a getaway with a tropical island feel, you need to visit the Keys. And if you're into camping, you need to stay at Key Largo Kampground!

The tent sites are right on top of each other. There was not to many families. It was a place more for retirees. The people were nice and helpful. The tent site I stayed at was very noisy throughout the night and smelled like sewage of some sort. It was hard to get some sleep even after a long day. The beach was not what I expected either.
