“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

From clean rooms to a friendly staff, this place was wonderful. The fresh-baked scones and coffee or tea in the mornings was a real treat. The grounds are beautiful, with several areas to sit quietly and enjoy the surroundings. If you rent one of the queen rooms, be prepared for a minimalist existence without a closet to hang your clothes, no luggage rack, (we ended up leaving our suitcases in the car) one chair. We were ready and adaptable, but be prepared. If you stay more a few days, consider larger accommodations and there is something for everyone here. Don't miss the evening sunsets on the resort's dock.

Room Tip: Consider a queen room for a short stay, but larger room for an extended stay.

I got married at Bay Harbor Lodge on 1/11/14 and the experiance couldn't have been better. We rented out the whole resort for three days, invited some close friends and family and took over for the weekend. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were nice, and the resort itself was beautiful.

Room Tip: Pay the extra money and get a cottage. Big rooms, huge kitchens, plenty of bathroom space. But they...

What a lovely place, very friendly and peaceful. Great place to relax and watch the pelicans. We loved the homemade scones, all flavours were delicious especially Key Lime and Coconut. Would not hesitate to recommend.
Will be back.

Room Tip: The ones near the dock are delightful

Very tiny room, barely enough room to move around for 2 people. No suitcase stand.
Shower only, freestanding sink, no space for hairbrush, etc.
Waiting for hot water was very, very long.
Well off Highway 1, so very quiet, although the noise between rooms was annoying.
Minimal breakfast of home made scones and coffee or cocoa.
Did have kayaks and paddle boats but the coast was flat as a board and
fully developed, so what was the point?
Way, way overpriced at $118, better price choices in the area.

Room Tip: You get what they give you in a sequence of double or triple "cabins"

My husband and I stayed in Cottage #3 for 4 nights over the long Thanksgiving weekend. We loved every minute of it!

CHECK-IN
John was friendly and helpful at check-in, and several times during our stay. Right after check-in, we found that 3 of our lamps had burned out bulbs. Yes, that was odd, but John promptly provided new light bulbs to switch out. I had several questions about local eateries and things to do, and John was really helpful with ideas and sharing his own first-hand feedback.

THE GROUNDS
Each cottage was adorned with a holiday wreath on the outside, but since it was a fairly windy weekend, ours kept blowing down. We moved it to the inside of the door instead, which worked nicely and enabled us to enjoy the decoration while relaxing in the living room and looking out at the water.

Every morning, scones and coffee were available at the office. My husband normally doesn’t like scones because he finds them too dry for his tastes, but he loved these, as did I! They are made locally, and offered in a variety of flavors – Key Lime, Chocolate Chip, Coconut – I know where were more flavors that I’m just not remembering.

Free WiFi was available with a code. The signal was strong both in our cottage and also while sitting outside in the chaise lounges by the water. This is a big plus for us as my husband is a travel agent and chooses to stay connected 7 days per week.

THE COTTAGES
Our cottage (#3) was the closest cottage to the beach making for a serene morning wake-up and easy evening stroll to wind down. When you walk out the front door, you’re there, right at the waterfront, in the middle of the resort near the dock.

Cottage #4 is attached to #3 but is set back a bit, and has a view of the water, but not a full 180 degree view. We never heard a peep out of our neighbors in Cottage #4 until the very last night. It sounded like they were packing their luggage because we kept hearing clothes hangers bang against the wall like they were flinging their clothes off the hangers and just letting them swing. This happened several times late at night and again early in the morning as we slept in. Other than that, we heard nothing from them, so it appears the two cottages are sound-insulated nicely.

Our cottage was stocked with everything we needed to cook in our full kitchen. We only cooked one night, but we had ample supplies and space to do so. The kitchen was updated and clean, but every now and then we’d see a tiny little ant (or some kind of itsy bug) walking on the kitchen counter. After we made an effort not to leave any open food on the counter, we were bug-free.

The bedroom was clean and provided closet and drawer space for clothes, but I must say that the TV was uber small. We pulled the TV forward on the dresser since it was so tiny. The BEST part of the bedroom was the memory foam mattress! Yes, they are in the midst of upgrading all of the beds to memory foam for a fantastic night’s sleep! The bathroom was also on the small side, but there is a large window ledge where I was able to store all of our bathroom supplies with ease. Beach towels were also provided in the bathroom, but we brought our own, and didn’t use the ones provided by Bay Harbor. Daily housekeeping service was also provided – don’t forget to tip at the end of your stay!

The living room was really my favorite spot to hang out. We re-arranged the furniture slightly (moved a chair) so we had NO obstruction from the couch to the view of the water right outside our cottage. It was here that I was gazing one day when I saw fins swimming along the water, and ran outside to watch a dolphin (they said her name is Abby) swimming around right there. Very cool sighting!

We’ve stayed at many beach cottages around Florida, and I’ve loved them all, but this one is probably my #1 favorite for location to the water, the beauty of the grounds, and the calm and relaxing nature of Bay Harbor Lodge and Key Largo in general. We will book Cottage #3 again in a heartbeat, but an alternative for close proximity to the water is #2, the cottage across the way. The view of the water from there is partially obstructed by a fence on the side of the property, but it’s still a private cottage that looks directly out to the waterfront. Cottages #1 (attached to #2 but set back) and #4 are good alternatives if you want to be close to the water, but #3 and #2 are waterfront.

Don’t think about this place, just book it!

Room Tip: Cottages #2 and #3 are the closest to the water. I'd book #3 again in a heartbeat. The view of...

Wish we had more than a night. All staff were very helpful including dinner options. Room 16 recently up graded and very nice. Kitchenette and nice bathroom.
Located on the waters edge, within a few minutes of arrival I was in a free kayak. Top tip listen for the breathing, I was soon drifting about and watching manatees feed and swim, such a privileged.
Stay here but make sure you have time to enjoy all Key Largo has to offer.

We took a break from Orlando and drove down here. Having been disappointed by our Orlando hotel we were initially quite anxious about what to expect but we didn't need to worry. The lodge is situated in a beautiful location with breathtaking views. The accommodation is fantastic-very well equipped suites with all mod-cons needed and very clean. Staff were very friendly and we enjoyed making the most of the facilities;there are kayaks and paddle- boats free for use by guests.
Would love to go back..highly recommended.
