“Dated but convenient.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

First...I am a repeat customer. I like this place only because I can walk from the hotel room to the dive boat quickly, plus they give a 20%discount through the dive shop (scuba-do). That being said...this is an average hotel for the keys. No frills. Small bath towels, decent amount of parking. Bath and Body Works shampoo, soap,etc..pool not crowded. Free breakfast (cereal, oatmeal, bagels, sweet rolls, muffins, juice, milk). Off the highway, and on a waterway so there are boats to watch. No carpeting but as a diver with wet gear, that is fine with me. Wish there was a balcony to let gear dry outside. Quiet. Decor is dated. On site restaurant has closed down. :( Will I stay here again? Yes, if I come diving in Key Largo again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra $20 and get a marina view room.

After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit hesitant to stay at Marina del Mar. On our drive down thru Key Largo I noticed that many of the hotels look relatively similar: they have a 70's vibe and despite a few more modern hotels, everything seems a bit dated. That being said, when we pulled up to Marina del Mar, I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful views of the (of course) of the marina.

We went into the front lobby and Jeanette (front desk person) helped us with our check in. She also gave us a few bags of complimentary popcorn. We had a pretty quick check-in and then proceeded to go to our room.

We were hoping for a marina view, but since we booked this hotel the day before and they were completely booked, we were OK with the room we received. We walked in and it smelled clean. We had two double beds, tv, shower, etc.

Was this the most modern room I've ever stayed in? No, but it's what I expected. The room was clean, and relatively spacious. We really didn't need anything huge or fancy since we were staying here for a dive weekend and anticipated moving rooms the following day, since our friend made a reservation for our group for the next day.

We slept comfortably the first night. We promptly checked out the next morning after our complimentary breakfast (don't expect anything huge, but it's sufficient: coffee, pastries, bagels, cereal, juice, oatmeal). The best feature about breakfast is enjoying it on the patio facing the marina.

A few hours later (when our group arrived), we asked if we could check-in early. Jeanette said they were completely booked and the two rooms for our group that we reserved weren't clean yet, but she did see if they had a room available that we could have if we didn't want the two rooms. She gave us the key and suggested we check it out before we committed. We walked into the room (which was on the top level of the lobby). There was a full kitchen, two balconies, two bedrooms (one master with a king, one with two twin beds, one pullout murphy bed in the front room), two bathrooms, and a kitchen table. The room had a fantastic view of the marina and the balcony/porch was a great feature. Since we'd be diving in a few hours and didn't want to leave all our luggage in cars, we decided to take the room Jeanette offered us.

The room worked out well, but I will worn others, it was a Saturday night, the pool was packed and you could everything until around 10 PM (loud people/kids). So if you're not a fan of noise, you may not want to stay in this room. If you want to stay in a room with fantastic views, then try to get the top level room in the same complex as the lobby.

We didn't use the pool, but it seemed fine and nicely maintained.

All in all, I'd stay here again. It's close to most bars and restaurants, the view of the marina is beautiful.

Tip: Bring bug spray. No-see-ums are out in droves!

The hotel is overall old and not very clean. The room was pretty spacious but the bathroom was awful. The pool is pretty big but not very welcoming.
We had complimentary breakfast but decided not to taste it as it was looking very bad.

In our last minute vacations we were left with one night without room in the hotel we were staying (it was spring break), so we didn't have other choice than go with MDM even when the price was way too expensive (double than the other hotel). We thought that it will be our day of luxury =), … Wrong!! =(.
The room was too weird to start. It was a one big cubicle containing one sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, two twin beds inside the wall, a round table, four chairs and the kitchen in one of the walls, all in one cubicle. You need to pull the beds out of the wall. The shower and toilet were in a very tiny space. It was a corner room and what we thought was "our" big balcony facing the canal, we quick realized was a public corridor where people come and go to the their rooms. So everybody could see inside our "room" when passing by, because the wall separating the public corridor and our room was a set of glass sliding doors, so, almost no privacy. I said almost, because what made our "room" private was a curtain that we kept close. Two chairs in the balcony/public corridor invited people to sit and chat while relaxing and enjoying a cigarette …. on our faces!!. Although at the first second I was excited by the view of the canal from our balcony (before I realized it was a public corridor), I can tell you that I couldn't enjoy it because most of the time I was uncomfortable when people was passing by or nervously expecting the next person to pull a chair and light a cigarette.
The front desk service is also very bad, the person at the time we checked in was super rude.
The grounds of the hotel are very nice but other than that it was a big disappointment.
I wasn't expecting that level of service or room when I was paying around 200 dollars per night. I don't recommend that hotel.

Room Tip: Ask, in details, about the beds, about the balcony or canal view, about the noise.

Dear Guest,

I reviewed your comments regarding your stay with us at Marina del Mar. We do take all comments seriously and appreciate the feedback we receive to improve our service. I apologize for the inconvenience regarding your expectations of room accommodations. Please note the hotel does have private baloncies available with two or three bedroom suites as the accommodation you had was for a studio suite with two queen size pull down murphy beds. The prices over spring break are comparable with other hotels in the area.

I am pleased that you enjoyed the hotel grounds. We hope to see you again very soon for your next visit to Key Largo.

Sincerely,
Diane,Hotel Management

We stayed at the Marian Del Mar as part of a diving package. We had a room on the 2nd floor close to the dive shop which made it convenient. We checked in late and the check in was efficient if not overly friendly. When we got to our room the light bulb in the room did not work but was replaced the next day. The room was large and comfortable, but as other readers have noted the walls are thin and we could hear the live music from the bar next door. The continental breakfast was just that. Juice, cereal, bagles, and muffins. They did have free popcorn later in the day. As a diver, it would have been nice to have had breakfast out a little earlier as we had to report to the dive shop at 7:30. Since they package with the dive shop it would seem they would be aware of this. The free internet service worked very well. This is not a luxury resort, but if I was diving in the area, I would probably consider it again due to its convenince and I my expectations would not be particularly high.

Room Tip: Don't get a room close to the restaurant/bar if you don't want to hear the music.

Marina del Mar is a welcome respite after unsuccessfully searching for rooms in Key Largo. We enjoyed our visit so much that we decided to stay a second night. With AAA discount, the rate was significantly lower than other accommodations. Highly recommend!

This hotel sits right on the marina waterfront. It was beautiful to walk along the docks and see all the huge and beautiful ships. Also, it was very convenient for water adventures. It had a large pool with lots of chairs available. It's a little hard to find, but in a nice location in Key Largo. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful.

The room was decent sized. There was also a bathtub, which we did not have in any other room in the Florida Keys. It was nicely decorated. However, the bed was very hard. It would greatly benefit from a pillow top or foam cover. Worse than that was the thinness of the walls. We had a hard time falling to sleep, as we could hear all the talking and crying from the small children next door. Also, in the middle of the night I was woken abruptly due to loud, horrible noises of two cats fighting on the docks - and we were on the fourth floor! We expected a little more for the price.

Room Tip: There are elevators but they are very, very slow. If stairs are an issue, I would recommend requesti...
