“Nice place for some time in the sun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2013

We stayed at the Marriott Key Largo Bay Beach Resort on our way down to Key West. We did not have a reservation, but saw their “rooms available” sign. Check in was friendly and there were great cookies and hot chocolate available…although the hot chocolate was empty when we checked in and when we stopped back it was made wrong and was light brown water…too bad it was fairly cold that night and it would have hit the spot. The room was a little more expensive than I would of expected, but that aside, the grounds were well kept and our room was nice.

We had a third floor bay view room. (See pictures) We had a nice balcony with a view of the bay and the small marina below. There were two queen beds, a mini bar, flat screen TV, coffee pot with coffee and filters, safe, hair dryer, etc. Everything you would expect from a higher end hotel. Our only complaint was our coffee pot did not work and when we called in the morning and complained, we asked that they bring us coffee…they charged us for room service!

They rooms are in a couple different buildings with parking near or under the building. They have a real nice pool area with a couple of levels…looks great lit up at nights. There is an artificial beach area with beach chairs and some shaded areas to sit. There is a tikki bar that is active at night and they have tables with built in fire places for cool evenings. There is also a restaurant onsite with a wall of windows overlooking the bay. We went to one of the many nearby places for dinner instead, but we ate breakfast here. Our room came with a free breakfast and it was really good. I had the buffet and there was everything from waffles to omelets, great bacon and the rest of the typical breakfast fare. I did look at the prices and I thought they were quite high.

I wish we would have had some time to spend in the sun but we wanted to get to Key West. If you are not going to spend time during the day around the pool or beach…there are better options for an overnight stay.

We chose this hotel over a few others because they have a restaurant (which is handy for a late-night snack or room service) and was a decent value over spring break. And overall, we found it to be a pleasant stay. It actually has a small beach (rare for the keys) with a nice pool area, lounge chairs and hammocks. There are ping pong tables, foosball, sand volleyball, shuffleboard, and a fitness room for entertainment for the family. You can rent kayaks or jet skis right on property, as well as hire a diving or snorkeling tour where the boat leaves right from the dock on property. (The tours are a bit more than the John Pennekamp State Park right up the road however...you pay for the convenience.) The rooms have also been recently renovated and are clean. But just don't expect much customer service. You won't get help with your bags, or much explanation when you check in. The pool ran out of towels at 1pm with no desire to get more. You may or may not have your coffee replenished with the maid service. But if you aren't picky about this level of service, this hotel is an acceptable family vacation.

We stayed here one night on our way to Key West for the remainder of our trip. I used my Marriott points for the night and was more than satisfied with the quality of room and service we received during our overnight stay. Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff and given our thank you package with various edible delights. Our check-in was quite easy and I was given a very nice overview of the property and its amenities with precise instructions on how to get to our room and where we could park. I was immediately approached by the bellman who offered to carry our baggage to our room. Our room turned out to be a corner room on the 3rd floor, our wrap-around balcony provided a nice view of the bay and the property. The room had a king bed and was exceptionally clean and quite comfortable.

Instead of the main restaurant, Gus' Grille, we opted for a light dinner at Breezer's Bar and Grille. Their menu included items you could get at Gus' Grille but in a more relaxed atmosphere, an open-air establishment that helps you get into that vacation mode real quick. Our bartenders were quite friendly and personable, attending to our every need. The drinks I ordered were quite exceptional and generously spirited.

The property has that "resort" feel to it and from what I could see from my balcony, quite family oriented. The grounds are meticulously manicured down to the raked sand.

The beach is man-made and there was sea grass in some areas but the kids didn't seem fazed at all by any of that. The pool is of reasonable size and great for a quick dip to cool down.

Highly recommended and we would definitely choose this property for a more extended stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a 3rd Floor room for a great view of the property and bay.

We stayed two nights because we were doing the swim with dolphins nearby. Property was excellent top to bottom. Very comfy, clean rooms and bathrooms. Rooms are well appointed w/ a beachy resort feel, if a bit small, and bathroom a bit dated-my only cons. Big balconies, Great views of the bay, and property. Rooms on the 3rd and 4th (top) floors provide much better views. The property itself is very nice, aesthetically appealing and true Florida Keys resort feel. Staff were all friendly and helpful. I have high expectations when traveling, especially with my family, and this place hit a home run with all of us!

On site restaurant (Gus' Grille) was outstanding, but, news flash, it's pricey (like most hotels). We did room service...lobster bisque, wings, burger, and some amazing "banana xango" desert! Took some time to get to the room but was hot and tasty on arrival. Breakfast buffet was excellent, if a bit pricey ($18), but at least that includes unlimited beverages-juice, milk, soda etc. Cook to order eggs, lots of fresh fruit (including blueberries, uncommon). Due to a reservation mix-up, they generously comped my family of four breakfast for two days (plus 4 drinks at their bars)! I'm a huge breakfast fan while vacationing, and Gus' nailed it for me. (The other menu items I saw at other tables looked great as well).

Be aware this is the Florida Keys - "beaches" as you might think are mostly non-existent, unless man-made. They did a nice job here creating one, as other places in the Keys do. Yes, there's sea-grass on the beach, and the bottom is a bit rocky or grass covered. That's how it is in the Keys for the most part.

The pool is well designed and fun for kids with fountains and much eye appeal. There is a dive shop on site with friendly and seemingly knowledgeable staff. You can rent snorkel gear, kayaks, arrange dive trips etc. "Pirate Island Divers" is a plus and adds to the "resort" feel.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Get a room on floor 3 or 4 for best views! Worth paying for "bay-front" room.

We stayed at the Marriott Key Largo on our way down to Key West. As one drives off onto the property, it seems as if you have entered an island resort. The check in was easy and friendly (and they gave a thank you package for being a rewards member). We had a double queen room with a balcony - from which we could see the water. The pool area is wonderful and also has a private beach. It is a place to really unwind, relax, and de-stress. There are many amenities to to make use of - restaurants, a dive shop, spa, and fitness centers. It is a perfect place to stay in the Keys.

Beautiful spot. This hotel was great except for a few things. They NEED more employees. They had one person serving all the people out by the beach and pool. ONE... They had one
bartender at the outside bar as well. The elevators are all the way on one side of the hotel so ask where your room is upon arriving, OR you will get stuck lugging all your stuff up 4 flights of stairs. Bathroom was dated. The chef and Manager at the restaurant were fabulous, but our waiter was annoyed by our presence. Chef cooked our catch perfectly! The drinks were watered down the whole time and we were served a lot of juice with no booze. Very pricey juice I guess. Bring your own and keep in your room if you want to drink. If you drink, drink wine...I would go back if they changed those things.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for two things, a view and a nearby room to a elevator!!!!

Key Largo was fun not not one of our top 5 warm vacations. I would recommend a short stay of 3 days and consider one day in Key West and 2 in Miami. The pool was very nice and the hotel service was good. The food at the pool was also good. The beach was ok. It did have volleyball, shade and hammocks with was nice but it was average for swimming as it had a lot of grass like the rest of the keys.

Below are some of the other things we did while in key largo.

http://www.everglades.com/ Gator park. 45 minutes from hotel. Good pictures with gators and snakes.
http://www.robertishere.com/ Really cool fruit stand stopped on way to Gator Park.
http://www.ballyhoosrestaurant.com/ Stone Crabs were average and not all you can eat as advertised but the rest of the food was really good.
http://www.dolphinscove.com/ Good expirience but make sure your kids are not scared of large animals.
http://www.lyinhawaiian.com/ Strongly recommend. Capt Tony is good with kids.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-fish-house-encore-key-largo Grilled fish was great. Sushi was average. Service was average.
http://www.senorfrijolesrestaurant.com/ Great view on the water. Decent Mexican. Choose this over the higher rated mexican food based on the view. Near where you can feed the tarpons for $3.
