“Nice Rooms, Older Property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

I stayed here for 4 nights for a sales conference. I am a Marriott general member.

Location: The hotel is right off Hwy 1 in Key Largo. Being in the Florida Keys, it's away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The hotel is situated between the highway and the water. There are a few restaurants and bars located within walking distance of the hotel.

Check-In: A bunch of us arrived around 6pm on a Saturday night, so it took some time to get checked-in, but that was expected. The staff was friendly and everything about the property was explained in detail.

Property/Room: I ended up with a standard double room on the top floor. The door faces an open area, too small to be a courtyard, but annoying enough because you can hear anyone talking outside from any of the floors. One night there were a bunch of kids who were running around screaming until 1am. Aside from that issue, the room itself was pretty nice. It felt very comfortable. The furnishings were good and the bed was excellent. The best part about the room was the balcony with the partial view of the ocean. It was nice to just sit out there and enjoy the breeze.

The property is pretty big, with a small private beach, sand volleyball court, pool, bar, and restaurants. The design of the hotel looks old (70's or 80's?), but they managed to make the most of it.

Amenities: Aside from the small private beach and pool, the resort also has a gym, spa, and access to rentals for watersports. There is also a gift shop that sells a lot of souvenirs, but I thought it was a bit too expensive. I ended up buying things from Miami airport on my way home.

Service: The staff was friendly and I had no issues during my stay. Housekeeping did a good job.

Overall it was a good experience. If you can get past the appearance of the property, you will be ok.

We (a family of 5 from the UK) stayed here for 4 nights in 2 'standard' adjacent rooms in early January booked through the Marriott website for a special rate of around $185+tax per room per night. Upon arrival, the hotel wasn't too impressive - it certainly didn't feel like a fairly expensive Marriott property. However, the longer we stayed, the more we warmed to the hotel for the following reasons: 1) child friendly, 2) very friendly staff, 3) great value breakfast - a full buffet for the kids was just $5.95+ tax per child and around $16 for adults, 4) great pool, 5) free wifi and plenty of free parking, 6) great value happy hour food and drink deals every evening. True, the beach is small and the pool gets busy but we never struggled to bag sun loungers. I did initially wish that we had booked more expensive 'bay view' rooms but, in the event, the standard rooms were fine and significantly cheaper - we were on the top floor, road noise was not a problem and many of the 'bay view' rooms only seemed to have a limited bay view. We also considered a 2 bed family suite but these were very expensive and around 50% more expensive than booking 2 separate rooms. If you are after high end luxury, this hotel probably isn't for you - otherwise, i am happy to recommend it and we certainly enjoyed our stay.

Read the reviews and under circumstances, stayed and enjoyed the property. elite member benefit snack package! Front desk was great, room was renovated. Property exterior seems dated if you can get past that. Pool, beach, and sunset were amazing. On-propoerty kayak, ski-doo rentals is a nice touch, we did kayak. Did not try Gus Grill based on reviews but did have pool foods and was suffice. pool service staff was great. It is pricey and would debate trying somewhere else but there isnt much. Nice experience.

Room Tip: pool/water view, high floor.

I have been a Marriott rewards member since the early 80's and have always felt the chain treated its frequent guests well. When we were first assigned a room, I was disappointed and let the front desk and the manager know. I had reserved a king size bed and was told none were available. I was not happy but since it is a nice property we decided to stay anyway. About 30 minutes later I got a call that they had found a room. It was a very special room and much more than I expected. Again Marriott and local management has gone the extra mile for a frequent guest.

Drove in from W Palm Beach Fl in 1 hr and 45 min. Hotel is is centrally located to everything and only 20 min. To Islamorada. Hotel is getting worn BUT is neat and clean. Our standard room was plenty for us with no balcony and Rt. 1 view. The amenities are many and you will think that you are at a Carribean island. Beautiful pool, bay beach, and spectacular views of the bay. We ate at all of the restaurants on the premises and all food is very good at all the restaurants. Happy hour and reduced prices on apps every night from 4pm - 7 pm and music Wed and Sat at bar and grill.great place for R & R.

Room Tip: Bay view rooms have a fabulous view from their balconies. Choose 2nd floor or higher due to palm tr...

We have stayed at Marriott properties for 10 years. This is hands down the worst. Without major renovations we would never stay here again or recommend to others. It is simply not worth the value. Drive 25 miles down the road and stay in a boutique hotel....or on in to Key West.

PROS....Eric at the front desk is tremendous. Housekeeping is friendly. Water activites on site and the folks in the dive shop are nice.

CONS.....There are too many to list but in summary: Hotel is in terrible need of a remodel. Couldn't take a shower without water pouring out of the tub. Bathroom in general is old and dingy with nasty, stained tile. Bathrooms are just gross. Beds are either old or not Marriott....not sure either way...but the bed is terribly uncomfortable. Unless you are on the 4th floor DO NOT reserve an "Island View" as it does not exist. Additionally, the "Island View" comes with a wake-up call from the property maintenace as they gather early every morning for coffee just below the first floor balconies. The food is mediocre at best and the service is slooooowww. I would not recommend eating on the property. There really is no beach. The pool is small and crowded. In general, it's just old and needs a ton of work. We were very, very disappointed.

We loved this hotel. We had a top floor room looking out over the back with a nice view. The room was huge and clean, our bathroom was clean and we got extra towels without fuss. The King bed was good but really high, I needed a step stool to get in. The front desk person was fine, Silver member and got a little gift bag.
Gus grill was good for breakfast but too expensive for the mediocre dinner. Pool was warm but crowded, the small hot tub was full all the time. We will come back but not eat at the hotel. Lots of quiet places to read and relax.
Cheap plastic furniture on our balcony was silly, really for this cost Marriot should get new outside furniture. Also need more beach chairs in all areas. The towel card thing is also silly given the cost of the hotel.
