We got this hotel on a priceline bid of $90, only a savings of $29 as the rack rate was $119. We were looking for a base to spend a night before going on a snorkeling trip. We were a little cautious about staying here based on the mixed reviews. I'm not sold on all the so-called great reviews recently making the place sound like the Four Seasons. Some looked scripted to hype the place. I'm somewhat in the middle. Here are my opinions:
The Good:
-The grounds are beautiful, the best feature of this hotel. Very pretty walking trail around the back of the complex.
-Very nice entrance off US 1 and lobby area.
-The beach is a good selling point and setting. Yes, it wouldn't hurt if they tried to update the sand quality.
-The pier is also a nice feature, used by the Caribbean Water Sports.
-Kids have to like this place with the pools and beach area.
-For the most part, the customer service was solid, including the front desk at check-in. They also took care of printing my boarding pass and dropped it off at our room (no business center). I paid close attention to the service as it has been brought up several times by others. We got a hello from most employees walking around this place. My favorite was Barb in the Gift Shop. She was most helpful and friendly. She went out her way to call the Key Largo Coffee House for their hours. We did see Chris out at the beach bar who was mentioned before. I will say he didn't seem very enthusiastic. Only needed him for the free Key Lime Coolers (non-alcoholic). I did get a laugh out of him when I said "you must be sick of making these things". He then showed me the stack of cards issued at check-in for these drinks.
The Average:
-Our room, which was the Key Room, was average for a place that bills itself as a "resort". I got the hint at check in that priceline winners get their choice of parking lot views. The hotel structure to us looked more like a fancy motel setup. The room itself was clean, decent size, but did smell somewhat musty upon entering. The furniture in the sitting room could use some updating. There were 2 TV's, one in the bedroom and one in the sitting room. Nothing fancy about the bathroom, but again it was clean. We had no problem sleeping on the bed and found it comfortable. The pull-out sofa was not used.
-The pool and beach are at polar opposites of the resort, although I realize the KL Grande has no control over that. We were on the beach end so we had to track all the way across the parking lot to the other side, and the pool does sit next to the highway. The landscaping is pretty around the pool and helps prevent seeing US 1. The waterfalls help to drown out the noise.
The Not-So-Good:
-Now to the resort fee ($20 after taxes). I don't mind paying as long as I'm getting something in return. To include run-down tennis courts and a crooked basketball backboard as selling points to this fee is absurd. Adding swimming noodles to the list didn't help. Not sure if they include parking or wireless internet use, but we were not charged with either.
-Caribbean Water Sports is based out of this hotel. We found the guy running their hut to be totally uninterested. Maybe we caught him on a bad day, but it was a turn off, although they offer a bunch of activities. They have their own web site. One can do a Google search.
Can't comment:
-We did not use any of the restaurants or bars based on all the negative reviews. We recommend the Key Largo Coffee House (featured on the Food Network) . They now have a full dinner menu.
Bottom Line:
As stated in my review title, we had an OK stay. In all fairness, we were coming from the Westin Diplomat Resort in Hollywood Beach, and that's a tough act to follow. The Key Largo Grande has a lot of potential, it's just going to take a commitment from the new ownership. This can be a fabulous spot to vacation. We'll see what happens in the upcoming years.
