By all means, this is the worst facility I have ever swam at. I am an adult that swam here nearly every single day for the 3 months that I lived in Key Largo. I mostly swim laps for fitness and work. It's not the facility, because by all means it is quite nice, but the staff. The life guards here are the worst that I have ever dealt with.
First off, they always shut down the entrance an HOUR before close. And if you get there right at the hour, they make VERY sure to let you know that they are closing soon. They are extremely rude about it. While you swim, they vehemently let you know that they are closing in a half hour, fifteen minutes, ten minutes, and five minutes. They make sure that you get out BEFORE they close because GOD FORBID they do not leave before 6pm (now 7pm). I have never been able to swim until close. I once arrived a little less than an hour before close, but was told I could not swim because they had already closed down the pool since no one else was there. I'm sorry but for the amount that you have to pay to swim, the least they can do is be OPEN for the hours they are supposed to be.
Also, the life guards are the worse I've ever had to deal with. When in the lap lanes, they just turn a blind eye to children playing when there is a rec pool and kids pool to goof around in. Several time I have been swimming laps when all of a sudden a small child swims across my lane while the friend chasing them equally cuts me off. Never once did a life guard tell them anything. It happened on several occasions that I had to ask the children to a tleast stay out of my lane.
These life guards are also terrible at communicating. They will just blow their whistle...and nothing. They won't say, "Please don't do this, etc." And when they do communicate, it is the most rude language I have ever heard. I once dove into the dive well from the side - not horse playing around, but legitimately working on how to dive with a friend - and was told, "Do you not know how to read? There is a no diving sign." I was so taken about by this middle aged woman's statement. No, I did not see the faded sign. Because why would there be a no diving sign at a dive well?
The older life guards are the worst, though. There is one particular older gentleman with the nastiest attitude towards everything. It is pretty clear that the swimmers are nothing more than a burden to him. The teenagers that work there are no better because they just mimic the older ones. They just sit back in the chairs and let the place run amuck, only to blow their whistle when kids run. But thirty minutes before close, you bet they already have the pool vacuum out and are closing off the rec pool.
I think the part that killed me the most was WHO the life guards decided to "reprimand". If families and children were acting crazy, the guards wouldn't even bat an eye at them. If you were an individual swimming by yourself, though, look out. It was very backwards in that the people who were respectful swimmers were the ones that would get the nasty remarks when a rule was innocently broken. I don't know if it's because they didn't want to face the wrath of moms who kids are being bad or what, but it always blew me away at what they would let people get away with.
I must say, though, that there are only one or two life guards that have SOME customer service skills. Mr. John is the nicest person there. He does his job with a smile and is willing to help when you have questions about ANYTHING. He's ready to leave before close, too, but at least he isn't a jerk about it.
Overall, I loved swimming at this pool but hated the experience every single time. Even fellow swimmers that worked as life guards could not believe how classless this staff was. As a life guard, my fellow swimmers talked about how they would constantly stay past close to let people finish up their workouts, etc. Even the locker room/showers are locked before they close. So if you aren't done swimming extremely early, you cannot shower before you leave. This entire establishment needs a serious lesson on customer service. I have never been spoken to in such rude, irrational ways by "adults". I would not suggest swimming here just because they do not deserve the service of responsible, respectful swimmers.
