“A must see!!!”

Fort Clinch State Park

Jun 17, 2008

we visited Fort Clinch last week and it should definitely be on your list of things to see in Amelia Island. It costs $5 to get into the park and then just $2 for the Fort. After we visited the fort we went to the beach and picked up shells. It was very hot the day we were there so we plan on going back at a cooler time of year.

If you are in the area this is a must-see. Plenty to do- camping, biking, hiking, running, fishing, swimming, etc. The fort is fabulous and well-preserved and kept up. The re-enactors are knowledgeable and make the experience.

I spent a weekend here with my 7 year old son earlier this year & we had a blast. We camped - in tents - and the campsite was very much what you would expect from a Florida State Park. I've always been happy with the accommodations provided. Anyway - my main reason for writing this review is because I wanted to let people know that the fort is really neat. It's a very well preserved fort b/c no battles ever took place there. But we were able to walk through the rooms - up little stairways to the lookouts - there were multiple routes up and down the structure of the fort. I particularly liked that the structure seemed to be as it was when it was built. (I'm sure that they renovate it - but they do it authentically) I found that at the Castillo de San Marcos - the fort in St. Augustine - wasn't as interesting b/c the ground was all cemented over - like sidewalks - and there were so many places that you could not go. It was great to explore a fort in a more natural state.

If you go to Ameilia Island you must save a day for Fort Clinch. This is part of a state park. It costs $5 to get in. People camp, bike, hike, look for seashells, and fish. Bring your suite, chairs, umbrella, money, and food. We did not bring lunch and wish we had. There are vending machines and showers. We were able to buy junk food at the Fort Clinch Visitors Center for lunch to get us by.

There is also a very long pier that people visit and fish from. We found a small crab among the rocks near the pier.

Tips:
A learning to pass along. The first weekend of each month there is a re-enactment of the period when the fort was built. I heard it is amazing to see it. The fort is in excellent condition since the war ended before it saw battle. There is a person available to answer questions.

I suggest going when it is not in the heat of the summer. We arrived early in the morning late August. By 11:00 it was unbearably hot (90 degrees). The shade and water are the most attractive options by lunch. There were lots of bike riders at 9:00 am. This would be a great place to stay all day in April/May, maybe June.

There are campsites and showers. Lots of people were camping. Showers and rest rooms were nice.

Shelling:
There are sea shells to look for. There were no shark teeth we to be found. Another visitor said they were prevalent after the river was dredged and the dredged material was dumped on the beach. There are layers of shells if you dig on the beach. If there is ever another storm in the area, this is the place to be the year after as they will probably have to dredge again.
